ST - Michael'S Highschool Tangub City: in Partial Fulfillment of The Requirements in Practical Research 1

This document provides an introduction, literature review, and methodology for a study about student absenteeism at St. Michael's High School in Tangub City, Philippines. The study aims to identify the causes of absenteeism among 10th grade students in one class and provide suggestions to minimize it. A survey will be administered to 20 students to gather both qualitative and quantitative data on absenteeism factors and their effects on academic performance. Results will be analyzed using percentages to identify causes and inform solutions.

CHAPTER I
A. Introduction

Education is very important to every individual because it is way in order to reach the
bright future. It aims to give knowledge or information to the students for their future.
This serves as mechanism that molds the mind of individuals.

Education is not that easy, there are challenges that inevitable for students and becomes
their hindrance to commit what they want to reach and one of the challenges is the
absenteeism of students.

Absenteeism according to N. Crespo and the company in their book it has been defined as
the conscious and deliberated action of been away from the physical and classroom
conditioned for some factors that influence the search of alternatives to the use of time. A
term generally used to refer unscheduled absences of students from the school. But
students sometimes prefer to absent just to skip from their classes and to their school
works, duties, assignment, and rules. A pattern in missing school works in which they are
habitually and frequently doing it but not just students but also teachers sometimes.
Absenteeism does not include excused absences where students have a permission to
escape from class.

Absence nowadays cannot be separated from the individual called students. This absence
of phenomena, it is easy to see even likened it has become a necessity in the nature of
students. So it is not surprising if this habits continues to fall proceeds among school
students as example of primary, secondary and even at the university level, the problem
still persists.
B. Statement of the problem
This study is about the problem of the students in St. Michael’s High School that is
absenteeism.
This is made to give students an information about the topic will going to study.

The questions that are expected to answer are the following;

1. What are the causes of absenteeism of students in class?

2. What are the effects of absenteeism in students who absents in class?

C. Purpose of the Study

The researchers are expected to achieve the following objectives;

1. To study the possible factor that affect of students absenteeism..

2. To give importance of educations to student.
3. To give suggestions and solutions in minimizing absenteeism.

D. Significance of the study

The importance of this study is to get accurate information about the causes of
absenteeism of students. These reviews of research not only help researchers and
educators identify the contemporary research topics and research methology but also
suggest directions for future research as well as some guidelines for the nature of that
research. In addition, to study and rises information of factor and effect student
absenteeism.

This study could help the following:

For Students. This study serves as the bases for students if what are the possible effect of
it to their studies and the possible solution of this problem. This study will help student to
open their minds about the reality that absenteeism is not good to make it as a habit.

For Teacher. This study will help the teachers to make a way to encourage the student to
be present in class. Trough the result of this study, the teachers can to understand the
students.

For Parents. Through this study, the parent will be aware that absenteeism in class is not
good to their children. This study serves as their guide in order to discipline their children
appropriately.
E. Scope and Delimitation of the study

The researcher chose one section of the Grade 10 students enrolled in the school year
2017-2018 at St. Michael’s High School in Tangub City, as the respondents of the study.
Only 20 students were used as respondents of the study.

One delimitation is that the study focus one community. For example, the study
concentrates on high school students attendance, effectiveness of Saturday redemptive
school, and perception of high school students, parents, and teachers because the school
division decided to allocate and reallocate a majority of the attendance resources and
funding from the elementary and middle school attendance program to the high school
attendance program.

An additional delimitation is that the study is limited to the evaluation and

implementation of the attendance and program after one year of implementation.
CHAPTER II

REVIEW RELATED LITERATURE

According to ( Teasly,2004) absenteeism is a period of time when a student does not

attend school, students who do not attend school will generally fall when their classmates
in their academic success (Ford and Sutphen,1996) they have fewer opportunity to learn
the materials that will help them to succeed (Epstein and Sheldon,2002) the focus of
students absenteeism ranges from early schooling until adolescent years (Ford and
Sutphen, 1996).

Predictors of absenteeism and truancy can be found inside and outside of the school
environment. Bimler and Kirkland (2001), they indicated that there may be as many as
10 different ‘hot spots’ that can predict student absenteeism and truancy. These ‘hot
spots’ broadly include: school conditions; home-based behavioral issues; psychological
issues; family background; school-based behavioral issues; peer issues; as well as lack of
motivation or interest in school.

Absenteeism in students affects their school performances especially when they are in a
group of teamwork for their assignments and projects. Since grouping will help develops
the students cooperative and ability to share and gain knowledge from their group mates,
likewise, the group mates will also miss the opportunity gaining knowledge from the
absent students (Koppenhaver, 2003). .
CHARTER III

A. Research Design
The informative survey was chosen as the design for this study. This design takes into
account both qualitative and quantitative data collection strategies. “ Not only is it
perfectly possible to combine approaches within the same piece of research, but it is
often advantageous to do so” ( Saunders et al 2003 ).
The researcher tried to determine the reaction of the students in Grade 10, St. Therese
in St. Michael’s High School that are usually absent in class.

B. Research Locale
The researcher conducted the study in a private school found in Tangub City,
Misamis Occidental at St, Michael’s High School.

C. Research Respondents
The chosen respondents in this study are the 20 students in St. Michael’s High School
Grade 10, St. Therese.

D. Instrument of the study

The researcher gathered information using the different instrument. The researcher
prepared questionnaires that involve the possible reaction of the respondents about
absenteeism in class.
The researcher also gathered information in different sources such as book and
journal and the researcher also got information from internet.

E. Data Collection Procedure

The researcher will be distributed the instrument to the respondents. Then gathered
data from questionnaire were tallied, tabulated. Analyzed, and interpreted
statistically.

F. Data Analysis Procedure

To quantify the gathered data and state the result of the study, the researcher uses
statistical tools which are a percentage. This tool will be used to measure the ratio of
respondent’s test score and the total number of test items. The formula is,
𝑚
P= 𝑛 x 100%
