UR15 Introduction

A. Introduction
A
~
I DANGER!
To ensure maximum safety, servicemen and operators must read the A.2 "Safety
precautions" section before starting installation , maintenance and adjustment of
the device or before starting to operate it.

A. 1 General description

A .1.1 Description
The UR15 circuit-breaker is a DC high-speed current-limiting circuit-breaker, air cooled. lt has
0 been designed to ensure a trip free, rapid opening of its main contact, on detection of a short-
circuit, and to quickly extinguish the arc by generating a constant over-voltage during the whole
interruption process.
The circuit-breaker is made of independent mounted sub-assemblies, corresponding to the
different functions.

0 01 521
1. Fixed insulating frame made of glass-fibre reinforced insulating material.
2. Main circuit, consisting of a lower connection terminal (21 ), a moving contact (22), an upper
connection terminal (23), a fixed contact with horn (24) and another horn (25).
3. Over-current release.
4. Arc chute.
5. Closing device and fork.
6. Auxiliary contacts assembly.

A.1.2 Uses of the high speed circuit-breaker

Because of its short response time following the detection of an excess current (short-circuit,
overload detection .. .), it is particularly suitable for the protection of the electrical equipment in
rolling stock used on DC lines.

Introduction UR15

A.1.3 Main features

• high insulation level to earth
• high breaki ng capacity
• unaffected by climatic conditions
long service life
• simple maintenance
• small dimensions

A.1.4 Functions
Closing
When a closing pulse is received, the closing device (1) moves the fork (2), which closes the
moving contact (3) and applies the contact pressure to the main contacts (3 & 9). The guide (4),
linked to the moving contact (3), actu ates the auxiliary contacts (5). The closing shock is damped
by the shock absorbers (6).

Holding 0
Once the main contact is closed, the contact pressure is maintained by the closing device (1 ),
either with a reduced holding current (E type) or without current (M type) .

Opening
The circuit-breaker opens either through an over-current tripping or through an appropriate
opening order:
• An over-current, that exceeds the maximum current setting value, lifts the core (8) and causes
the lever (7) to push the fork (2) downward, thus releasing the moving contact (3). See
§ 8 .2. 1 "Operation" for details.
• An opening remote order given to the circuit-breaker cuts off the holding current (E type) or
applies a reverse pulse (M type), which moves the fork (2) toward the closing device (1).
The spring (15) then opens th e moving contact (3) and the guide (4) actuates the auxiliary
contacts (5). The opening shock is damped by the shock absorber (14).
The arc that is generated between the main contacts (3 & 9) moves upwards between the
horns (11 ) into the arc chute (10) and is split by the baffles (12) . The ionized gases are mostly
neutralised by the de-ionizing plates (13).

A.2 Safety precautions

A.2.1 General precautions

DANGER!
High voltage electricity can kill or cause serious injury.
All inspection, maintenance and installation operations carried out on the circuit-
breaker must be performed with the power off and the circuit-breaker earthed .
The main collector must be disconnected (pantograph lowered).
Some controls require the use of low voltage (DC) electrical supply. Follow the
safety requirements in force to carry out these operations.
Never touch the circuit-breaker before the high voltage circuit is neutralized and the
plant is properly earthed.
When performing installation, inspections and maintenance, keep your hands away
from moving parts during the opening and closing operations of the circuit-breaker.
Do not attempt to service the internal parts without the presence of another person
who is trained in first aid.
0
Modifying, removing, deactivating or otherwise changing components in any way
may affect the safety of the device. Not using parts from the original manufacturer
can affect the performance and safety of the device and automatically waives
Secheron 's warranty.
A circuit-breaker that appears to be damaged or defective should be disconnected
or made inoperative and secured against unintended operation until they can be
repaired by qualified personnel .
When isolating electrical equipment, the following five safety rules have to be
observed: disconnect from the power supply I take the necessary means to prevent
reclosing of the isolating switches I test absence of voltage by approved means I
ensure earthing and short-circuiting by approved means I protect adjacent live
parts by covers and barriers and fit a suitable warning notice.

A.2.2 Safety requirements for the installation

of electric equipment connected to a Secheron's circuit-breaker mounted on a vehicle.
When mounting electrical equipment inside a vehicle, the consequences of an eventual fault in
the circuit breaking of the Secheron's circuit-breaker must absolutely be taken into account.
0
All the necessary precautions must be taken in order to ensure the safety of the people inside
(and/or outside) the vehicle if such a fault happens. Secheron declines any res ponsibility in the
case of non respect of the local standard s about fire and electrical protections.

A.2.3
A
....
I Precaution during train operation

WARNING!
When a circuit-breaker trips, never re-close it more than one time in a row. If the
circuit-breaker re-opens after a first re-closing, deep investigation must be
performed to find and remedy the cause of the tripping .

