Our Implementation of Reverse Engineering
In attempting to improve and recreate the lantern that we were originally
given we have utilized many of the key principles of reverse engineering. First
off we disassembled the lantern examining its structure as we did so. When
we arrived at the electronics we deciphered what they were and tested them
against other possible designs that we speculated could be better. Based of
of our observations we decided on the flaws and what we can improve on.
The Original
In taking apart the lantern we came to the
conclusion that it is a generic battery powered
lantern with a small board of LEDS on it. The
Lantern is powered by 3 AA batteries that are
connected and wired to the lights. In the circuit
there is also a resistor to lower the voltage and a
switch to allow the operator to turn the lights on
and off. We also observed a plastic mirror that
reflects the light away from the lantern. The
whole thing works but the cheap plastic, lack
luster design and unappealing look could be
improved on.
Disassembly
Planned Improvements and Design
After observing the original we decided
on a few changes we feel ares essential
to the betterment of the lamp. First of
we think it could be possible to
waterproof the design. Second we think
that it's hideous and needs a cosmetic
upgrade. Finally we want to improve the
quality and durability of the lamp. We
decided on a coffin like street lamp
design that focuses on appearance
quality and durability while sacrificing the
water-resistant idea.
Final Product
Our final product although not
completely as planned surpassed our
expectations. It's not waterproof but
it's brighter, higher quality, and far
more visually pleasing than the
original lamp. Furthermore, by using
wood and thin sheets of acrylic, we
managed to keep the lamp
lightweight and portable.
