CONCERNS CONNECT

JANUARY - MAY 2019


Dear friends,

Greetings from Concerns Universe Foundation!

We thank God for the provision of the Concerns Community Resource Centre.
The new building was dedicated to serve the community on 14th January 2019.
We shifted our Child Development Center to our new Concerns Community
Resource Centre in February 2019. We value the contribution made by each
one of you for making this endeavour possible. As you read the newsletter, we
hope that you are encouraged by the difference your support is making in the
lives of people.

COMMUNITY COLLEGE UPDATE


The Community College students participated in the Waves
competition held on 2nd February, which was organised by St
Joseph’s College and won seven prizes.

 On 13th February, all the students visited “Home of Hope”, a home for the destitute, to be more
sensitive to the needs of others
 On 18th February 2019, 23 students appeared for the National Skills Development Corporation (NSDC)
exam on the trade “Documentation Assistant” under the Logistics Sector Council and all successfully
completed with ‘A’ grade.
 On 21st February, all the students visited tertiary health care institutions in the city so they could learn
how to utilize the services offered.
 During the month of February, for practical experience, all the students did their internships in schools
and other institutions.
 During February and March 2019, the Bangalore School of Music conducted music classes for the Early
Childhood Care and Education students.

 On 8th March 2019, all the students took part in the sports event organised by the Community
College, all were actively involved and enjoyed the day.
 On 18th March 2019, students conducted their community practical in Jeevanahalli & Janakiram
Layout, where they taught general health concepts and the importance of nutritious food to the
community members.

 During the month of March 2019, students attended workshops on Alcohol Addiction, Capacity
Building, Savings and Insurance, Communication Skills, Career Guidance, Digital Literacy and Mock
Interviews.
 All the students had their final exams in April.
 12th April 2019, was a memorable day for all the students as a beautiful graduation ceremony was
conducted for the 50 students (18- Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE); 11- Office Management;
6- Beauty Culture & Hair Care and 15- Vertical Mobility which is support given towards completing basic
education).

CHILDCARE UPDATE
 On 22nd February 2019 and on 8th March 2019, all the childcare centres conducted sports’ days for the
children.

 During the months of January to March 2019, parents’ meetings were organised on topics such as:
First Aid for childhood injuries, healthy snacks for children and the importance of formal schooling.
For the topic on healthy snacks for children, the ECCE students from Community College demonstrated
low cost healthy snack recipes.
 The total number of children who completed the academic year in the five childcare centres from June
2018 - March 2019 was 181.
 At the end of March 2019, the childcare centres celebrated their annual day program.

 In March 2019, the childcare centres conducted the final assessment for the academic year 2018 - 2019.
There were significant changes observed in children’s physical growth, measured through an increase
in the children’s height & weight. The assessment also indicated that the children had developed better
reading and writing skills. The children were able to recite rhymes, do creative and fine motor activities
and actively participate in gross motor activities compared to their early assessment scores.

COMPUTERS & COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM


 On 17th January 2019, Dheivanayagi and Malleshwari attended the training conducted by Vitamin
Angel. The training was on administering Vitamin A and deworming tablets.
 On 26th January 2019, CUF organised a health awareness session for community members in the new
Community Resource centre. The resource persons were from the SDA Community Health Team. The
topic was the prevention of diseases by using locally available nutritious food.

 On 2nd March 2019, Ms Alex Miller from the USA trained the community staff on Asset Based
Community Development.
 From 28th – 30th March 2019, Quest Alliance conducted training on digital literacy for the CUF team
and some of the Community College students.
 From January to March 2019, CUF staff conducted digital literacy sessions in different urban
communities.

 Through the Microsoft computer literacy program, 191 students who completed the program
received certificates from Microsoft.

 During the months of April & May 2019, weeklong summer camps and computer boot camps were
organised for the children in the communities surrounding childcare centres in R.S Palaya and M.V.
Garden. 151 students attended the summer camp and 57 students attended the computer boot camp.

EXTRA CURRICULA ACTIVITIES FOR THE COMMUNITY STUDENTS
On 16th February 2019, Concern India Foundation organised Inter-NGO sports. Students in different Concerns
Universe Foundation (CUF) programs participated.

CUF MANAGEMENT UPDATE


 From 30th January – 6th February 2019, Catriona and John, representatives of India Share visited CUF.
They encouraged the staff as well as gave suggestions to improve the programs.
 On 26th January 2019, at the Chennai office of the Indian Centre for Research and Development of
Community Education (ICRDCE), Chitra presented the work of Concerns Community College to the team
from Georgetown University, USA.
 On 8th and 9th February 2019, the community staff went on a staff trip to Chennai. For some staff, it
was the first time they were going out of Bangalore. The staff enjoyed themselves and it was a time of
team building.
 On 8th February 2019, members getting leadership training by Common Purpose, were addressed by
Ms. Sangeetha and visited the local community as part of an exposure visit.
 On 12th March, Sangeetha was a resource person to train the Bangalore Community College students
for the NSDC logistics exam.

From 13th May -24th May 2019, Chitra was part of a team of trainers
involved in training teachers and community workers on Life Coping
Skills in Batticola and Jaffna in Srilanka, which was organised by
ICRDCE and supported by the United Board for Christian Higher
Education, Hong Kong.
