Smart Cities Research

Smart cities use internet connectivity and information sharing between communities, businesses, and government to improve services for citizens and optimize resource use. As populations grow and concentrate in cities, issues like traffic and mobility must be addressed through technologies like artificial intelligence, internet of things, and sensors that allow infrastructure and objects to communicate and respond to conditions. The document proposes a solution for smart cities that utilizes AI, IoT, cloud storage, and data collection from citizens, businesses and infrastructure to predict resource needs, optimize resource allocation, and improve traffic and services as populations increase.

Topic: Smart Cities (Information and Communication Technology and Internet of Things)

Introduction:
Smart cities are hyper-connected (wide-spread use of internet connectivity)
cities, which improves life of people through sound and sustainable development. The main
goal is to improve traditional services that are provided to the citizens to make cities more
livable and alive. The communities, businesses, institutes, management sectors, government
departments are connected that shares information which helps in work improvement,
resources utilization, optimizing things and provides supports for economy. With the
advancement in Artificial Intelligence and discovery of Internet of Things, we are able to make
things to act like they can communicate, observe and understand situation and to produce a
quick response against it. The entire city functionality can be manageable. The entire city is
connected, so one thing can communicate and pass information to another. It is easy to find
things that interrupt daily life activities and we can improve security system and safety of
people within the city as well.

Problem Statement:
Cities have their own importance in the development and progress of country.
They are the most active, busy and working part of the country and considered to be the base
of country economy. The numbers of people moving from rural areas to cities are increasing
day by day. By 2050, 70% of world’s population will be living in cities, covering less than 2% of
earth surface. This raises many issues like traffic congestion, mobility, safety etc. As we see the
resources have decreased and amount of traffic have increased by a very large number. These
things are surely affecting the life of people living in cities. As life became fast the
communication process still needs improvement. If we continue to work without exact facts
and figures it will lead us to a dangerous point .This will lead us to challenges in terms of social,
economic and environmental sustainability.

Literature Review:
Some countries are working on projects to achieve goal of smart cities e.g.
India is one of these countries who is currently working on this technology. Other countries
include Spain, UK and China .Examples of smart cities and programs have been implemented in
Dubai while other countries are expecting to launch it by 2020. According to Deakin and Al
Wear, one of the important factors that describe smart cities technology is (ICT) information
and communication technology. It has been suggested that smart city make more efficient use
of physical infrastructure (roads, built environment and other physical assets) through AI. It
engages effectively with local people by use of e-participating. There are number of
technologies that have been implemented under smart city label. For example AI technology
embeds human type intelligence to things and we have seen how a wheel chair can decide
actions by itself. There are examples like Robots who can work like a human being. Another one
is internet of things where things can communicate with other things. But To embed AI on thing
in streets, roads etc. in the entire city along with IOT is yet to be done.

Solution to the Problem Statement:

We utilize development in the field of both ‘Artificial Intelligence’ and
‘Internet of Things’ and implements it in a whole city. The cloud technology will help us in
storing and accessing information. Streets and roads contain sensors for different purposes. For
example, a weather sensor will display the current weather and temperature on the board after
detecting it. There are sensors that find value and respond according to it. For example a
sensor in your car will inform you if you are running out of petrol. As we discuss one of the
technology we use is information and communication technology. We start from very bottom,
an individual, we have a record of each individual and with people we get the data of
businesses, government sectors, management sectors, institutes. We can calculate the
population increasing rate by getting information from data of people that are registered. We
can find how much resources are used on daily basis. Then we are able to predict how much
resources will be left with the increasing population by year 2020. So we are able to predict
future. The objects that we use in daily life for example a street light can full fill other purposes
as well instead of providing light whole night. If we have a sensor connected to it then it would
be able to recognize a person walking near it in darkness so it will turn up the lights for him as
he moves away the light will be switched off again which will save energy. The traffic signal
does not work on a timer but instead it uses sensors to detect the traffic on each side and then
decides whom to let go in order to avoid traffic jams. . People can easily book their
reservations, apartments. They can check the status of shops, markets i.e. open, closed,
changed without visiting it .The can find empty space for parking using GPS. Some areas still
have shortage of electricity problems we will be able to find how much electricity is used by
different areas and how to optimize it so that it can be given to other areas as well. Thus it will
help us to perform well with consistency along with improvement by matching with the
increase in population.
