Storage Manager To CommVault Cheat Sheet

This document provides a summary comparing key objects and concepts between Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) and CommVault Simpana. It outlines how TSM configuration objects, storage components, scheduling, and retention policies relate to similar CommVault concepts. For example, it notes that a TSM client option set maps to a CommVault subclient policy, TSM management classes relate to CommVault storage policies, and TSM copy groups are incorporated into CommVault's storage policies.

Tivoli Storage Manager to CommVault Cheat Sheet

Summary
This document is to give you a quick reference and relationship of Tivoli Storage Manager objects to CommVault Simpana objects.

Function Comparison
Configuration
Tivoli Storage CommVault Comments
Manager (TSM) Simpana
Client Option Set Subclient Policy Configure filters, content, and what storage policy to use for a group of clients.
Management Class Storage Policy This is a classification for particular sets of objects from Copy groups to help define retention. CommVault
maintains this in a Storage Policy
Policy Domain N/A This is a container for policy and scheduling info, CommVault does not utilize this.
Policy Set N/A This is a set of management classes within a POLICY DOMAIN, CommVault does not utilize this.
Copy Group Storage Policy This is the structure which defines retention of backup data. CommVault incorporates this into the
(Backup) Storage Policy.
Copy Group Storage Policy This is the structure which defines retention of archive data. CommVault incorporates this into the
(Archive) Storage Policy, as from a CommVault perspective Archive is Hierarchical Storage Management (HSM).

Storage and Media

Tivoli Storage CommVault Simpana Comments
Manager (TSM)
Device Class Library and Drive In CommVault the Library and Drive Configuration allows you to setup all forms of storage target be
Configuration it disk, tape, VTL, or cloud.
Library Library and Drive In CommVault the Library and Drive Configuration allows you to setup all forms of storage target be
Configuration it disk, tape, VTL, or cloud.
Drive Library and Drive In CommVault the Library and Drive Configuration allows you to setup all forms of storage target be
Configuration it disk, tape, VTL, or cloud.
Storage Pool (Backup) Library and Drive In CommVault the Library and Drive Configuration allows you to setup all forms of storage target be
Configuration it disk, tape, VTL, or cloud.
Storage Pool (Archive) Library and Drive For CommVault Archive is similar to Tivoli Storage Manager Hierarchical Storage Management
Configuration/Storage (HSM). To use CommVault like TSM Archive you could use an Auxiliary Copy in a Storage Policy or
Policy separate BackupSet or Subclients to assign data a longer retention.
Storage Pool (Disk) Library and Drive In CommVault the Library and Drive Configuration allows you to setup all forms of storage target be
Configuration it disk, tape, VTL, or cloud.
Storage Pool (Active) Library and Drive To use CommVault like TSM Active Pool you could use an Auxiliary Copy in a Storage Policy to move
Configuration/Storage data to another tier or adjust retention. CommVault also has the ability to separate full and
Policy incremental.
Storage Pool (Copy) Library and Drive To use CommVault like TSM Copy Pool you could use an Auxiliary Copy in a Storage Policy to move
Configuration/Storage data to another tier or site.
Policy
Server/Data Media Agent CommVault segregates the data mover from the data manager and scheduler via the use of Media
Mover/Library Agent. This differs from TSM were all three are one a single server only, except for the use of LAN
Manager Free. CommVault utilizes a Proxy server for LAN Free and all components could reside on a single
server is so desired.

Scheduling
Tivoli Storage Manager CommVault Comments
(TSM) Simpana
Client Schedule Schedule Policy In CommVault a Schedule Policy can be segregated for a specific job or agent type.
Administrative Schedule Scheduler In CommVault Administrative jobs can be scheduled directly when they are run and then viewed
via the Scheduler.

Monitoring

Monitoring
Tivoli Storage Manager CommVault Comments

Activity Log Event Viewer CommVault uses the Event Viewer to monitor CommCell activity that can be reported and alerted
on inside CommVault.
Sessions Job Controller CommVault uses the Job Controller to monitor job activity that can be reported and alerted on
inside CommVault.
Events Scheduler In the CommVault Scheduler you can view scheduled jobs a month at a time.

Client Side
Tivoli Storage Manager CommVault Simpana Comments
(TSM)
Client Instance BackupSet/Instance CommVault uses backupset to contain data and is inclusive of all of the subclients inside of it. If
another BackupSet is create then that creates another copy of the data. CommVault also has the
ability to have multiple instances of it's software running just like TSM, with separate retention,
logs, and so on.
Include/Exclude Subclient/Filters In CommVault the Subclient object can be used to segment data or associate with separate
retention or reporting. SubClients are inclusive of the data, meaning that data can only reside in
one subclient. The Filter tab in the Subclient is used to exclude data or apply exclusions to a filter.

Retention Comparison
Tivoli Storage Manager CommVault Simpana Comments
(TSM)
Copy group name Storage Policy This is the name that describes the retention requirements
Copy type Storage Policy This is the type of data that is being retained; backup or archive
Copy frequency Storage Policy This is the minimum number of days that must elapse between successive incremental backups.
CommVault performs this through the days and cycles options in the storage policy.
Versions data exists Storage Policy/Subclient This attribute specifies the maximum number of different backup versions retained for files and
Properties directories that exist on the client. This is done differently in CommVault and is achieved through
the use of days and cycles option in the Storage Policy and/or the "Versions" option on each
subclient on the Retention Tab.
Versions data deleted Storage Policy/Subclient This attribute specifies the maximum number of different backup versions retained for files and
Properties directories that no longer exist on the client. This is done differently in CommVault and is
achieved through the use of days and cycles option in the Storage Policy and/or the "Versions"
option on each subclient on the Retention Tab.
Retain extra versions Storage Policy/Subclient This attribute specifies how many days all but the most recent backup version is retained. This is
Properties done differently in CommVault and is achieved through the use of days and cycles option in the
Storage Policy and/or the "Versions" option on each subclient on the Retention Tab.
Retain only version Storage Policy/Subclient This attribute specifies the number of days the last remaining inactive version of a file or
Properties directory is retained. This is done differently in CommVault and is achieved through the use of
days and cycles option in the Storage Policy and/or the "For Items Deleted by User "option on
each subclient on the Retention Tab.
Copy serialization Subclient Properties This attribute determines whether a file can be in use during a backup or archive, and what to do
if it is. CommVault subclient properties define what to do if an object is opened.
Copy mode Schedule Policy This attribute determines whether a file or directory is considered for incremental backup
regardless of whether it changed or not since the last backup. CommVault does this through the
schedule policy tasks under the backup type.
Copy destination Storage Policy This is the destination where backups or archives are stored. CommVault relates this option in
the Storage Policy.
Retain versions Storage Policy This specifies the number of days an archived file remains in storage. CommVault relates this
option in the Storage Policy under the Archive Data Retention.
