Judge Feliciano Belmonte Sr. High School: Mathematics Department

1) The document outlines a lesson plan for teaching harmonic sequences to 10th grade students. Key objectives include understanding harmonic sequences, which are sequences where the reciprocals of the terms form an arithmetic sequence. 2) Examples are provided to illustrate harmonic sequences, including finding the next term and specified terms. Students will work in groups on activities like identifying harmonic sequences and finding terms. 3) The lesson aims to help students recognize the relationship between harmonic and arithmetic sequences, where the common difference of reciprocals determines the next term in a harmonic sequence.

Lesson Plan for Week 10 of S.Y. 2018 - 2019

Inclusive Dates: July 19, 2019 Literacy Level: Grade 10

Learning Facilitator: Maria Theresa C. Cuenco

(Harmonic Sequence)

I. Objectives
Content Standard: Demonstrates understanding of key concepts of sequences, polynomials
and polynomial equations.
Performance Standard: The learner is able to formulate and solve problems involving sequences,
polynomials and polynomial equations in different disciplines through appropriate and accurate
representations.
Learning Competency:
1. Illustrates other types of sequences (e.g. harmonic sequence) (M10AL-If-1)

II. Content: Patterns and Algebra

Topic: Harmonic Sequence

III. Learning Resources:

A. References:
Learner’s Materials Pages : 38-44
Other Learning Resources: Visual aids, chalk, board, strips of cartolina

IV. Procedures:
A. Reviewing Previous Lesson or Presenting the New Lesson

Drill: (Flash Cards)

Instruction: Determine the reciprocals and the lowest term of the following:

𝟒 𝟕 𝟔 𝟓 𝟐 𝟒 𝟕 𝟔 𝟑 𝟖
𝟑 𝟓 𝟏 𝟐 𝟏 𝟏 𝟒 𝟒 𝟗 𝟐

Review/Motivation:

Do You Remember Me?

Determine whether each sequence is arithmetic, geometric, or neither. If the sequence is
arithmetic, give the common difference; if geometric, give the common ratio.

1. 8, 16, 24, 32, … AS

2. -3, -6, -12, -24, … GS

𝟏 𝟏 𝟏 𝟏
3. 𝟐, 𝟒, 𝟔, 𝟖, … N

4. -5, -2, 1, 4, … AS

𝟏 𝟏 𝟏 𝟏
5. − 𝟒𝟐, − 𝟑𝟓, − 𝟐𝟖, − 𝟐𝟏
, .. N
B. Establishing a Purpose for the Lesson:

 From the motivation, notice that items 3 and 5 are neither arithmetic nor geometric sequence.
 Let the students discover the pattern and come up with the ideas that will lead to the
definition of the next topic.
 For example number 3, ½, ¼, 1/6, and 1/8, by taking the reciprocal of these numbers we will
get 2, 4, 6, and 8, which is an example of an arithmetic sequence. So example number 3 is an
example of harmonic sequence.
 Harmonic Sequence is a sequence such that the reciprocals of the terms form an arithmetic
sequence.
 Recall the formula of the arithmetic sequence and let the student derive the formula for
harmonic sequence.

𝒂𝒏 = 𝒂𝟏 + (𝒏 − 𝟏) 𝒅

to

𝟏
𝑯𝒏 =
𝒂𝟏 + (𝒏−𝟏) 𝒅

C. Presenting Examples/Instances of the Lesson

Give examples
 Example1:
What is the next term of the harmonic sequence 1/5, 1/11, 1/17, 1/23?
Solution:
First, get the reciprocal of each term 5, 11, 17, 23
Second, find the common difference d = 11 – 5 = 6
Third, add the common difference to the last term of the AS 23 + 6 = 29
Fourth, get the reciprocal of 29 and that will be the next term of the HS. 1/29

 Example 2:
Find the 9th term of the harmonic sequence ½, 1/5, 1/8,…

 Example 3:
What is the common difference in the denominator of the harmonic sequence whose 1st
term is 1/10 and the 6th term equal to 1/5? What is the 2nd harmonic sequence?

D. Discussing New Concepts and Practicing New Skills #1

Board work:
1. What is the next term in the harmonic sequence 1/4, 1/8, 1/12, 1/16, …?
2. What is the next term in the harmonic sequence 1/3, 1/8, 1/13, 1/18, …?
3. What is the next term in the harmonic sequence 1/13, 1/10, 1/7, ¼, …?
4. What is the next term in the harmonic sequence 1/11, 1/15, 1/19, 1/23, …?
