Generating Patterns

The document provides a multi-part performance task involving the design and cost calculation of honeycomb table cores for banquet tables. Students are asked to calculate: (1) the cost of a honeycomb core for a 15-foot diameter table, (2) the total cost for honeycomb cores for 80 tables that are also 15 feet in diameter, and (3) additional fees including 6.35% sales tax and a 10% shipping and handling fee for the order of 80 tables. Students are expected to show their mathematical work and explain their solutions clearly in complete sentences for each part.

HONEY COMB PERFORMANCE TASK Name__________________________________

Algebra One date___________________block____________

You are an engineer for Plasticore Corporation who makes custom tables of varying
sizes for banquet halls. You have been asked to design and manufacture round banquet
tables with layered honeycomb cores. Each honeycomb in the core has a height of one foot.
The size of the honeycombs do not change, as the size of the table increases the number of
honeycomb layers increases.

a) Your team at Plasticore has been asked to build a table that measures 15 feet in
diameter. Each individual honeycomb cell costs $0.25 to manufacture, including material and labor costs. What is the
total cost to manufacture the honeycomb core for your table?

b) Plasticore just got an order from the Aquaturf for 80 tables that measure 15’ in diameter. What is the total cost for
the honeycomb cores used to build the 80 tables?

c) Since The Plasticore Corporation is located in the state of Connecticut, Aquaturf has to pay 6.35% sales tax on the
total cost calculated in part (b). Also Plasticore charges a shipping and handling delivery fee of 10% of the pre-tax cost.
Calculate those two extra fees and find the final total cost of the Aquaturf order of eighty 15 feet diameter honeycomb
core tables.

Response Expectations

You are expected to clearly communicate your result for all three parts (a) & (b) & (c) by
 Showing all mathematics used in solving, including any possible tables, graphs and diagrams you might have
used.
 Explaining each part of the work with complete sentences and labels.
 Answer each part with a full complete sentence.

28 points

The following rubric will be used to determine your score on this task. Parts 1 & 2 will be scored on a 4 point scale
depending upon how complete and accurate the work is (0-4 scale – see attached details for particulars in these
categories). Part 3 (scored 1 or 0 on accuracy)

Elements being assessed: Earned Points:

Mathematical Support - this section scores your ability to clearly,
completely and efficiently show the work necessary in solving all the parts
of this task.
a) Total cost of one table (4)

b) Cost of 80 tables (4)

c) Cost of 80 tables with tax and shipping fees (4)

Conceptual Understanding and Communication – this section scores
your ability to explain clearly in words and complete sentences what each
part of your work represents.
c) Total cost of one table (4)

d) Cost of 80 tables (4)

e) Cost of 80 tables with tax and shipping fees (4)

Accuracy of Response – this is score as 1 point for correct or 0 point for
incorrect in each part.
f) Total cost of one table (1)

g) Cost of 80 tables (1)

h) Cost of 80 tables with tax and shipping fees (1)
