Sex education refers to a formal program taught in schools to educate adolescents about issues relating to human sexuality and increase their awareness. In the Philippines, a very religious Catholic country, sex education programs are controversial and opposed by some churches and parents. Supporters argue that sex education aims not to encourage sex but to provide proper knowledge on the topic and reduce unwanted pregnancies, abortions, and STIs when taught comprehensively throughout a student's school years. However, others see it as promoting premarital sex in conflict with religious values. Implementing sex education could help address issues facing Filipino teens like unwanted pregnancies and STIs, but it also faces religious and cultural opposition in the predominantly Catholic nation.

Sex Education refers to a formal program in which advocates, parents,

Philippines is an extremely religious country that most of it’s people
are catholic. It’s not a surprise that many will oppose on this program, churches and even parents. According to Agbulos, G. (2017) in his article “Sex Education: Do we need it?” he stated that the point of the sex education is not to teach teenagers to have sex. It is there to give them proper comprehensive knowledge on the topic. He added that sex education is like scaring adolescent into chastity, abstinence and using the “If you have sex before you get married you will die.” In addition, Gabe L. (2017) stated that sex education should be mandatory, comprehensive, medically accurate, and taught throughout student’s school years. He added that it’s a fundamental duty as a society to educate the next generation. According to Fr. Magsino, C. (2014) stated that education about human sexuality is “ambivalent”: It can be the bearer of two values good or bad. The root of ambivalence is the nature of human sexuality itself ; it is at the same time a physical and natural event, and also a personal and spiritual event. If these two components were separated then the so called “Sex Education” does not really become education but simply “information.” And as everyone knows, information can be mishandle and can end up with sad and catastrophic consequence. As this issue continuously argued the real problem is being set- aside. Instead of focusing on the real problem which is why teens are engaging in this kind of activity? Do parents have a lacking of guidance? Our country need this program, though we have the law which is Responsible Parenthood and Reproductive Health Act of 2012, but this is still optional with the schools, Churches and parents should understand, because this may reduce the unwanted pregnancies, abortion, and STI’s (Sexually transmitted Infection’s). Parents should understand and know that they should be the first one who will educate their Children about the said issue. Sex education should be implemented. This might help our country to decrease the number of teenage pregnancies and the transitions of STI’s. Sex Education is not literally teaching teens to have and how to make love, always bear in mind the sex education is not teaching your children “how babies are conceive and born” Rubin & Kindendall, Sex Education will teach the youngster on how to be responsible and to avoid having sex at their early age. Educating adolescent about these issues will help them to have a knowledge on what are the outcomes of having pre-marital sex. Philippines is a Christian country, it’s not a surprise that many will opposed this kind of program/advocacy. But this is what our country need to decrease the incidence of teenage pregnancies and abortion, we should do it. Church should understand that this program is what our future generation needs.
