Discussion
Recall: The Rule of Geometric Sequence
Problem: What are the first 5 terms of a geometric sequence whose first term is 2 and whose common
ratio is 5?
Term Other Ways to Write the Terms Geometric
In Factored Form In Exponential Form Sequence
2 2 0
2 x5 ar0
a a xr 0
10 2x5 2 x 51 ar1
50 2x5x5 2 x 52 ar2
250 2x5x5x5 2 x 53 ar3
1250 2x5x5x5x5 2 x 54 ar4
Guide Questions:
Look at the two ways of writing the terms.
1. What does 2 represent?
2. For any two consecutive terms, what does 5 represent?
3. What is the relationship between the exponent of 5 and the position of the term?
4. If the position of the term is n, what must be the exponent of 5?
5. What is an for this sequence?
6. In general, if the first term of a geometric sequence is a1 and the common ratio is r, what is the
nth term of the sequence?
Finding the nth Term:
The Rule for any term is: an = a1 × r(n-1)
Example: 3, 6, 12, 24, 48, 96, 192, …
This sequence has a common ratio of 2 between each term
So, the 4th term is:
a4 = 3×2(4-1) = 3×23 = 3×8 = 24
and the 10th term is:
a10 = 3×2(10-1) = 3×29 = 3 x 512 = 1,536
Finding the Sum of a Geometric Sequence:
a = is the first term
r = is the "common ratio" between terms
n = is the number of terms
Example: 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, …
The values of a, r and n are:
a = 4 (the first term)
r = 2 (the "common ratio")
n = 4 (we want to sum the first 4 terms)
So:
4 1
1 24 1 16 15
4 2 0 4 1 2 = 4 1 4 1 = 60
k 0
Generalization
The Rule to find the nth term of a geometric sequence is: an = a1 × r(n-1). If the geometric
sequence is given, find first the common ratio.
IV. EVALUATION
Direction: In Activity notebook: Find the nth term of the geometric sequence in each item.
1. What is the 6th term of the geometric sequence 2/25, 2/5, 2, 10,…? (250)
2. Find the eighth term of a geometric sequence where the third term is 27 and the common ratio
is 3. (6561)
3. What is the 6th term of the geometric sequence 3/4, 1 1/2, 3, …?
V. ASSIGNMENT
Direction: In Activity notebook:
1. Find the common ratio and the first 5 terms of the following sequence: 1/2, 1, …
2. What is the 6th term of the geometric sequence –7, 14, -28, 56, …?
