AS 2050 Take-Home Assignment Due On/before: 4 PM, March 11, 2019

This document contains instructions for a take-home assignment in fluid mechanics. It includes 3 problems involving stream functions, streamlines, and pressure fields for 2D flows, as well as generating the shape of a NACA 3421 airfoil using chordline, camberline, and thickness distribution, and approximating it using 12 panels. Students are asked to solve parts of the problems algebraically and use MATLAB to plot, compute values, and compare approximations to original shapes.

AS

2050* Take-home Assignment Due on/before: 4 PM, March 11, 2019.

1. The stream-function for a steady, 2D flow-field is given by,

= U r sin ✓ + U b✓,

where both U (free stream), and b are constants.

a) Is the flow incompressible?
b) Give an expression for stream-function in Cartesian coordinates.
c) Give the components of velocity in Cartesian and cylindrical polar coordinates.
d) Determine the magnitude and direction of velocity at a distance far away from
the origin.
e) Calculate the circulation value around a circle of radius R centered at the
origin. Also, calculate the vorticity field and check if it contains any singularity.
f) Compute the pressure field and express it in terms of the pressure coefficient.

For the next two parts, assume free-stream to be unity and b = 3.

g) Using MATLAB, plot a few streamlines in the range 0   20 in the region

( 10  x  10, 10  y  10).

h) Using MATLAB, plot a few lines of constant pressure coefficient in the range
5  Cp  0.5 in the region ( 10  x  10, 10  y  10).

2. A stream-function is given as the following:

r4 (a4 b4 ) sin 4✓
= K tan 1 8
r r4 (a4 + b4 ) cos 4✓ + a4 b4

a) Using MATLAB, plot a few streamlines in the domain ⇡4  ✓  ⇡4 .
b) Determine if there are any stagnation points in the flow-field.

c) Show that the lines ✓ = ± 4 represent solid walls.
⇢K 2
d) If the pressure at the origin is p = 10 , where, K, a and b are constants, ⇢
ab
is density, calculate the force per unit span exerted by the flow on the portions
of the walls 0  r  4.

Solve the problem in the algebraic form first, then , to plot the streamlines and
compute the force, use ⇢ = 1 for the density, K = 10, a = 1, b = 3.

3. Consider a NACA 3421 airfoil.

a) Generate the shape of this profile using camberline and thickness distribution
and plot the profile using MATLAB. Show the chordline and camberline in this
plot.

b) Then consider only 12 panels, represent and plot the same airfoil using these
12 panels only. Compare this approximate shape with the original shape plotted
in part a).

(Use chord length as unity).
