Ged102 Assignment

Gerald C. Domingo learned from the video clip that (1) mathematics examines patterns in nature, (2) Fibonacci numbers and the golden ratio help explore nature, and (3) mathematics is the language of science. He is still unclear on (1) ethnomathematics, (2) patterns of movement and irregularity, and (3) ideal forms of nature. He used to think mathematics was just arithmetic but now sees its relation to nature patterns. His questions are (1) how nature patterns reshape math concepts, (2) if all math notions are scientifically valid, and (3) what is meant by math things having no real existence.

NAME: GERALD C.

DOMINGO

SECTION: A16

ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS:

1. Three (3) things that I significantly learned from the video clip

a. Mathematics is the science of patterns. It is examining and understanding the

different patterns, fractal or chaos, of nature. It is the process and capability to
deduce these patterns to further analyze the potential and boundaries of
systematic knowledge of our environment and the environment itself and
manipulating it for the development of civilization of humanity.

b. Fibonacci numbers, golden angle and golden ratio are some of the Mathematical
ideas which greatly help in exploring and understanding the nature. They are the
keys in the analyzation of nature and discovery of secrets and wanders of our
universe.

c. Mathematics is the language of sciences, be it environmental, socio-cultural and

scientific view. It the foundation of all discoveries of nature and basis for
innovation of technologies. It does not merely mean arithmetic and numeric but
rather a deeper sense of unlocking the nature in a systematic manner.

2. Three (3) things that are still unclear to me

a. Ethnomathematics

b. Pattern of movement and irregularity

c. Ideal forms of nature

3. I used to think that…

Mathematics is merely an application of arithmetic and numeric view. Upon

reading the article, it shows the relation of mathematics to our nature.

As mathematics is the science of patterns, it tries to introduce a deeper sense

of the subject where nature is highly regarded and nature’s patterns are the
basis of the notions. It is a systematic study where patterns govern our
nature’s understanding and discovery in a manner that it tries to introduce a
new concept and processes of our nature’s system in such that the
mathematical abstraction is accurate and was governed by scientific laws.

4. Three (3) questions that I want to ask about the video clip

a. How can nature’s patterns reshape the concept and ideals of Mathematics?

b. Are all Mathematical notions universally acceptable and does not violate any
scientific laws?
c. What do we mean by ‘Mathematical things have no existence in real world: they

are abstractions’?
