information has been consolidated in the works of Durand
(1951, 1953a, 1953b), Durand and Condolols (1952), Newitt
et. al. (1955), Zandl and Govatos (1967), Zand! (1971),
Shook (1976), Wasp et. al. (1977) and Turian and Yuan
(1977). In spite of the extensive literature on
pressure-drop and deposit-velocity correlations for the flow
of slurries through straight pipelines, there is practically
no information on the resistance of bends, fittings, and
valves to slurry flow. Since pipeline Installations usually
contain a considerable number of bends, fittings, and
valves, a knowledge of their resistances to the flow is
needed for proper design.

slurry temperature with cool tap water. The flanged bottom
outlet of the feed tank was connected to a 3-in gate valve,
followed by a 3-in flanged tee leading to the pump inlet.
The tee was oriented so that the fluid made a 90°turn going
into the pump inlet. The opening of the tee opposite the
pump inlet was sealed with a blind flange, which was drilled
and tapped to accept a 3/4-ln pipe used for draining the
system. The weigh tank, having a diameter and height of
2-1/2 ft, had a 3-ln butterfly valve connected to its bottom
outlet. It was equipped with a 1/8-hp Llghtnln mixer and
was placed on a Fischer Scientific Platform Balance Model
No.802 with 1000-lb capacity, and the entire assembly was
mounted on a 7-ft high platform which was high enough so
that the outlet pipe from the weigh tank was approximately
4 in above the feed tank.

variable-speed dc motor with stepless speed control and
tachometer-feedback speed control, made by Reliance Electric
Co. The motor came with a solid-state control panel which
was used to provide the rectified power to the motor and
also the electronic controls for varying the motor speed.
The pump and motor were mounted on a steel base (see Figure
3.2). In order to lubricate the packing of the pump thrust
bearing, we used a 2-oz spring-loaded grease cup filled with
waterproof lubricant. A little water was allowed to flow
through the bearing to prevent the grease from flowing into
the circuit. This system was preferred to lubrication with
water, because it avoided the flow of an unknown amount of
water into the test loop.

The orientation of these flow loops is shown in Figure 3.1.
The entire flow-loop system was supported independently from
the pump-motor assembly on a frame constructed from slotted
angle iron. A 4-ft length of 2-ln flexible rubber hose
connected the pump discharge to the inlet of a short section
of a 2-in PVC straight pipe. A metal-case thermometer
(Fischer Scientific Model No. 15-080A, range: 30-240 ^ ) and
a bourdon-tube pressure gage (Weksler Model No. EA14, range:
0-lOp psl) were mounted on this pipe. The outlet of this
pipe was connected to the five flow loops using one cross
and two tees. Five control valves were installed to direct
the flow into each flow loop (see Figures 3.3 through 3.7).
The return ends of all flow loops (except the 1-in
galvanlzed-steel flow loop) led to a short section of a 2-ln
PVC straight pipe, which was connected by means of a rubber
hose to a pipe leading to the magnetic flowmeter. This type
of arrangement was planned in order to minimize the
transmission of vibrations from the pump to the pipe test
section. The flowmeter was mounted so that the flow In It
was in a vertical direction, with a 3-ft length of vertical
pipe preceeding it to prevent excessive impingement of
solids on the inner wall of the flowmeter. The discharge
from the flowmeter led to a 2-in three-way valve, which
could be used to direct the flow back into the feed tank, or
into the weigh tank.
29
The nominal and actual diameters of the pipes used in
the construction of the five flow loops are given in Table
3.1. The longest continuous pieces of pipe used in the
cnstructlon were 20 ft for PVC flow loops and 21 ft for the
galvanlzed-steel flow loops. All pipe connections in the
loops were made using compression couplings, which were set
to give minimum pipe end-to-end separation. To operate each
flow loop Independently, gate valves were Installed at the
inlet and outlet of each flow loop.
these pipe loops are listed in Tables 3.2 and 3.3. These
were bought in the open market and tested Just as received.
As indicated in Figures 3.3 and 3.4, the various bends,
fittings, and valves were adequately separated by long
sections of straight pipe to provide enough entrance length
in order to secure fully developed flow before a test
section. The quantities R (radius of centerline of bend or
radius of curranture), R/D (the relative radius), and t
(axial length of center line of fitting) for these fittings
are shown in Tables 3.2 and 3.3.

Tables 4.1 through 4.8 all show that the loss coefficient
and the equivalent length are neither a function of particle
size nor of solid concentraction.
5.1 CONCLUSIONS
1. Analysis of particle suspensions flowing through
valves and fittings is more complex than that of
water, because additional variables are involved.

5.2 RECOMMENDATIONS
1. Experimental data for particles of diameter greater
than 100 microns are required and a new correlation
for the head losses through complex geometry needs to
be developed.
