GETTY
1. The nose has it. Ford has revamped the looks of the Focus in a recent series of revisions, which
has reinforced the subtle, but effective, styling changes that were unveiled with the launch of this
new generation. The grille and the front of the car are certainly bold – but in a good way.
2. ... as does the cabin. There’s a more sophisticated look to the cabin these days, too, as the Focus
keeps up with the Volkswagens. The driving position is good and the seats are comfortable, while
the materials – especially at upper trim levels – are premium quality.
3. Features galore. DAB, Bluetooth, sat nav, and full connectivity via Ford’s Sync system – the
Focus has all the infotainment you could want. Which isn’t true of most of its rivals.
4. Staying sharp(ish). The Focus used to be the out-and-out class-leader in the handling stakes, but
Ford has dialed back on its dynamic character in recent years. That said, it’s still among the top
three in the segment, so it’s still a good car to drive.
5. It’s the economy. Ford has done some great work with improving the economy of its models – and
the Focus is a case in point. There’s a wide range of efficient engines, including three-cylinder petrol
units that can officially return 60-65mpg, while one Econetic diesel version can manage 83.1mpg
and emit just 88g/km of CO2 (making it exempt from vehicle excise duty).
6. Value for money. The Focus is now a pretty sophisticated small family car, with standards of
styling, kit and materials all more than up to scratch. And when you add in the prices – from £13,995
– it makes a compelling proposition. Which is why only its smaller sibling, the Fiesta, outsells it.
7. ST. The Focus still has hot hatch ST versions for those buyers who want a bit more brawn under
the bonnet – which the 6.5-second 0-62mph time testifies to.
