Assignment 3: Individual Written Report: o o o o

You’ve looked at material balancing over different types of process units, and have begun to look at energy balancing, but a major part of chemical engineering design is to look at processes as a whole. In gaining an understanding of a specific process, it is hoped that you will become familiar with the types of units that are employed for different operations, the sizes of such units and the conditions at which they are operated.

Assignment 3: Individual written report

Introduction

You’ve looked at material balancing over different types of process units, and have begun to look at energy balancing, but a
major part of chemical engineering design is to look at processes as a whole. In gaining an understanding of a specific process, it
is hoped that you will become familiar with the types of units that are employed for different operations, the sizes of such units
and the conditions at which they are operated.

Brief

For this assignment you will be given a process about which you should do some research and write a report. You should
describe:

 The raw materials that are used.

 The main process steps that are employed, including a description of specific units, e.g. reactor, separator.
o Include a process flow diagram
o Include any relevant chemistry for any reaction steps
o Define process parameters (temperatures/pressures/etc) and explain these operational conditions.
o Give a sensible estimate of plant throughputs.
 The products that are obtained, including any by-products and effluents/wastes, including their forms.
 Services required, e.g. water, energy such as electricity/gas, steam, others.
 The methods by which the wastes are disposed and any emissions/discharge limits that must be adhered to.
 Concepts that must be considered before the underlying chemistry/engineering can be applied on an industrial scale.
 If relevant, the major drivers to selection of particular units (product purity, cost, speed of production, etc)

Sources

I am aware that online sources are very easily accessed and that there is a great deal of excellent information on the internet,
but please decide whether the sources that you find are credible. Do NOT reference Wikipedia, wikihow, ehow, howstuffworks,
etc, etc. Find more suitable sources from which to get your information.

The Kirk-Othmer Encyclopaedia, Coulson and Richardson series (especially volume 6), Perry’s Chemical Engineering handbook,
etc, are excellent general sources, and much good information can be found via Web of Science and the Knovel database
amongst others.

Cite your sources using either the Harvard or Vancouver systems, but be consistent with the system that you choose, bearing in
mind that the Harvard system would immediately allow me to judge the age of the source without flicking to the references
section.

Please take previous feedback on board. Guidelines on referencing can be found on Canvas along with notes on report writing:

Submission

This report should be a maximum of 6 pages in length which does NOT include a title page or references. You may put your
st
summary on the title page and begin the 1 page with a table of contents. The main report text may begin underneath the table
of contents. The report should be:

 Arial font
 Minimum 11pt text size
 Minimum 2 cm margins
st
This report should be submitted to the relevant Canvas assignment by 1 pm on Thursday 21 January 2016, with a hard copy
to the Chemical Engineering reception.

It’s difficult for me to track the subject of the report that you wrote for your tutors. If yours was similar to the one that you have
been assigned, please let me know and I will assign you another subject.
