Lab Report 5

This lab report outlines procedures to test for the presence of biomolecules like proteins, carbohydrates, and lipids using egg whites, sugar, starch, and oil. Students will observe any color changes when these substances are treated with iodine or Benedict's solution to identify biomolecules like proteins, carbohydrates like starch and sugars, and lipids. The objective is to conduct tests to identify biological molecules in different substances through a series of procedures and observations.

LAB REPORT #5 Identifying the presence of biomolecules
OBJECTIVE: Conduct a test to identify the presesnce biological molecules in different substance.
Materials: egg white, water, sugar, starch, oil, Benedict solution, iodine, brown paper, alcohol lamp, dropper, test
tube, tong, beaker, gauze, rags and dishwashing liquid

Procedure:
Fat Test
a) Draw 5 circles on your brown paper and label each circle; egg whites, oil, starch, and sugar.
b) Take your brown paper to the lab table and put 2 drops of water in the water circle, 2 drops of egg in the egg
white circle, continue with oil, starch, and sugar.
c) Leave the brown paper on the side to dry. Once dry, record you results.

*Fats are nutrients that provide a source of energy that carry vitamins to body cells. To test for fat: Spread food
within circles on a brown bag. Wait for foods to evaporate and check for grease spots by holding up to the light. The
size of the grease spot indicates the amount of fat.
Describe the result.

Strarch Test
a) Get 4 test tubes and label each with water, egg whites, oil, starch, and sugar.
b ) Add 5 drops of water into each of the test tubes.
c) Add 3 drops of Iodine to the test tubes. Record your result
* To test for Starch: Place foods in a spot plate. Add Iodine solution – a color change from brown to a blue-black
indicates starch is present.

Simple Sugar Test

a) Get 4 test tubes and label each with egg whites, oil, starch, and sugar.
b) Add 5 drops of water into each of the test tubes.
c) Add 15 drops of Benedict’s solution into each test tube.
d) Note any immediate color changes then heat all 5 test tubes in a hot water bath for 5 minutes.
e) A color change from blue to green or orange indicates that simple sugars are present. A positive result!

Guide Qustions:
1. What is the approximate C:H:O ratio in each of the following types of macromolecules?

2. What other elements are commonly associated with each of these four types of macromolecules?

3. What makes RNA different from DNA? Give atleast 3.

4. Give some description to identify the different biomolecules.
