ii) If the roots of 2x2 - 6x + k = 0 are real and equal, find k.
Ans The roots of the quadratic equation are real and equal.
∴ b2 - 4ac = 0
2
(- 6) - 4 × 2 × k = 0
- 8k = - 36
k= 9
Ans x2 + x − 20 = 0
x2 + x + − - 20 = 0

∴ x= 9−1
2
or x = −9−1
∴ x= 8
2
or x = −10
∴ x=4 or x = -5
∴ The roots of the given quadratic equation are 4 and -5.
ii) The roots of each of the following quadratic equations are real and equal, find k.
kx (x - 2) + 6 = 0
Ans kx (x - 2) + 6 = 0
∴ kx2 - 2kx + 6 ... (In the standard form)
Here, a = k, b = - 2k, c = 6
Δ = b
2 - 4ac
∴ 4k2 - 24k = 0
∴ 4k (k - 6) = 0
∴ 4k = 0 or k - 6 = 0 ∴ k = 0 or k = 6
k = 0 is unacceptable, because if k = 0, the equation becomes meaningless.
∴ k=6
Ans.: The value of k is 6.
4) Answer the following(Any One) 4
i) For doing some work, Pintu takes 6 days more than Nishu. If both work together, they complete the
work in 4 days. Find number of days required by each of them to do work alone.
x + 6
x
+ 1
x + 6
x
+ 1
=
x + 6
1
∴
x + 6 + x
x (x + 6)
= 1
∴
2x + 6
x2 + 6x
= 1
2
∴ x + 6x = 8x + 24
∴ x2 + 6x - 8x − 24 = 0
∴ x2 − 2x - 24 = 0
∴ x2 − 6x + 4x − 24 = 0
∴ x (x − 6) + 4 (x − 6) = 0
∴ (x − 6) (x + 4) = 0
∴ x - 6 = 0 or x + 4 = 0
∴ x=6 or x = − 4
∴ x ≠ - 4 as number of days can not be negative.
∴ x = 6 and x + 6 = 6 + 6 = 12
∴ Nishu takes 6 days and Pintu takes 12 day to complete the work alone.
ii) Find k, if the sum of the roots of the quadratic equation x2 - 4kx + k + 3 = 0 is twice their product.
= =
αβ =k+3 c
a
k + 3
− 6
∴ k=-1
5) Answer the following (Any One) 3
i) Car A travels x km for every litre of petrol, while car B travels (x + 5) km for every litre of petrol.
i. Write down the number of litres of petrol used by car A and car B in covering a distance of 400km.
ii. If car A uses 4 litres of petrol more than car B in covering 400 km, write down an equation, in x and
solve it to determine the number of litres of petrol by car B for the journey.
x + 5
400 ( x + 5 − x
x (x − 5)
) =4
=4
400 (x + 5 − x)
x ( x + 5)
400 × 5
x2 + 5x
=4
2000 = 4x2 + 20x
4x2 + 20x - 2000 = 0
x2 + 5x - 500 = 0 (Dividing by 4)
x2 + 25x - 20x - 500 = 0
x (x + 25) - 20 (x + 25) = 0
(x + 25) (x - 20) = 0
Either x + 25 = 0, then x = -25, but it is not
possible as it is in negative
or x - 20 = 0, then x = 20.
∴ Petrol used by car B = 20 - 4
= 16 litres.
ii) A natural number is greater than the other by 5. The sum of their squares is 73. Find the numbers.
