ORFF-SCHULWERK
~ Music, Movement and Games ~
Workshop by Carmen Domínguez
This a traditional Norwegian song game for children. You will find it and many more on
this site: http://www.nordicsounds.info which is full of Nordic songs and games to apply
in class. I learned the song during the presentation of the website at the International
Orff-Schulwerk Forum in Salzburg.

Tikkuristi (Finland)
This is a very popular dance-game in Finland. The music is always accelerating until there
is only one dancer left. I learned this game from my friend Elisa Seppänen during our
Special Course in Salzburg.

Jerigonza (Spain)
This is the adapted and simplified version of a traditional Galician dance called Jerigonza.
A version closer to the original but a little more complicated to play is detailed below.
The original lyrics are of course in Galician.
The coda is an addition of mine to ease children to change partners in addition to
working the interval of 5th J.
On the other hand, the dance version proposed in two concentric circles is due to
didactic purposes. It takes elements of the original dance but it is not 100 % rigorous.

Monster’s game
Once upon a time there were some very special space explorers who were discovering
new planets and their inhabitants.
The most important thing they had to do was to get the friendship of these inhabitants.
After much thinking they decided to always present themselves with music. After all,
music is the universal language and they did not want to generate misunderstandings.
It was important to make clear his friendly intentions.
Fist of all you create the monsters and then you can create stories or music related to
them.
Instructions to create the monsters:
1. Choose a thing of what is missing: eyes, nose, mouth, ears, arms or legs.
2. Roll the dice and discover how many of them you should draw. Ting!!!!
Question/Answer game.

Con la lluvia crece el río With the rain the river grows
Y las ranitas hacen croa croa And the little frogs make croa croa
Y despierta la matica (plantita) And the little plant wakes up
Que duerme en la semillita It sleeps in the little seed
Que acabamos de sembrar. That we just planted.

The child is at the center: It is not primarily specialist music or dance training,
but the enrichment of the whole person through means of expression with
music and dance
The social dimension: The processes of learning, working and creating are
primarily experienced in the group and demand and develop appropriate
behavior and attitudes.
Music as an integral concept: In ancient Greek "Musikè" means singing,
dancing, playing instruments, language but also includes the integrating
proximity to other artistic forms.
The instruments: By providing appropriate instruments that can be experienced
playfully and that do not have technical obstacles. The possibility of artistic
expression with instruments can be included in the work.
The form of teaching as a "process“: The students are creatively involved in the
work process and thereby also determine the direction and the result. In Orff-
Schulwerk the work process and the artistic results have the same importance.
Creativity in improvisation and composition (including dance composition): The
teaching creates opportunities for the student to experience him/herself as a
creator and co-creator.
Adaptability of Orff-Schulwerk: Orff-Schulwerk sees itself as an 'open pedagogy'
that is applicable in its principles in all educational fields of work, and can also
be assimilated in different cultures.

about is the process and how we teach, the ways, tools and strategies. I encourage you
to try it. You will be better and better with practice. Please be very reflective with what
is going on in your classroom. Your students will be the best teachers ever.
And please, try to find or create your own material according to your necessities! Good
