ABSTRACT

Academic Stress can have both positive and negative consequences, if not
well managed. It is important that students should learn and acquire the necessary
knowledge and skills that will in turn make them stressful .students who do well in
the classroom show a positive self-evaluation of their academic success and failures
.These student are high on resilience and excel in academics despites stressful events
and condition. Resilience is a dynamic process involving an interaction between
both risk and protective processes, internal and external to the students that act to
modify the effects of an adverse life events. The term resilience. The capacity for
successful adaptation to the changing environment. Stress is a fact of everyday life,
we’ve all felt it. Sometimes it acts as a positive force and sometimes as a negative
force. If you experience stress over a prolonged period of time, it could become
chronic. In modern life stress is a common problem. The negative effects of stress
effect individuals’ health performance.
Chapter I
Introduction

We choose these particular topics to writes about our personal observations, difficulties,
issues, and other relevant experience of the students who are involved. We conduct this study to
lessen the depression and anxiety of a student’s who are involved in stress. Stress is one problem
of a student’s because they are depressed in requirements and performances that they encountered.
School is a competitive place where students have many duties and responsibilities. This requires
coping abilities to manage our stress. Everyone is exposed to stress and sometimes in their lives
they are uncomfortable in their situation because it affects their sense of well-being and equality
of life. According to cognitive-transactional model of stress, stresses the dynamic relationship
between an individual and the environment in which a stimulus. We focused on academic stress
and we are particularly interested in conducting research which is perceive stress. Stress is defined
as a state of mental tension and worry caused by problems in your life usually stress characterized
by increasing of our heart rate rise blood pressure and also depression. This problem of Senior
Students can have caused anxiety. Stress among students is very common problem being placed
nowadays. According to David Fontana, Stress is a demand upon the adaptive capacities of mind
and also body, these definition indicates that stress represents these conditions under which
individuals have demand made upon them.

This study aims to determine the relationship of stress in their academic performances
specifically, it aims to answer the following questions:
This study will provide a vital information in stress management. This study is helpful to benefit
the following:
Students: To be aware and inform on the perceived effect of stress to their academic performance?
6
Teachers: To be guided in order to manage and help each student to be cope up.
Parents: To help their children through encouraging them to stay positive in life.
Research Hypothesis
Ha: There are significant difference on the effects of stress in the academic performance?
Ho: There are no significant difference on the effects of stress in the academic performance?
Objectives:

