Sampling Survey

The document outlines 12 survey sampling questions related to simple random sampling without and with replacement. The questions cover topics such as writing all possible samples of a given size, finding probabilities of units being selected together, estimating proportions and means from samples, and determining if sample means are unbiased estimators of population means. Formulas are provided for variance estimates of sample means and probabilities of units being selected in simple random sampling.

Sampling Survey

1. For a population containing 5 units, denoted by U = (1, 2, 3, 4, 5), write all the
simple random samples without replacement of size 3 (SRSWOR(5,3)). Find the
probability of drawing (1,2,3). [2018]

2. For a population containing 4 units (1,2,3,4). Write all possible simple random
samples with replacement of size 2. [2017]

3. Let π be the proportion of an attribute in a population size N. For an SRSWR

(N,n), find an unbiased estimator of π with its variance. [2018]

4. From an SRSWOR size n, suggest an unbiased estimator of the population mean.

Also find the variance of the estimator. For the above sampling set-up, give an
approximate value of the sample size n when the event that the difference be-
tween the sample and the population means is not more than some preassigned
quantity with probability 1 − α .[2017]

5. For an SRSWOR(N,n), show that the sample mean is the BLUE of the popula-
tion mean. [2018]

6.

7. Describe the basic principles of sample surveys. [2018]

8. Write briefly the advantages of sample survey over complete enumeration. [2017]

9. For an SRSWOR(N,n), find the probability that units ui and uj occur together
in the sample. [2018]

1
10. Let ti be the number of times that a unit ui occurs in an SRSWR(N,n). Show that
(t1 , t2 , . . . , tN follows a multinomial distribution with parameters to be obtained.
Use the above result to show that sample mean is an unbiased estimator of the
population mean. Also from the above results, find variance of the sample mean.
[2018]

11. Show that in SRSWOR(N,n), an unbiased estimator of V (ȳ) is given by

N −n 2
V̂ (ȳ) = s
Nn

; where s2 is given by s2 = 1
n−1
(yi − ȳ)2 [2018]

12. For an SRSWR of size of size n from a popuulation of size N, find the probability
of the first unit u1 is selected in the sample. [2017]
