Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence is the simulation of human intelligence by machines. It became a concept in the 1950s starting with Alan Turing's proposal that machines can think. Major fields of AI include knowledge representation, automated planning, machine learning, natural language processing, computer vision, and the goal of artificial general intelligence. AI has many benefits like precision and ability to work in risky environments but also risks like job displacement and expensive implementation. Modern uses of AI include manufacturing, healthcare, banking, automobiles, and smartphones. The future of AI is uncertain but rapidly developing.

What is Artificial Intelligence?

The simulation of the ability to learn and make rational

decisions, by machines.
History Of Artificial Intelligence…
The concept of A.I. really became relevant in the 1950’s.

 1950: Alan Turing published “Computing Machinery and Intelligence,”

which proposed the idea that machines can think. This proposal later
became The Turing Test, which measured machine (artificial) intelligence.
 1956: John McCarthy and a team of men created a proposal for a
workshop on “artificial intelligence.” In 1956 when the workshop took
place, the official birth of the word was attributed to McCarthy.
Fields Of Artificial Intelligence…
 Knowledge Representation and Reasoning
Knowledge representation and reasoning, also known as KR&R or KR,
is a specific field which focuses on designing computer representations
that can process information about the world to solve complex
problems.

 Automated Planning and Scheduling

This field is concerned with the automated generation of action
sequences that correspond to strategies that can be executed by an AI
system such as unmanned vehicles or autonomous robots.
 Machine Learning

Machine learning is both a specific field of artificial intelligence

and an actual application of AI. As a field of discipline, it involves
the study of algorithms and statistical models that computer
systems use to perform a specific task without using explicit
instructions effectively.
 Natural Language Processing

Another major goal and subset of artificial intelligence is natural

language processing or NLP. It deals with the analysis and
generation of languages that humans use naturally to interface
with computers. In other words, NLP is about human-computer
interaction using natural language instead of computer language.

 Computer Vision

Computer vision involves acquiring and understanding visual

data from still or moving digital images or live images from the
real world to process them in a manner that AI systems can utilize
to make decisions.
 Artificial General Intelligence

The utmost and long-term goal of artificial intelligence as a field

is artificial general intelligence or AGI. By definition, AGI
demonstrates the capability of an AI system to perform any
intellectual task that a human can perform.
Pros and Cons of A.I.
Pros Cons

 Less room for errors  Dependency on machines

 Precise decision making  Expensive implementation
 Can work in risky situations  Displacement of low skilled jobs
 Can work continuously  Tedious training algorithms
Modern Day Implementations
Manufacturing Healthcare
A.I. is vastly used in manufacturing Doctors are using A.I. to assist
industries for faster and better them in diagnosis and treatment
outputs. procedures.
Banking & Finance Automobiles
A.I. systems are now used to Google’s driverless cars and
analyze market data, predict Tesla’s Autopilot have already
trends and to manage finance. introduced A.I. to automobiles.
“Smart” phones
Virtual personal assistants like Siri, Cortana and
Google assistant are some of the most common
implementations of A.I. in smart phones which
make them actually “smart”.
Conclusion
Artificial intelligence is probably one of the most exciting and rapidly
growing fields of technology. But there are a few concerns related to its
future like the term known as “super intelligence” which means that a
machine can one day surpass the levels of human intelligence.

As stated by Stephen Hawking – “In the future, the will of the machines
may conflict our own.” Where do we want to take this technology is in our
hands now.
