Getting Started with FIRST Robotics

Author
Steve Nixon

Project Description
Getting started as a FIRST rookie mentor or a FIRST rookie competitor is a huge challenge. The
volume of information combined with the variety of skills required makes for a nearly
impossible challenge for new mentors and new competitors. This website is designed to briefly
walk you through the basics of creating a minimally viable robot that can be driven and then
modified to fit your team’s needs.

This website will include information the following pages:

1. Home: This page will include pictures, videos and descriptions of FIRST Robotics.
2. Supplies: This page contains a description of the parts and tools supplied and needed to
complete the project as well as links to purchase anything your team needs.
3. Assembly: This contains a walkthrough of how to assemble the kit-of-parts robot that
comes with your teams supplies every year. Includes a quiz as a check for
understanding.
4. Wiring: This contains a walkthrough about how to install your physical control systems,
including RoboRio, wiring, motors and controllers. Includes a quiz as a check for
understanding.
5. Computer Setup: This contains a walkthrough about how to install your physical control
systems, including RoboRio, wiring, motors and controllers. Includes a quiz as a check
for understanding.
6. Coding: This contains a walkthrough to demonstrate the basic coding required to code
the robot to drive. Includes a quiz as a check for understanding.
7. Resources: A compendium of resources to allow users to go further with their robots
and where other support can be found.

Target Audience
This page is aimed at both mentors and students who are new to the FRC program and are
interested in learning more about the basic skills required to create a simple, minimally viable
robot that can run in competition mode. There is no assumption that the user has any
specialized electronics or computer skills. The user is assumed to have some minimal
computing skills. These include being able to install programs in Windows and
Learning Objectives:
Learners should be able to meet the following objectives upon completion of reading, viewing,
and interacting with the entire website:
1. Given an assembly walkthrough, users can assemble the basic kit-of-parts robot that all
teams receive.
2. Given a control systems walkthrough, users can successfully connect all the required
parts to the robot and the RoboRio computer.
3. Given a coding walkthrough, users can successfully create code and upload it to the
RoboRio computer.
4. Given a complete walkthrough, users can successfully run a minimally viable FRC robot.
