Introduction to Electrical and Electronics Circuits

EE 101 (Slot – 4)

Assignment – 1

Due Date: 13/Aug/2019 Marks: 100

Q1. Two positive point charges i.e. q and 4q are kept on the x-axis at x=0 and x=L
respectively. A third charge is placed on the x-axis. Determine its (third charge) magnitude
and position on x-axis such that the net force on first and third charges are zero. (10 Marks)
Q2. Two very long lines of charges with positive linear charge density (λ), are placed parallel
to each other and separated by distance x. [Note: Use Gauss’s law to solve this problem]
(5+5 Marks)
(a) What is the magnitude of the electric field at a distance x/3 from one of the charged lines
(2x/3 from the other line).
(b) What is the magnitude of the electric field at a distance x/3 from the positive line of
charge if the charge on the other line (at distance x) is negative.
Q3. A long (infinitely) straight wire carries a current of ‘Io’ A, as shown in Fig. 1. A
rectangular loop of length ‘a’ and breadth ‘b’ is located at a distance ‘R’ on the right side of
the wire (as shown in the figure) such that the current carrying wire lies in the plane of the
loop. Assume, I << Io.
What are the magnitude and direction of the net force on the loop if the loop carries a current
‘I’? (10 Marks)

Q4. For the circuit shown in Fig. 2, using KVL and KCL solve the following:
a) Find the current through each resistor. (5+5+5 Marks)
b) The voltage of the battery is ‘x’ volts. Find x.
c) Determine the power delivered by the battery of 20V.
