Title: Food preservation


Aim: To investigate the growth of mould on bread under different conditions
Introduction: State the conditions that promote growth of microorganisms
Materials: Bread, plastic bags, string, water, salt, sugar, vinegar.
Diagram
Method: 1. Toast a slice of bread to remove the water/moisture
2. Cut the bread into six equal sizes
3. Set up apparatus as follows
Bag # 1: Moisten the bread with water and put into the bag, then close it using a string
Bag # 2. Place a dry piece of bread into the bag and then close it using the string
Bag # 3: Place a dry piece of bread into a bag and leave in open air.
Bag # 4: Cover the bread with concentrated salt solution, and close the bag using string
Bag # 5: Cover the bread with concentrated sugar solution and close the bag
Bag # 6: Cover the bread with vinegar and close the bag
4. Examine the bags over a period of 3-4 days without removing the bread from the bags
5. Make all observation and record it on a table

Discussion: Explain how EACH of the conditions in the experiment affected the growth of
the bread mould (include any other relevant information) (6 marks)
