SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The result of the study will benefit the following:

This study will support the students in determining their study habits either it is good or
bad. On the other hand, this study will also help to improve the student’s academic performance.

PARENTS – For them to understand the causes of their child’s behavior and attitude towards
learning. To make them understand that there are effects of study habits in a particular subject
and how they can help their child to improve their good study habits.

STUDENTS – They will have better chances of maintaining their grades likewise gives them a
more focused and clear perspective on how study affects their academic performance.

TEACHERS – Will also help in understanding better the diversity of learning of their students.
As such, it is hoped that they could develop more effective methodologies in teaching their
subject matter.

SCHOOL ADMINISTRATOR – Like subject area coordinator may also be guided of education
policies, and strategies toward a more effective delivery of learning.

FUTURE RESEARCHERS – They may able to use the result of the study in father research
similar to what the study is.
DEFINITION OF TERMS

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter clearly designs the research methods used to conduct the study. The
researchers explain how the necessary data and information to address the research objectives
and questions was collected, presented and analyzed. Reasons and justifications for the research
design, research instruments, research respondents, research environment, and research
procedures are given below.

RESEARCH DESIGN
Heppner et al (1992:15) describe a research design as a plan or structure for an
investigation or a list of specifications and procedure for conducting and controlling a research
project. In other words, it can be described as a master plan which indicates the strategies for
conducting a research.
However, this study used qualitative research methods. Qualitative descriptive
research focuses on non-statistical methods of inquiry and analysis of social problems.
Qualitative research is concerned with the opinions, experiences, and feelings of individuals
producing subjective data (Hancock, 1998). This study was designed to closely investigate the
factors that affected the study habits of the 2nd year Marine Engineering Students.

RESEARCH ENVIRONMENT
The research study will be conducted at University of Cebu Lapu-Lapu and
Mandaue campus. The University of Cebu Lapu-Lapu and Mandaue is an educational institution
in Mandaue, City, Philippines. It is a satellite campus of the University of Cebu,Which is located
at A.C Cortes Ave, Looc, Mandaue City.
It was a beginning marked by simplicity, by modesty. A period stamped with
nothing but desire and hope: the desire to ordinary young men and women with the good and the
hope that doing so many improve the quality of lives. May mean the realization of their dreams
through UCLM.
It’s at the foot of the old Mactan Bridge, connecting the cities of Cebu and Lapu-
Lapu. Lapu-Lapu is the location of the Cebu International Airport, one’s gateway to the vibrant
leisure and tourism industry of Cebu. UCLM in this sense provides for its student trainings and
education responsive to the bigger of its locate that is thriving with endless opportunities. ( See
Appendix C for the location map)

RESEARCH RESPONDENTS
The respondents of this study are the 2nd year Marine Engineering Students of
University of Cebu Lapu-Lapu and Mandaue. There will be a total of eight section second year
Marine Engineering Students. Which will be considered as respondents. There will be a randomly
selection of ten respondents for the said below.

RESEARCH INSTRUMENT
This study used self-mode evaluation questionnaires to collect the data. The
reasons why the researchers preferred questionnaire, over other instruments are highlighted
below.
Cohen et al. (2011:3777) purpose that a questionnaire is a widely used and useful
instrument for collecting survey information providing structured, often numerical data that is
administered without the presence of the researcher and often comparatively straight forward to
analyze. The main advantage of using a questionnaire is its effectiveness in collecting quality data
that is easy to interpret so that quality findings will be achieved.
This study applies closed ended question where positive answers are defined in
advance and so the respondent is limited to one of the pre- coded responses given (Mat hers et
al.,2007:20) Highly structured closed and ended question are useful because they can generate
frequencies of responses amenable to statistical treatment and analysis and are quicker to code
and analyze than word based data.

THEORETICAL BACKGROUND

This study is anchored on the “Theory of Good study Habits” (2012) by John Wesley P.

This states that there is a wide range of benefits to practicing good study habits for a students for

a students. The pay off will likely be major improvement in academic grades. Even professionals

can benefits from practicing good study habits. Most business reward their workers for

researching ways to help improve the company. Good study habits limitless.

In other explanation on the theory of the habits some of student in Marine Engineering

will drop out because of their behavior, they affected their study by always absent not attending

class on time sometimes late. That’s why other student will drop out other student will be failed.

Being a student of Marine Engineering we have to pass project on time avoid cutting classes or

absents. To make our studies will not be affected.

This study is anchored on the Asian Journal of basic an (2015). By Edwin M. Argenay.

This states that social interaction of the students within the classroom involves the teachers and

their classroom where teaching and learning activities are being facilitated which need to be

improved and addressed some factors that may somehow influence the learning process of the

Marine Transportation and Marine Engineering Students in one Private Asian University. This

study aimed to determine the difference ono the attitude between Marine Transportation and

Marine Engineering Students towards the classroom social environment in terms of teacher as to

character, subject, mastery and teaching strategy, as well as in terms of their strategy as well as in

terms of their interpersonal relationships without other students.

This study of Marine Engineering Students affecting their habit of study, because of their

behavior in attending class, passing their projects. Some of 2nd year Marine Engineering Students
affecting their habit of studies also to their attitude by always absent, late in going school. That’s

why some of them will be drop out or failed.

CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Rationale of the Study

Philippines also known as the highest workers in abroad, because of the seafarer.

Therefore Maritime Industry advice the seafarer on how to cooperate or communicate with other

seafarer to avoid accident. In the ship we don’t know the attitude of every seafarer. The

international ship have different kind of onboard seafarer they have there own culture so we must

have respect each other, that can’t hurt other feelings. That’s why the Maritime colleges teach the

student in good habits of the study and also by communicating a good relationships of other

cadets. Now a days many of the students affecting their habits of study, because of the

temptations that they do. Some of the students they don’t like to go to school because they go

somewhere that can make their life to be happy like playing computer games, billiard and mostly

they drink alcoholic wine. That’s why some of students affecting their habits of study, because of

making bad things.

In University of Cebu Lapu-Lapu and Mandaue some of the students affecting their habit

of study, the reason is like cutting classes, that’s why student can’t graduate because they failed,

or they get unexpected high grade. The life of student never give up even if were tired to go to

school, because the future belongs to they. They can’t give it to the other people like friends or

else. A seafarer is not just an easy job, so if a student they must have to obey the rule in school,

before they become a great seafarer study hard attending class and learn to love and respect

yourself by small things.

The 2nd year college marine engineering student some of them affecting their habits of

study some of them lock of financial support and other students not attending class. If the
students 2nd year college marine engineering. If they habit to study and always attending class

they never missed any points in every exam or discussions by the instructor. They get high grade

and have good performance in school and no one will be failed or drop out. We can’t blame the

instructor if get low grade because they base on our performance in attending class also making

projects. Other students can’t attend class because of their haircuts they missed the discussion or

exams, that can cause getting low grades. Some of marine engineering students are like feeling

chill Maritime students in University of Lapu-Lapu and Mandaue choosing this maritime

profession this affect how they determined to work towards the maritime profession and together

this can also be key to boost their academic performance in choosing this profession.

The purpose of this study is to the maintain the study habits of the students and also to

gain more knowledge when they are graduated. And to know who students are not focusing on

their studies. To enhancing the attitude of the students of Marine Engineering Students towards

the school would help them to achieve the proper way of learning skills.
