Electronic Devices Tutorial - 1

This document contains 5 solutions to problems involving electronic devices and material properties: 1) calculating packing density of a bcc lattice, 2) calculating lattice constant and atomic density from given values, 3) finding Miller indices of planes, 4) determining Miller indices from reflection angle and lattice constant, 5) calculating density of Ge from its diamond lattice structure and constants.

Tutorial -1
Solution -1
• Assuming the atoms to be perfect hard spheres,
calculate the packing density of a bcc lattice
Solution -2
• If the atomic density of a bcc unit cell with a monoatomic basis is
1.6 × 1022 𝑐𝑚−3 , calculate the lattice constant. What is the atomic
density per unit area on the (110) plane? What is the radius of the
atom?
Solution -3
• Find the miller indices of the following planes
Solution – 4
• A sample of Cr is analyzed by x-ray diffraction using Cu 𝐾𝛼 -
radiation, for which 𝜆𝐾𝛼 = 1.5418 Å. Determine the miller indices of
the plane from which the angle of reflection, 𝜃, is 31.4°. The lattice
constant of Cr is 2.96Å.
Solution – 5
• Given that Ge arranges itself in a “diamond” lattice, with a lattice
constant of 5.46Å calculate its density. Given at.wt of Ge = 72.64
a.u.
