2. Insights (What new insights or learning did you gain in discussion/ activity?)
i. Before reading the article, I thought that the three integration grouping that
were analyzed in the article do not encounter problems when it comes with
integration processes. However, reading the article, I now realize that all of
them despite being well-established, encounter problems as well. The EU’s
problem are the two-speed integration process and the serious negative
consequences of the global financial crisis for the socio-economic cohesion
of the EU-28. The conflict between political will for deepening integration
among member states and the real economic possibility of achieving higher
stages of integration seems to be the problem of ASEAN. On the other hand,
members of the NAFTA don’t give importance in integration processes and
they differ in terms with their development level.
ii. Before reading the article, I thought that countries can all the way to start the
process of integration without any other conditions. However, reading the
article, I now realize that there are pre-conditions needed to be kept in mind
of countries who would start this process. One major pre-condition is that a
country must possess the fundamentals of their economy, must be
competitive, and has the ability to stand up to consequences of restructuring
processes.
iii. Before reading the article, I thought that free trade is just some sort of trading
goods with other countries without any tariffs that puts the two countries
involved in a win-win situation. However, reading the article, I now realize that
free trade can also affect a country negatively. The NAFTA is an integration
group composed of three countries along with a developing economy. The
global crisis which is a flaw of free trade affect the foreign trade and the
investment flows of the NAFTA.
iv. Before reading the article, I thought that international institutions don’t have
much to do with the improvements and developments of other international
institutions. However, reading the article, I now realize that international
institutions that interacts with each other can both benefit at the same time.
As well, one international institution can greatly influence the development
and the performance of another international institution.
v. Before reading the article, I thought that behavioral interaction doesn’t help
much on the interaction of international institutions. However, reading the
article, I now realize that behavioral interaction is one of the types of causal
mechanism. It is located at the final output level and hugely influences a
target institution. In addition to this, behavioral interaction does not depend
on a collective decision within the target institution.
3. Questions (What questions would you want answers for? Or vague areas you
want more explanations about?
i. I want to have more explanation on the reasons why the three integration
groups that were analyzed encounter such problems.
ii. How can I deeply study the causal relationships between international
institutions involved in interaction?
iii. Is there a possibility that an international institution can negatively affect
its target institution?
