The document discusses concerns about youth groups in Barangay Maligalig. It notes that some teenagers have been seen sniffing solvents, smoking, drinking, and using drugs in the local market. This behavior is disturbing vendors and residents. The document suggests developing recreational programs for youth to give them skills and constructive activities. It proposes activities like sports competitions and environmental projects to engage youth positively and discourage substance abuse. A proposed project would continue past successful activities like "Trash-Formation" and add tree planting, where youth adopt and care for trees. Competing in barangay ligas or leagues could also motivate youth.

Read the story : A BETTER ALTERNATIVE FOR THE YOUTH OF BARANGAY MALIGALIG

in the Case Analysis Chapter in the module then answer the following questions

1. What are the current concerns of Barangay Maligalig in terms of their youth groups?
The concern of Barangay Maligalig is regarding the alarming threat to their youth‘s welfare. As
they revealed, a few months ago there have been unruly incidents in the market place. Some
of the vendors reported a group of teenagers were seen sniffing solvents and rugby, smoking
cigarettes and drinking alcohol in the area. Other vendors even claimed that they also use drugs
and create a disturbance to the market stalls. These teenagers use the market place as their
tambayan. They can be seen together almost from day to night. They also like to entice others
to join them in their activities, some who refuse were seen with bruises. Moreover, the group
likes to engage into fights with other groups they see as inferior. Sniffing glue is a cheap, but
dangerous way people have used to get high for many years. Solvent glue is one of many
common substances that fall under the category of “inhalants.” Common forms of solvent glues
include model glue and rubber cement. The use of glue and other inhalants, as well as excessive
alcohol consumption, are all possible causes of acute respiratory failure. Ongoing drug and
alcohol abuse, as well other lung problems can also lead to chronic respiratory failure, a
condition in which the body can’t take in enough oxygen over time. In serious cases, chronic
respiratory failure can lead to coma.

2. What plans or undertakings do you suggest to respond to the concerns that Brgy Maligalig is
facing?
A concerned resident suggested that the community need to come up with a recreational
program for the youths other than the regular sportsfest that the barangay hold every summer.
Through the program, he said the youths will gain skills and make better use of their time. All
agreed that on the next meeting all suggested program for the youth shall be presented and
discussed. Treatment for substance abuse and addiction can be delivered in many different
settings using a variety of behavioral approaches. With adults, both individual therapy and group
counseling settings with peers are used. However, studies suggest group therapy can be risky
with a younger age group, as some participants in a group may have negative influence over
the others, or even steer conversation toward stories about having fun with drugs. Some
research suggests that the most effective treatments for teens are those that involve one or more
family members present. Since teens are one of the majority of sniffing drugs the best suggestion
for a program is an activity where teenagers are able to test their skills and at the same time get
tired for the whole day. Sportsfest can also be helpful, enjoyable and educational which can be
held in the barangay itself with gatehred volunteers.

3. Create a project proposal that you wish to implement if Brgy Maligalig is your assigned
barangay?
Some activities that I would like to propose are the same as before successful activities like
"Trash-Formation" which youths learned that more than 20 tons of waste materials — most of
which could have been recycled — were being thrown out annually. To combat this issue, the
Youth Council created a multi part program that aimed to decrease the risk of environmental and
health issues. Project like these can be profitable at the same it kills time for the teenagers so
that they will not think about sniffing solvents in the long run. Tree plantation is a very useful
activity for our environment and it will help to instill the importance and significance of trees in
the student’s life. Each kid should be asked to plant a tree and then ‘adopt’ it. The leader should
then ask teenagers to water it every day, it takes not more than 5 minutes and teenagers will
have a sense of accomplishment once the plants starts to grow at the same time it can also be
sold to other people as well. Conducting barangay ligas can also encourage teenagers to
compete with other barangays and gives them the sense of fulfillment and may be encourage
them to study as well.
