Experiment 1: Objectives

1. The document describes an experiment to purify crude vanillin through recrystallization. 2 grams of crude vanillin are dissolved in hot water and allowed to cool, causing vanillin crystals to form. 2. The crystals are then vacuum filtered to separate them from the solvent. The mass of the recrystallized vanillin is weighed to determine the recovery percentage. 3. Recrystallization works by exploiting the temperature-dependent solubility of solids in solvents - impurities remain in solution while the purified compound crystallizes out upon cooling.

EXPERIMENT 1

=================================================================

RECRYSTALLIZATION OF VANILLIN

=================================================================

OBJECTIVES

1. To purify the crude vanillin through recrystallization technique

2. To determine the recovery percentage of recrystallized vanillin.

INTRODUCTION

Recrystallization is a technique utilizes the observation that the solubility of solids

in liquids usually increases dramatically as the solvent temperature is increased. A
barely saturated solution of the solid in the hot solvent is prepared and allowed to
cool. The solubility decreases as the temperature drops. Solid crystallizes back out
upon cooling. These impurities pass through the final cold filtration.

APPARATUS

1. 250 ml Erlenmeyer flask

2. Hot plate
3. Glass rod
4. Buchner funnel
5. Filter paper

CHEMICALS

1. Crude vanillin
2. Distilled water

1
PROCEDURE

1. Weigh 2 g of vanillin into a 250 mL Erlenmeyer flask.

2. Add 50 mL of distilled water to the flask and stir vigorously.
3. Heat the solution just to the boiling point and stir until all the vanillin dissolves.
4. Place the flask in an ice bath for 5 min and stir occasionally.
5. Place a properly fitted piece of filter paper in the Buchner funnel to make sure
that all of the holes are covered.
6. Wet the paper thoroughly with distilled water and vacuum filter the crystallized
vanillin crystals.
7. Rinse the Erlenmeyer flask twice with 5 mL of ice-cooled distilled water and use
this water to wash the crystals in the funnel.
8. Empty the crystals onto a weighed piece of filter paper and place them in
desiccator for drying.
9. After drying procedure, weigh the recrystallized vanillin and record the data.

QUESTIONS

1. Define percent recovery.

2. Vanillin solution is cooled in an ice bath before vacuum filtration. Briefly explain.

3. Discuss on how the recrystallization technique remove solvent soluble impurities.

4. Gravity and vacuum filtration separate insoluble solids from a liquid phase.
The choice depends on conditions. Suggest criteria you would apply to choose
between them.

RESULT

Mass of crude vanillin + container g

Mass of container g

Mass of crude vanillin g

Mass of filter paper g
