Waking Life

“I want to be the ruler of my life not a slave,” stated in the dead poet society. Human
are a free being, choosing their own path. However, society’s norms hinders us in
become a person who we want to be. We are the sailor of our life, but to become a
captain we must learn to know how to sail, wherein we set our own standards for the
reason that we have our own odyssey and our own self problem. For us to go beyond
the norm, we must first encounter the death of our own material self. Waking thy life of
our being is something we must achieve to remove ourselves from the colony we are in.

We are a people with a divergent mindset not as a person converging ourselves to

become a person the society wants us to be. We, ourselves are not a part of the ant
colony that process on doing the same routine. Being different from the standard are not
a trouble but it is an issue. It isn’t a trouble because we are not the only one who wants
to escape the huge walls set by the norms. Life isn’t a competition with other people,
finding who are the best and life isn’t a game of survival which destroys the life of the
weakest but life is a search of our true self, leaving the materialistic or physical needs
for us to obtain a true living. Being odd is a society’s issue, not because it destroys the
harmonic system, but it destroys the sense of humanity and freedom. Once a person
diverse from the usual norms it thus results to isolation, in which this issue finds an
escape which is the death. In relation to this, the story of Kristel Tejada, a medical
student from U.P. who unfortunately end her life because she couldn’t pay her tuition
fee, wake the self being of each students that education is not a privilege but it is a right
of a person. In this, we have a right to stand on our own opinion, we are not a kind of
people who needed to dress up accordingly to the society idea of clothing. We have our
own view of the world, we define our own self being, and also we have our own identity.
We all must break this boundary because we exist because we have our own self
essence and primarily we live to know our true self.
We must trust our own believes even though they are odd for the whole, a striking
quote on the movie. Being different isn’t wrong, we view our lives and perceive the
things different from others. We must go for a path that we think it is right for our self not
for others. It is true that we can deceive others, but from ourselves we can never
escape the reality that we are all different. We shouldn’t be afraid accepting that we an
odd thinkers and if that would happen we will live our lives from the fullest.
