Was the null hypothesis supported?_______________
What was the true probability?___________________
Part 2
We are interested in knowing whether Hunter Psychology students differ from the general population in terms of
a personality variable known as Type A behavior.
State the Null Hypothesis for our study: H0: _____ How would this be stated in sentence form?
Using an alpha level of .05, what are the values of z that form the boundaries of the critical region for rejecting
the Null Hypothesis (i.e., what z values separate the middle 95% of outcomes from the extreme 5%)?
z = _____________________________________
What is the number of students in your class who took the minitest? n = __________
__________________________________________________________________________________________
Write a sentence stating your conclusion about Type A behavior in Hunter Psychology students.

(Part 3) A researcher believes that aromatherapy can relieve stress but wants to determine whether it can
also enhance focus. To test this, the researcher selected a random sample of students to take an exam in which
the average score in the general population is 77. Prior to the exam, these students studied individually in a
small library room where a lavender scent was present. If students in this group scored significantly above
the average score in general population (77), then this was taken as evidence that the lavender scent enhanced
focus.
Manually enter the scores into an excel file, starting with the cell in the upper left corner, A1, and then adding
the next score to the cell directly below it. You should have one column that is 45 rows long. Using
commands in excel, you can calculate the mean, standard deviation and standard error in separate cells.
Calculate the Mean of the sample by entering “=Average(A1:A45)” (without the quotation marks). Next,
calculate the Standard Deviation by entering “Stdev(A1:A45). Finally calculate the standard error by entering
“stdev(A1:A45)/sqrt(n)”, where n is the number of students in the list (also the number of rows of data).
90 83 90 56 82 88 79 74 93
75 73 60 76 78 80 77 89 85
88 68 86 82 99 90 70 70 76
80 77 69 94 81 98 50 78 85
98 84 84 60 88 89 68 70 90
After entering the data into Excel, state the following values for the sample:
Sample size (n)
Sample mean
Sample standard deviation
Estimated standard error
Calculate the z-score of each data point in column B. To do this, enter this formula in cell B1 “=(A1-Sample
Mean)/Sample Standard Deviation)”, without the quotation marks, where “Sample Mean” and “Sample Standard
Deviation” are the values you calculated above. Now, copy the cell in B1 and paste it in cells B1 through B45.
You should have z-scores for 45 rows in column B.
Are there any outliers? (Look for z-scores greater than +3 or less than -3) _____________
What is the score has the largest z-score absolute value? _________________
Calculate the one sample t-test and compare it to the critical t-score.
Mean difference (Sample mean – Mean General Population)
Degrees of freedom (df) (n-1)
Critical t-score (consult table, use α=.05)
t-score (Mean difference / Standard Error)
Is the calculated t-score greater than the critical t-score?
Based on these results, what can be concluded about the effect of lavender scent on exam scores? Explain.
