SDLP - Engineering Drawing Instrument

This lesson plan outlines a class on engineering drawing instruments. The objectives are for students to be able to identify different instruments, choose the appropriate one for different uses, and create drawings using various materials. The class will involve introducing instruments like T-squares, triangles, and pencils. Students will be divided into groups to present on additional instruments. The lesson aims to teach students the importance of accurate drawings for engineering communication.

SEMI-DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN ENGINEERING DRAWING 1

ENGINEERING DRAWING INSTRUMENT

I. OBJECTIVES

At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:

1. identify the different Engineering Drawing Instrument;

2. choose applicable Engineering Drawing Instrument according to its
use;
3. create Engineering Drawing using different Drawing Materials.

II. SUBJECT MATTER

a. Main Topic : Engineering Drawing 1

b. Sub-topic : Engineering Drawing Instrument
c. Values Integrated : Collaboration, competency and
discipline
d. Instructional Materials : PowerPoint Presentation
e. References : Book: Residential Architecture: Design
and Drafting ;

engineering-drawing-drawing.html

III. LEARNING ACTIVITIES

A. Preparatory Activities
a. Daily Routine
 Greetings
 Classroom Management
 Prayer
 Checking of attendance
 Collecting of assignment
b. Review
 What is Architectural and Engineering Styling?
 What are the different housing styles?
c. Motivation
Human Knot

Directions: Have two groups of 8-10 people stand in a circle

shoulder to shoulder. They all reach their right hand into the
circle and grab someone else’s hand (WHO’S NOT STANDING
NEXT TO THEM)… Then do the same with the left hand-the left
hand must grab someone different than the right hand. Then the
exercise is to get untangled without letting go of one another’s
hands. If you pit two teams against each other and see who can do
it fastest, it quickly builds in some competition. You can have the
groups do it twice. The first time around, have them do the
exercise without speaking. Then let them do it using words. It’s a
great example of communication, team building, and leaders
emerge as well. You can also see who is more strategic in their
thinking and who is more tactical.

B. Developmental Activities

a. Introduction
Engineering drawing is a two dimensional representation of
three dimensional objects. It provides necessary information about
the shape, size, surface quality, material, manufacturing process,
etc., of the object.
Engineering drawing is called the universal language of
engineers. Any language to be communicative should follow
certain rules so that it conveys the same meaning to everyone.
Similarly, drawing practice must follow certain rules, if it is to
serve as a means of communication.

b. Lesson Proper

Role of Engineering Drawing

The ability to read drawing is the most important requirement of
all technical people in any profession. As compared to verbal or
written description, this method is brief and clearer.
Some of the applications are: building drawing for civil engineers,
machine drawing for mechanical engineers, circuit diagrams for
electrical and electronics engineers, computer graphics for one and
all.

Role of Engineering Drawing

To impart the following skills to students.
1. Ability to read and prepare engineering drawings.
2. Ability to make free - hand sketching of objects.
3. Power to imagine, analyze and communicate.

Engineering Drawing Instruments

1. Pencil - Neatness, quality and accuracy of the drawing greatly
depends upon the type and conditions of the pencil used for
drawing.
Mechanical/Refillable Pencils - A refillable pencil is very useful
especially if you are constructing a drawing that needs a constant
thickness of line.
2. T-Square - are used to draw horizontal lines. They are especially
useful when constructing accurate orthographic drawings or
architectural drawings.
3. Triangles - are used to draw accurate angles. The most common
are 45 and 60/30 degrees. When using set squares they should
always use along with a T-Square.
4. Protractor - is used to measure angles. A typical protractor is a
semi- circular piece of plastic with 180 degrees printed around
its curve.
5. Scales - are instruments used in making technical drawings full
size or at a given reduction or enlargement. Types of scales
include metric scales, engineering scales, decimal scales,
mechanical engineering scales and architectural scales.
6. Compass – is an absolute essential piece of equipment. It is well
worth buying a good set which includes at least two compasses
allowing the drawing of small and large circles.
7. French Curves - are purchased in sets of three or four. They
are used to draw curves by finding the section of curve that
matches the desired shape on the profile of the curve.
8. Drawing Sheet - The best drawing sheet has the following
qualities:
a. Light cream buff in colour to have good appearance.
b. Fine grains to pick up the graphite and produce clean,
dense black lines.
c. Strong fibers.
d. Superior erasing qualities.
e. Folding strength
f. Toughness
g. Smooth surface
h. Hard surface
9. Drawing Board - A drawing board is rectangular in shape and is
made of well-seasoned soft wood such as oak or pine. A straight
ebony edge is fitted on the left side on the board against which
the head of the T- square moves.
10. Board Clips /Paper tape - Board clips are used to hold the
drawing paper in position. They simply clip on to the board
holding the paper firmly against the drawing board.
11. Eraser / Eraser Shield – eraser shield allows you to erase without
smearing or the accidental erasure of surrounding areas of a
drawing. An eraser shield is useful when correcting and editing a
drawing.
12. Templates - They are plastic with a number of accurate circles
cut out. They are used to draw circles of set diameters/sizes and
are particularly useful if the circle is small.
13. Flexi-Curve - is used to draw curves. It can be formed
into almost any curve as it is flexible.

c. Application

Class will be divided into 5 groups. Each group leader will present
and discuss their output to the class.

Direction: Each group will think of 2 Drawing Materials that they

encounter that doesn’t we haven’t discuss yet. They will sketch simple
illustration of the instrument and one representative will discuss the
use

d. Generalization

Engineering drawing is the language of engineers and technicians.

The accuracy and neatness of engineering drawing depends on the
quality of the instruments used. With good instruments, the drawing
can be prepared easily, quickly and accurately. Therefore, the
knowledge of different drawing instruments and materials, methods
of using them and the preparatory works to be completed before
commencing the drawing is very important.

IV. EVALUATION
I. True of False
Direction: Write True if the statement is correct and False if the statement
is wrong.
_________1. Eraser shield allows you to erase without smearing or the
accidental erasure of surrounding areas of a drawing. An eraser shield is
useful when correcting and editing a drawing.
_________2. A drawing board is circular in shape and is made of well-
seasoned soft wood such as oak or pine. A straight ebony edge is fitted on
the left side on the board against which the head of the T- square moves.
_________3. A typical protractor is a semi- circular piece of plastic with 180
degrees printed around its curve.
_________4. 6. Compass is an absolute essential piece of equipment. It is
well worth buying a good set which includes at least two compasses allowing
the drawing of small and large circles.
_________5. Templates are plastic with a number of accurate circles cut out.
They are used to draw circles of set diameters/sizes and are particularly
useful if the circle is small.
