Content Standard:
The learner demonstrates understanding of key concepts of sets and the real number system.

Performance Standard:
The learner is able to formulate challenging situations involving sets and real numbers and solve these
in a variety of strategies.

Learning Competency:
The learner solves problems involving sets.
(M7NS-Ib-2)

I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson 80% of students should be able to:
1. Solve word problems involving sets with the use of Venn diagrams.
2. Apply set operations to solve a variety of word problems.

II. SUBJECT MATTERS


A. Topic: Problems involving Sets
B. References: Math Grade 7 Learner’s Manual (Quarter 1 and 2) pp.13-17
D. Materials: Visual Aids, cut out papers, chalk and eraser

III. PROCEDURE
A. Introductory Activities

Check for understanding
Teacher will show Venn diagrams involving set operations. Teacher will ask students to
identify which set operation is being described on each Venn diagrams.

B. Lesson Proper

1. ACTIVITY: SOLVE ME! (Pair)


Try solving the following problem:
In a class of 40 students, 17 have ridden an airplane, 28 have ridden a boat, 10 have
ridden a train, 12 have ridden both an airplane and a boat, 3 have ridden a train only and 4
have ridden an airplane only. Some students in the class have not ridden any of the three
modes of transportation and an equal number have taken all three.
2. ANALYSIS
a. How many students have used all three modes of transportation?
b. How many students have taken only the boat?

3. ABSTRACTION
Based on the responses of the students from the activity, teacher outlined the topic as
follows:

Venn diagram can be used to solve word problems involving set operations.

Word Problem 1: A group of 25 high school students were asked whether they use either
Facebook or Twitter or both. Fifteen of these students use Facebook and twelve use
Twitter.
a. How many use Facebook only?
b. How many use Twitter only?
c. How many use both of the social networking sites?

Solution:
Let S 1 = set of students who use Facebook only
S 2 = set of students who use both social networking sites
S 3 = set of students who use Twitter only

Venn diagram is shown below

Finding the elements in each region:

n ( S 1 ) +n ( S2 ) +n ( S3 ) =25 n ( S 1 ) +n ( S2 ) +n ( S3 ) =25
n ( S 1 ) +n ( S2 ) =15 n ( S 2 ) +n ( S3 ) =12
n ( S 3 )=10 n ( S 1 )=13
But n ( S 2 ) +n ( S3 ) =12
n ( S 2 )=2

Word Problem 2: (Activity Problem)


Let A= set of students who have ridden an airplane
B= set of students who have ridden a boat
T= set of students who have ridden a train
4. APPLICATION
The following diagram shows how all the First Year students of Ampid National High
School go to school.

1. How many First Year students of Ampid National High School are there?
2. How many students go to school walking only?
3. How many students go to school in a bicycle only?
4. How many students go to school in a tricycle only?
5. How many students go to school in a jeep only?
6. How many students ride in both a jeep and a tricycle?
7. How many students ride in both a jeep and a bicycle?
8. How many students ride in both a bicycle and a tricycle?
9. What is Bicycle ∪ Jeep ∪Tricycle ?
10. What is Bicycle ∩ Jeep ∩Tricycle ?