●To identify the perceived effect of stress to the academic performance of students
This study will be focused on the perceived effects of stress among of Senior High School
Students of Tuao Vocational and Technical School Malummin Annex.
Definition of terms
Stress - A state of mental tension and worry caused by problems in your life
and work, etc.
-Something that causes strong feelings of worry.
Chapter II
8
Stress is a common and inevitable component in the lives of every individual, regardless of race or
cultural background (Newth, 2011). Over the past few decades, there has been significant investigation on
the issues of stress (Dziegielewsk, Turnage & RoestMarti, 2004). In addition, university students have
shown to possess a unique set of stressor which can affect their everyday experiences (Hall, 2005).
Stress arises when there is burden on the person which exceed is available assets. If stress is harsh and
extended, it can lessen academic performance, hinder with a student capability to involve in and to campus
life, and raise the probability to substances abuse and other potentially destructive behaviors (Richlin-
klonsky and Hoe, 2003).
Nathan (2002) also states that prolonged and severe stress may be psychologically damaging in that it
may hinder a person's ability to engage in effective behavior and instead the person might end up distancing
and worst case scenario-not engage or be present at all. Another of the effect of stress on the body was
presented by Lazarus and Folkman (1984), in that they state stress is more than a response to environmental
demands, but it also related to personal perception.
Researchers (Vermont & Steensman, 2005; Topper, 2007: Malach-Pines & Keinan, 2007) have
defined stress as the insight of incongruity between environment burden (stressors) and person's
ability to fulfill their demands. Researchers usually defined stress as the undesirable response
people have to extreme strain or other sort of burden placed on them. Stress occurs when a person
deals with a situation that they recognize as irresistible and cannot manage.
Gunnar (1998), defined the explanation of academic stress is the anxiety and stress that comes from
schooling and education. There is regularly a lot of compressions that comes along with following a degree
and one's education. There is studying homework, tests, labs, reading, and quizzes. There is the stress of
doing all of the work, balancing the time and finding time for extra-curricular activities. Academic stress is
particularly hard on school students who are often living away from home for the first time.
Students often push hard to study for test and complete assignments toward the end of the grading
period, only to find that when they relax in the break that follows, that become ill. The high school years
are stressful for they represent a period of change that requires teen-ager to adapt. Each person under stress
respond to stressor in an individual way. Some researchers studied the effect of life changes on high school
students and found that when students face more than one changed at a time, their grade point averages
dropped Sizer et.al (1997).
Academic stress is the product of a combination of academic related demands that exceed the adaptive
resources available to an individual. If a student is unable to cope effectively with academic stress, then
serious psycho-social-emotional consequences may result (Arthur, 1998; MarGeorge, Samter,&
Gillikan,2005).
Students who experience mental and physical health problem is then at greater risk for poor academic
performance, thus increasing academic stress and perpetuating a cycle of stress, mal adaptive coping, and
compromise health (Haines,Norris,& Kashy, 1996). Literature has shown that there is a strong relationship
Between stress and high school student’s performance (Ross, Neibling, Heckert, 1999).
9
Normally stress is caused by environmental and internal demands that need to be managed in order to
cope with the situation. This environmental and internal demands maybe unique to each individual. In many
case first year student experience home seeks. This occur as a result of moving into a new environment, not
knowing anyone, missing home, and missing family and friends. Home sickness can be debilitating students
making it difficult for them to study or cope effectively academic life (Fisher, 1994).
Research has shown that academic workload has been one of major sources of high school student’s
stress. Chiang (1995) proposed that school is one of the main sources of stress among adolescents. Such
stress come from too much homework, unsatisfactory academic performance preparation for test, lack of
interest in a particular subject, and teacher's punishment.
Normality students encounter high level of stress when they received lower grades. This is because some
students linked their grades with their future. Stress is marked by overly high performance standards, with
levels of worry, self-criticism of attention while preparing for or taking exams (Altmaire, 1983).
Indeed, students have a unique cluster of stressful experiences. Student’s academic performances can be
affected by many factors. Berstein et.al (2008) define the sources of stress as every circumstance or event
that threatens disrupt people's daily functioning and causes them to make adjustments.
Stress is considered to be a part of student’s life and can impact the students coping strategies in
accordance with the demand of academic life. This is so because academic work is always accomplished
with stressful activities (Agolla & Ongori, 2009).
Students reported their experience of high academic stress at predictable times in each semester which
result from preparing and taking exams, class ranking competitions, and mastering huge amount of syllabus
in a comparatively very small amount of time (Rawson, Bloomer, & Kendall, 1999).
Psychology the term stress is used to refer to both to certain heightened mental and physical states
and to the causes of such states. A person in a physically or mentally demanding or dangerous
situation is said to be under stress. Internal disorders such as acidosis, cirrhosis and, other
conditions can also procedure stress responses. Chronic repetition of certain emotions, such as
anger or despair, as well as changes in work or home situations or a reaction to surgery are just a
few of the further ways in which stress can occur.
Stress is normal part of life, and such produces of stress as physical exercise, various
emotional states, and creative activity are usually considered healthy. Prolonged and unwanted
stress, however, can have undesirable effects on mental and physical health, although reactions to
such pressure can vary greatly among individuals. A number of stress-related disorders are known,
even though the interactions of body and mind in the development of such disorders are not yet
fully understood.
Mental states such as serve me/alcoholic DPRESSION are closely linked with stress-related
including ANXIETY, and the complete syndrome known as POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS
DISORDER is produced by traumatic situations such as war and disaster. Physiological effects
linked with stress include ULCERS, high blood pressure (see hypertension), and HEART
DISEASE. Stress can also adversely affect the immune system, causing the body to be less
resistant to a wide range of other health problems.

Research Methodology
A. Research Design
The researchers will gather information about finding the perceive effect of stress in the
academic performance of Senior High School students through descriptive method which
11
questionnaire are provided for the respondents to fill out or answer. The respondents are expected
to give their answers correctly with no biases. The answers of respondents will remain as secret
for their safety.
This study was conducted in Tuao Vocational and Technical School Malummin Annex Senior
High School Students. The said study will be specified in finding the relationship between stresses
in academic performances to the cognitive learning process among Senior High School Students.
The needed respondents of the study are all the Senior High School Students.
The following activities were undertaken by the researchers in gathering the needed data for
the study. The researcher asked permission to the teacher in charge and subject teachers for the
approval in conducting the study.
Upon the approval, the researchers will give a letter to the class president of each section and
read it in class. After which, the researchers distributed the questionnaire to be answered by the
respondents.
After answering, the researchers collected the questionnaire for the tabulation and
interpretation of data.
