“The Cask of Amontillado” Reflection Paper

I’ve heard of Edgar Allan Poe before, but am not sure if I’ve ever read any of his works.
When I read his story, immediately the tone of the story was set and the goal was clear. It must
be Mr. Poe’s style and way of writing, and indeed from this story I saw why he is known for his
horrifying and macabre stories.
The story doesn’t dilly dally, it gets to the point quick but understandably. Anger and
revenge were the main character’s reason for murder. A close and longtime friend has hurt him
multiple times and when Fortunato disrespected Montresor’s family, it was the last straw. I think
it wasn’t that Fortunato’s last-mentioned offense was so terrible, but that Montresor’s anger got
bottled up and that’s why he decided to kill Fortunato. I don’t agree on revenge. I don’t agree on
murder. Even if it’s someone bad, someone who wronged you or others. I think we have no right
over other people’s lives. If out of self-defense for your life or another’s, and you have no other
choice, then I think yes. But if we want payment for what is done to us then it should be under
the law and I agree that if wronged and payment must be given then it should be, but never a life.
And punishment must be given but justice should be under the law. People should be allowed to
have the chance to change and hopefully even come to know Jesus and what He’s done for us.
Montresor repeatedly ‘gave’ Fortunato the chance to get away. But Fortunato’s pride and
weaknesses wouldn’t let him go. However, I think Montresor just made himself think hat he is
giving Fortunato the chance, so that in his mind it was also Fortunato’s own decisions that lead to
his death. Trying to make himself less guilty like in the last lines, he said he felt his heart grew
sick, and he says it must be because of the cold after he heard Fortunato’s fearful cry, after he
basically committed murder. By putting the reader in Montresor’s point of view, we are
prompted to somehow sympathize with the character, and “be with him” since he is the one
telling the story. It may fly over the readers head that Montresor murdered someone, and I think
cruelly, and that’s wrong. And Fortunato is portrayed by the speaker, Montresor, as someone who
should be hated. A drunkard, prideful, terrible friend and human being. The world is full of these
kinds of people, a lot of them even worse than Fortunato. Should we just kill them? I’ve met
some Fortunato’s in my life. Most of them a relative, someone close to the family. But even
though they hurt us, wronged us for years. My family still tried. We did are best to follow God
and love them even though hate or anger would erupt sometimes. And after all these years I can
say it resulted in good. And I feel peace in knowing there was forgiveness and gratitude even at
the last moments, as opposed to hatred and revenge or fearful cries behind a wall. We never
know if Montresor ever tried to talk with Fortunato, or just stay away from him. I know it can be
hard but surely not as hard as committing murder, right? But humans can be clouded with anger
and other bad things and make them do wrong. Montresor had chosen to do wrong than to keep
calm and act right. Doing the right thing, most often always requires a person to not stay silent.
Overall the story was a good piece of horror. I liked that it was direct and that it dealt with a very
real situation. The imagery was good too. It as simple but good, and was elaborated well even for
a short story. It may even better than longer stories out there.
