The document outlines a Sunday school lesson about the story of the 12 spies sent by Moses to scout the Promised Land of Canaan, with 10 spies doubting that the Israelites could take the land due to its fortified cities and strong inhabitants while Joshua and Caleb had faith that God would give them victory as He promised. The Israelites were punished to wander in the wilderness for 40 years, one year for each day the spies explored Canaan, with all the doubting spies dying except for Joshua and Caleb who trusted in God.

(They go on a mission on enemy territory to find out about their enemy… they give a report on ) C. Our lesson is about 2 spies named Joshua and Caleb. They were not ordinary spies who reported what they saw. They were spies who trusted God and were not afraid of what they saw with their eyes. 1. After leaving Egypt, the freed Hebrew slaves loved through the wilderness on their way to the land God had promised them. As they approached Canaan, they stopped in the wilderness at a place called Kadesh Barnea. The Lord told Moses to select a leader from each of the 12 tribes to go and spy out the land ahead. 2. Moses chose a leader from each tribe. (Their names were Shammua, Shaphat, Igal, Palti, Gaddiel, Gaddi, Ammiel, Sethur, Nahbi and Geuel, Joshua and Caleb). 3. Moses told them to find out whether the people in Canaan were strong or weak. How big were their towns and were they fortified? Was the soil fertile or poor? He also asked them to bring back some fruit from the land. 4. The twelve spies set out for the Promised Land. They travelled forty days looking at all the wonderful things the land had to offer. They cut some grapes from a vine and took some pomegranates. The grapes were so huge, two people had to carry it with a pole (like a lechon). 5. After 40 days, they returned to their camp. The spies reported, ‘The land does flow with milk and honey! Here is its fruit. But the people who live there are powerful, and the cities are large and fortified. One of the spies, Caleb, silenced everyone and said, ‘We should go up and take the land, for we can certainly do it.’ (Remember that God had already promised this land to them, and Caleb was confident and trusted God that if He says it is theirs, then they can take it.) 6. Ten of the spies disagreed: ‘We can’t attack these people, they are stronger than us. All the people we saw are huge. Compared to them we seemed like grasshoppers.’ 7. That night the Israelites grumbled and wept. They began to whine and complain. They said, “God cannot help us. We should go back to Egypt and be slaves again.” 8. Two of the spies, Joshua and Caleb, stood up and said, ‘The land we explored is exceedingly good. The Lord will lead us into that land flowing with milk and honey, and give it to us. Don’t rebel against God or be afraid. The Lord is with us not them. Just as those listening were muttering about stoning Joshua and Caleb, the glory of the Lord appeared. 9. God was angry. He told Moses that He would punish their rebellion by keeping them in the wilderness for 40 years, one year for each day the spies had been in Canaan. 10. The ten spies who brought a bad report died of a plague. Only Joshua and Caleb survived - the spies who trusted in God to keep His promises and give them the land. 11. For the next forty years the Israelites wandered around in the wilderness. All those who rebelled against God died. A new generation grew up and they were a generation willing to trust God and take the land God had promised to them – under the leadership of Joshua, supported by Caleb. Craft 12 spies minibook
