This document discusses torque and moments. It begins by defining a moment as the turning effect of a force acting at a distance from a fulcrum, and that moments can act clockwise or counterclockwise. It notes that torque is important to investigate because it is used to create tension when tightening or loosening nuts and bolts. The document also states that before this study, terminology around torque and moments was sometimes used interchangeably, and discusses how this study could advance understanding of rotational equilibrium and how objects require an external torque to change their rotation.

Introduction

What was I studying?

-Moment is a turning effect of a force acts on objects that have a fixed point, often
called fulcrum. The turning effect is depends on the size of the force and its distance
from the fulcrum. Moments can act in clockwise and anticlockwise direction. Thus,it
is a vector quantity().Moments of force measure the tendency of an object to rotate
about particular point. This experiment is done to make sure the turning effects are
balanced in which the anticlockwise turning effect of force, F must equal the
clockwise turning effect. A moment is due to unbalanced force along its line of
action.()Hence, the experiment to determine the moments as function of distance
between the origin of coordinates and the point action of the force, the moments of
the angle between the force and the positions vector to the point of action force and
the moment as a function of the force is held, the force exerted to make them in
equilibrium position created a moment.

Why was this topic important to investigate?

Torque is used to create tension and is generated any time workers apply force using
wrenches and similar tools. These rotational movements are used to either tighten or
loosen objects.According to Mountz, an equipment maker specializing in torque
tools, torque is important because it will help ensure nuts and bolts are working as
efficiently as possible. For example, bolts that are too tight and have high amounts
of tension may be more likely to break.Hence, torque is used to overcome this
problem.()

What did we know about this topic before I did this

study?
The terminology used when describing torque can be confusing. Engineers
sometimes use the term moment, or moment of force interchangeably with torque.
The radius at which the force acts is sometimes called the moment arm.
How will this study advance new knowledge or new
ways of understanding?
An object which is not rotating remains not rotating unless acted on by an external
torque. Similarly, an object rotating at constant angular velocity remains rotating
unless acted on by an external torque. The concept of rotational equilibrium is
particularly useful in problems involving multiple torques acting on a rotatable object.
In this case it is the net torque which is important. If the net torque on a rotatable
object is zero then it will be in rotational equilibrium and not able to acquire angular
acceleration.
