Mechatronics History / Origin

1969 in Japan, Tetsura Mori, a senior engineer of Yaskawa

Electric Corp., coined the term “Mechatronics“.
The word ‘Mechatronics’ composed of MECHAnics and
elecTRONICS.
In the 1980s, mechatronics was used to focus on information
technology whereby microprocessors were embedded into
mechanical systems to improve performance, such as antilock
braking and electric seats.
In the 1990s, mechatronics centered on communication
technology to connect products into large networks, including
the production of air bags and other related technologies.

Mechatronics Definition

Mechatronics is the synergistic combination of

precision mechanical engineering, electronic
control and systems thinking in the design of
products and manufacturing processes.

Mechatronics is a methodology used for the

optimal design of electromechanical products.

Mechatronics Simulation & Modeling

Modeling is the process of representing the

behavior of a real system by a collection of
mathematical equations and logic.
Simulation is the process of solving the model
and is performed on a computer.
The process of simulation can be divided into
three sections:
 Initialization
 Iteration
 Termination

Mechatronics System Design, Devdas Shetty & Richard Kolk

Mechatronics Optimization

Optimization solves the problem of distributing

limited resources throughout a system such that
prespecified aspects of its behavior are satisfied.
In mechatronics, optimization is primarily used to
establish the optimal system configuration.

 Resources….Design variables
 System behaviour …… Objectives
 System relationship …..Constraints

Mechatronics Advantages

Cost effective and very good quality product.

 High degree of flexibility.
 Greater extent of machine utilization.
 Capital expenses are reduced.
Owing to the incorporation of intelligent, self
correcting sensory and feedback systems, the
mechatronic approach results in:
 Greater productivity;
 Higher quantity and producing reliability.

A Textbook of Mechatronics, R K Rajput

Mechatronics Disadvantages

High initial cost of the system.

Imperative to have knowledge of different
engineering fields for design and implementation.
Specific problems for various systems will have
to be addressed separately.
It is expensive to incorporate mechatronics
approach to an existing / old system.
