Q1 Answer the following questions: Short answer type (2 x 10)
a) What is the effect of shifting the inductor to the source side in switched
mode rectifier?
b) How to select the duty ratio in case of a switched mode rectifier?
c) Which kind of semi converter (single phase) configuration is normally
used and why?
d) What is the modulation index for a PWM control?
e) What are the effects of series loading in a series resonant inverter?
f) In SVM why two consecutive voltage vectors are selected for
synthesizing the reference voltage vectors?
g) What is total harmonic distortion and how it is related to distortion
factor?
h) What will happen in forward converter if we select tertiary turns equal to
primary turns and duty ratio greater than 0.5?
i) What is the dead zone of a resonant inverter?
j) Draw the basic circuit of L-type and M-type resonant converter switch.

Q2 a) Derive the expressions for voltage ripple and current ripple in a buck (10)
converter.
b) In a buck boost converter, the input voltage is 12V, the duty cycle is (10)
k=0.26 and the switching frequency is 25 kHz. The inductance
L=150µH and filter capacitance C=220µF. The average load current
Ia=1.25A. Determine (a) the average output voltage, (b) peak to peak
output voltage ripple. (c) Peak to peak current ripple and (d) critical
values of L & C?

Q3 a) Explain the operation of a flying capacitor type multilevel inverter with (10)
circuit diagram.
b) What is reactive power compensation using multilevel inverter? Explain (10)
using phasor diagrams?

Q4 a) For three phase SVM Based inverter, derive the expressions of (10)
durations for which the consecutive voltage vectors are to be applied in
order to synthesize Vref, in case the reference vector is lying in sector
two.
b) What do you mean by pulse of appropriate polarity in SVM? (10)

Q5 a) Explain the operation of a forward converter with circuit diagram and (10)
waveforms.
b) A basic series resonant inverter with bidirectional switches has C=2µF, (10)
L=20µH, R=0, and Vs=220V. the switching time of the transistor is
tsw=12µs. the output frequency is f0=20kHz. Determine (a) peak supply
current Ip, (b) average device current IA, (c) rms device current IR.

Q7 a) Write notes on Current regulated PWM voltage source inverter (10)


b) Explain the operation with circuit diagram and wave forms of three (10)
phase series inverter.
