● What is historiography? ○ Historiography is the study and methodology of history. In other words, it is the history of history. Studying historiography is about understanding the different interpretations of the past by various historians. ● Biography of the Four HIstorians ○ Teodoro Agoncillo ■ Teodoro Andal Agonicollo was born on November 9, 1912 in Lemery, Batangas to Pedro and Feliza Agoncillo. He studied in the University of the Philippines and graduated in 1934 with a bachelor’s degree in philosophy. The following year he obtained a master’s degree in the arts from the same university. He published his first work entitled “Revolt of the Masses: The Story of Bonifacio and the Katipunan” in the year 1956. 2 years later he joined the faculty in the University of the Philippines and became chairperson of the Department of History. Agoncillo is considered to be one of the most prominent historians of our time. He branched out from the conventional writing of Philippine history and introduced a more Filipino-centric style of writing which is through the perspectives of Filipinos. ○ William Henry Scott ■ William Henry Scott, born as Henry King Ahrens, was born on July 10 1921 in Detroit, Michigan. Scott comes from a Dutch-Lutheran descent and spent most of his childhood in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. He studied in schools such as Yale University, and Yale University. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1942-1946. After this, he taught in various places around the world and eventually moved to the Philippines and taught in the St. Mary’s School in Sagada. During martial law in 1972, he was accused of being a communist and was arrested for a while but eventually was exonerated. He observed the Igorot tribe from the Cordillera region and preserved some of their pre-colonial artifacts. In addition to this, he debunked the Kalantiaw legend and criticised fellow historian Henry Otley. Some of his famous works include: The Discovery of the Igorots, and Cracks in the Parchment Curtain and Other Essays in Philippine History. ○ Reynaldo Ileto ■ Reynaldo Clemena Ileto was born on October 3, 1946. He received his academic degrees from Ateneo de Manila University and Cornell Universities. After which, he taught in different schools such as the University of the Philippines, De la Salle University, National University Singapore, and James Cook University. He then joined the faculty of the Austrailian National University as a reader in Asian studies. He is the leading scholar of the Philippine revolution. His work in history is considered to be interdisciplinary because he involves literature, religion and cultural studies. Ileto’s work mainly focuses on the Revolution of the Philippines from the 19th century to the early 20th century. He has provided a newer and fresher perspective to the revolution by focusing his work on the ordinary people rather than the elites. Some of his most notable works are the following: Knowledge and Pacification: On the U.S. Conquest and the Writing of Philippine History and Historians and Unfinished Revolution: Trajectories of Philippine Historical Writing from the U.S. Conquest to the Present. ○ Zeus Salazar ■ Zeus Atayza Salazar was born on April 29, 1934 in Tiwi, Albay. He is the eldest son of Luz and Ireneo Salazar. He took up his higher education in the University of the Philippines Diliman and received a bachelor’s degree in history in the year 1955. He graduated as U.P.’s very first summa cum laude in the history program. Salazar became assistant instructor in the Department of History in U.P. and eventually continued his studies in Paris, France. There, he was able to attain various academic credentials. He is said to be one of the most illustrious historians, following the footsteps of Teodoro Agoncillo. In addition he refreshed the nationalistic perspective after it was lost during the Marcos years. Some of his famous works include: Pantayong Pananaw and Kasaysayan ng Pilipinas: Isang Balangkas. ● The Philippines Under Japan: About the Authors ○ Ikehata Setsuho ■ Ikehata Setsuho is a professor in the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, specializing in Southeast Asian history. She holds degrees from the University of Tokyo and the University of the Philippines. In addition to this, she is chairman of the Joint Research Forum for Philippine-Japan Relations and is president of the Japan Society for Southeast Asian History. Her work mainly focuses on the social-history of the Philippines in the nineteenth-century, the Philippine Revolution, and the Japanese occupation in the Philippines. ○ Ricardo Jose ■ Ricardo Trota Jose is a professor from the Department of History, and the College of Social Sciences and Philosophy at the University of the Philippines. He obtained his Ph.D. from the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies. He was also the former director of the Third World Studies Center.
