Dialogue: between two friends


In western countries it is polite or even expected that compliments are Jeong-min: Hi Ji-eun. Long time no see.
exchanged between friends. Many verbal compliments focus on:
 Actions or Work, Ji-eun: Hi Jeong-min. Oh, did you cut your hair?
◦ You played a good game. Jeong-min: Yes, but I'm not sure how I feel about it.
◦ Your presentation was very interesting.
Ji-eun: Really? You look great. Where did you get it cut?
 Talent or Looks Jeong-min: At Home Plus...do you really like it.
◦ (general) That was amazing. Ji-eun: Trust me you look fantastic.
◦ (specific) Wow, you sing very well.
◦ You got a new haircut, it looks great. Note: by complimenting the haircut and asking where Jeong-min had it done
the compliment is reinforced as being truthful.
◦ That color looks great on you.
Written Work:
 Food 1. Where did Jeong-min get her hair cut? _____________________________
◦ Hmmm, this tastes so _________ how did you make it?
2. How does she feel about it? _____________________________________
 Purchases 3. Look around the room and write one compliment about a classmate.:
◦ I love your new car . ___________________________________________________________
◦ Oh, that bag is so cute.

 Family Exercise: Compliment your partner about the following items. Your partner
◦ Your children seem so bright / cute / active . should respond.
 A new dress, shirt or something they are wearing.
Ideally, we should mean what we say but its not always possible.  A new hair cut
 A talent or something at work
We also have non-verbal forms of positive gestures such as:  A meal they just cook
 thumbs up or
 high fives

Responding to compliments
 How kind of you to say so.
 Thank you.
 I'm glad you like it.
