Deadlines of Submission: 11:00 A.M., December 16 at HS Room 6 (For SE 201 A)

The document contains 4 questions related to statistical analyses: 1. Whether a Physics course with lab is more effective than without, based on average grades. 2. Whether the proportion of students changing majors after the first year decreased, based on a sample of students. 3. Whether elementary and high school teachers differed significantly in their reactions to sex education, using a chi-square test. 4. Whether the average grades given by 3 professors teaching Cell Biology differed significantly, using ANOVA.

1. A study was made to determine if the topics in the Physics 21 course are better
understood by the engineering students when a laboratory constitutes part of
the course. Students are allowed to choose between a 3-semester hour course
without laboratory and a 4-semester hour course with laboratories. In the
section with laboratories comprised of 35 students, the average grade of the
students is 2.135 with a standard deviation of 0.098. In the section without
laboratory which is comprised of 41 students, the average grade of the students
is 2.768 with a standard deviation of 0.104. At 0.05 level of significance, can
we conclude that the 4-semester hour course with laboratories is effective?

2. The registrar of a certain small private university claims that 45% of the BSBA
Management students change their major to another area within the College
of Business Education after their first year in the program. A random sample
of 25 students in the BA program revealed that 9 students had changed their
major to economics, marketing or banking and finance. Is there a decrease in
the proportion of students who change their major after their first year in the
program. Test at  = 0.01.

3. Fifty high school teachers and 50 elementary school teachers were asked to
give their reactions towards the inclusion of sex education in the curriculum.
Their reactions are as follows:

Reactions High School Teachers Elementary Teachers

Strongly agree 16 4
Agree 14 6
Mutual 10 10
Disagree 5 15
Strongly disagree 5 15

Is there a significant difference between the reactions of the elementary and

high school teachers regarding this matter? Use  = 0.01.

4. For the past three successive semesters, the Cell Biology course is being taught
by three different professors. The final grades of the students are as follows:
FZ RF RB
5.00 3.00 1.50
2.00 1.75 1.75
5.00 2.25 2.00
3.00 3.00 3.00
3.00 1.50 2.75
5.00 2.00 2.00
5.00 2.75 1.75
5.00 3.00 1.50
5.00 5.00 1.50
3.00 3.00 3.00
2.75 1.75 2.25
5.00 5.00 2.50
2.25 3.00 1.00
5.00 2.25 1.25
5.00 3.00 3.00
5.00 3.00 1.75
2.75 1.75

Is there a significant difference in the average grades given by the three

professors? Use 0.05 level of significance.
