Anova

1) An ANOVA was performed to test if different batches of raw material affected chemical process yield. The ANOVA table shows batches as the source of variation with a degrees of freedom of 4 and an F value that needs to be calculated. The null hypothesis is that there is no significant difference in mean yields between batches. 2) An one-way ANOVA was set up to test if three treatment means were equal using data from a completely randomized design. 3) An ANOVA was performed at a 0.05 significance level to determine if drying times differed significantly between 4 brands of acrylic paint.

Tutorial Chapter 4 (ANOVA)

1) The following ANOVA is obtained from an experiment of a chemical process done on 5

batches of raw material. The objective was to test whether the different batches of raw
material has an effect on the yield produced by that chemical process.

Source of Sum of Degrees of

Variation Squares Freedom Mean Square F

Batches 72.60
Error 30
Total 194.64 34

a) Fill in the blanks of ANOVA table.

b) Write the hypothesis and determine whether there is a significant different between the
mean yield produced by the different batches of raw materials at a = 0.05 level of
significance.

2) The following data are from a completely randomized design.

Treatment

Method 1 Method 2 Method 3

15 10 18
20 15 19
19 11 23
14

Sample mean, x j x1 =17.0 x2 =12.0 x3 =20.0

At a = 0.05 level of significance, test whether the means for the three treatments are equal.
Set up the one-way ANOVA table for this problem.

3) Four different brands (A, B, C and D) of acrylic paint were being tested for their drying
time. The following data are the drying time (in minutes) for the different brands of acrylic
paint:
Machine
A B C D
17.5 16.4 20.3 14.6
16.9 19.2 15.7 16.7
15.8 17.7 17.8 20.8
18.6 15.4 18.9 18.9

Perform the ANOVA at 0.05 level of significance and indicate whether or not the mean drying
time for the acrylic paint differs significantly for the 4 brands.

4) The following data were obtained for a randomized block design involving five treatments
and three blocks: SST = 430, SSTR = 310, SSBL = 85 . Set up the ANOVA table and test for
any significant differences. Use a = 0.01 .

5) A laboratory technician measures the breaking strength of each of kinds of linen thread by
means of 4 different instruments and obtains the following results (in ounces). Looking upon
the threads as treatments and instruments as blocks, perform an ANOVA at the level of
significance 0.01.

I1 I2 I3 I4
Thread 1 20.6 20.7 20 21.4
Thread 2 24.7 26.5 27.1 24.3
Thread 3 25.2 23.4 21.6 23.9
Thread 4 24.5 21.5 23.6 25.2
Thread 5 19.3 21.5 22.2 20.6

6) Concern about the running temperature of a computer chip prompted the investigation of
cooling fans. Five different computers were available and each type of cooling fan was tried
in each computer. Given the observations on temperature, coded by subtracting the smallest
value as follows:

Blocks
1 2 3 4 5
Treatment 1 14 6 11 0 9
Treatment 2 14 10 16 9 16
Treatment 3 12 7 10 9 12
Treatment 4 12 9 11 6 7

Construct the ANOVA table and test for differences among the treatments using a = 0.05 .

7) Given the following summary of ANOVA table, fill in the missing items (indicated by
asterisks), identify the sets of null and alternative hypothesis to be examined and then use the
0.05 level in reaching a conclusion regarding each null hypothesis.

8) An amusement park studied methods for decreasing the waiting time (minutes) for rides by
loading and uploading riders more efficiently. Two alternative loading/ uploading methods
have been proposed. To account for potential differences due to the type of ride and the
possible interaction between the method of loading and uploading and the type of ride, a
factorial experiment was designed. Use the following data to test for any significant effect due
to the loading and uploading method, the type of ride, and interaction. Use a = 0.05 .
