Graph of Quadratic Function: Lesson 1

The document discusses graphing quadratic functions and determining their properties. It has the student graph transformations of the parent function y=x^2 by changing coefficients and constants. Changing the leading coefficient determines if the parabola opens up or down. Shifting the graph left or right is done by changing the h value in the equation y=(x-h)^2, and shifting the graph up or down is done by changing the k value in y=(x-h)^2+k. The student is asked to describe graphs of various quadratic functions without drawing them.

LESSON 1: Graph of Quadratic Function

Objectives:
1. Graphs a quadratic function and determine the following: a) domain, b) range c) intercepts, d) axis of
symmetry, e) vertex, f) direction of the opening of the parabola.
2. Determine the transformations of a quadratic function given its vertex form.

Graph the parent function 𝑦 = 𝑥 2 then graph the following in a single Cartesian Plane.

1. What value changed?

𝑦 = 2𝑥 2
𝑦 = 5𝑥 2 What changes in the graph
1 occurred?
𝑦 = 𝑥2
2
1
𝑦 = 𝑥2
8

2. What value changed?

𝑦 = −2𝑥 2
𝑦 = −5𝑥 2 What changes in the graph
1 occurred?
𝑦 = − 𝑥2
2
1
𝑦 = − 𝑥2
8

3. What value changed?

𝑦 = 𝑥2 + 2
𝑦 = 𝑥 2 +1 What changes in the graph
𝑦 = 𝑥2 + 4 occurred?
𝑦 = 𝑥 2 +3
4. What value changed?
2
𝑦 =𝑥 −1
𝑦 = 𝑥2 − 2 What changes in the graph
𝑦 = 𝑥2 − 3 occurred?
𝑦 = 𝑥2 − 4

What value changed?

5.
𝑦 = (𝑥 − 1)2 What changes in the graph
𝑦 = (𝑥 − 2)2 occurred?
𝑦 = (𝑥 − 3)2
𝑦 = (𝑥 − 4)2

6. What value changed?

𝑦 = (𝑥 + 1)2
𝑦 = (𝑥 + 2)2 What changes in the graph
𝑦 = (𝑥 + 3)2 occurred?
𝑦 = (𝑥 + 4)2

Generalization:
 The leading coefficient: a
- When the leading coefficient is positive, the parabola opens ______________ and the
vertex is a ______________.
- When the leading coefficient is negative, the parabola opens ______________ and the
vertex is a ______________.
- When |𝑎| > 1, the graph gets ______________
- When 0 < |𝑎| < 1, the graph gets ______________
Generalization:
 The value of h
- Determines the __________________ shift. It tells if the movement is to the __________
(when h is positive) or to the ______________ (when h is negative)
- Affects the ______________________.
 The value of k
- Determines the __________________ shift. It tells if the movement is to the __________
(when k is positive) or to the ______________ (when k is negative)
- Affects the ______________________.

Without graphing, describe the graph of the following functions with regards to the parent function.
1. 𝑦 = (𝑥 − 7)2

4. 𝑦 = −2(𝑥 − 1)2 + 5

2. 𝑦 = (𝑥 + 1)2 − 4

5. 𝑦 = −3(𝑥 − 4)2 − 3

3. 𝑦 = 2(𝑥 + 2)2 + 3
