The Keyboard
The keyboard

The keyboard is an input device used to type


letters, numbers or symbols. It is made up of
many keys (about 101 to 104 keys). These keys
are grouped together according to their work.
The 4 parts of the keyboard
Function keys

Alphanumeric keys Cursor keys Numeric


keypad
Function Keys
The Function keys are ESC, F1 to F12, Print
Screen, Scroll Lock and Pause/Break. Each has
a special job to do each time we use a
program.
Alphanumeric Keys
The Alphanumeric keys make up the biggest part
of the keyboard. They are called alphanumeric
because they have ALPHAbets and NUMbers.
This part allows you to use letters, numbers and
punctuation marks.
Cursor Keys
The Cursor keys are found
between the alphanumeric
keys and the numeric keys.
These keys control the
movement of the blinking
object seen on the monitor
screen known as a cursor. You
can use the up, down, left and
right arrows to move the
cursor.
Numeric Keys
These keys are found at the right side of the
keyboard. The are called numeric because they
have NUMbers as seen in a calculator.
Functions of the other keyboard parts
Caps lock key – when press this key, all the
letters that you type will be in capital letters.

CTRL and ALT
These keys are called combination keys because
they only work together with other keys.

CTRL + S -> Save


Shift Key
This key is used to capitalize a letter you want to
change. To do this, press the letter you want
while holding down the Shift key.
Escape Key
This key is used to exit programs quickly.
Enter Key
Pressing this key allows the computer to do the
command you have given.
Backspace key
This key will erase any characters on the left side
of the cursor.
Status Light
These are the lights found on the upper right
part of the keyboard. Each light has a name from
a particular key. If the lights are on, it means the
key is activated.