8.2 Over-current release

8.2.1 Operation
When excess current flows through the main circuit, it creates a magnetic field in the tripping
device (11), inducing (12) an upwards movement of its moving magnet (13). This movement
trigger the lever (14) and presses the fork (15) downwards (16), releasing (10) the moving
contact (17).
Important!
When the circuit-breaker trips following an over-current, the fork (15) remains in
closed position and needs to be reset (18) to its open position by giving an "OFF"
order to the closing coil.

8 .2.2 Scale setting

A label (2) shows the correspondence between the current trip setting values and the graduated
scale (3), This correspondence is determined during the routine test and is specific for each
breaker; it can not be used for another breaker.

8 .3 Breaker control
The circuit-breaker can be maintained in the closed position using either a reduced holding
current (E type) or without current (M type).
Note! Secheron recommends the protection of the closing device coil using an automatic circu it-
breaker with thermal protection, w hich have the following characteristics: a closing pulse duration
of 0.5-1 second, the ability to trigger the circuit-breaker several times consecutively and a holding
current that is limited to 5% of the closing current.
Important!
AI A longer closing pulse may burn the coil.

Electric holding: E type

A. Start of the closing pulse: the contacts F + G close.
B. Closing pulse: 0.5 to 1 s.
C. Start of the holding current: the contact G opens.
D. Holding: an R1 resistance limits the holding current to 5% of the closing current.
E. Opening: the contact F opens to provoke the interruption of the holding current.

Outdoor installation
The circuit-breaker is installed in a closed insulating box on the roof of the vehicle or suspended
beneath it.

C.8.1 Prerequisites for the supports

Because of its high chemicals, mechanical and electric insulation properties, the material of the
UR15 frame (8) is rigid; then excessive mechanical stress on it must be avoided by applying both
following rules:
Important!
AI The frame (8) could break if these two prerequisites are not fulfilled.

1. The supports (9) must be manufactured in a way that the UR15 frame never touch them
outside the surfaces (11) of the four fixing points.
In case this prerequisite is not respected by the supports (9), 020 x 09 x 1.5 mm flat washers
(10) can be inserted between the UR15 frame (8) and the supports (9).

01622
2. The maximum deviation (12) of the flatness between the four fixing points (red zones 11) of
the supports (9) must not exceed 0.5 mm.

C.10 Main connections

The main connections are established by cables or bars.
Refer to the international standards for the cables or bars cross-sections, according to your appli-
cation. An overview of the applicable standards concerning the cross-sections is given below.

C.10.1 Recommended dimensions of the bars/cables

Important!
When connecting with bars, avoid
creating mechanical stresses in t he
connections (1) by installing the first bar
support (2) not farther than 400 mm from
the connections (1 ).

Contact area
Secheron recommends a minimal contact surface of 1.4 A/mm 2 between each main connection
0
and the cables or bars.

Cross-section for rolling stock purposes

Two different standards must be considered when connecting a circuit-breaker (HSCB):
IEC/EN 60943 "Guide for specification of permissible temperature and temperature rise for
parts of electrical equipment, especially for the main connections", which is dependant of the
standard IEC60077 "Railway applications- Electric equipment for rolling stock".
EN50343 "Railway application- Rolling stock- Rules for installation of cabling".

I l:ctll§l ~II:S•I!IIC I
I HSCB I
--------~,,4----~-2-m--~~~--~-2--m---T•.,, ------------- ~--~~~-.

00712

The cables/bars connected directly to the circuit-breaker must comply with the standard IEC/EN
0
60943. The length of these bars/cables must be at least of 2 meters before and after the main
connection s of th e circuit-breaker.
The cabling of the installation behind these 2 meters must comply with the standard EN50343.
Thus the cross-section of the cables/bars can be different in these two sections of the circuit.

Secheron recommends a current density not exceeding 1.7-2.0 A/mm 2 for the high voltage
cables/bars connected to the circuit-breaker and related to therms current of the application .
For current density exceeding this recommended value, the thermal current of the circuit-breaker
must be derated in fu nction of the application.

Cross-section for industry purposes

The bars/cables connected to the circuit-breaker must comply with the § 8.3.3.3.4 and the tables
9, 10 and 11 of the standard 6094 7-1 "Low-voltage switchgear and controlgear - Part 1: General
rules".

C.12 Over-current release

C.12.1 Maximum current release (Id) setting

The over-current release is calibrated at the factory and adjusted either to the value requested by
the customer when ord ering, or to the lowest value of the tri pping range (in that case, you need
to set the tripping threshold (Id) to the required current value) .
A label (2) shows the correspondence between the current values and the graduated scale (3),
This correspondence is determined during the routine test and is specific for each breaker; it can
not be used for another breaker.

Setting procedure
a) Loosen the screw (6).
b) Loosen the knob (4) until the mark (5) reaches minimum value on the scale (3).
c) Then tighten th e knob (4) until the mark (5) coincides with the number on the table (2), corre-
sponding to the selected current value (Id).

C.1 4 Security check advised during operation

The customer should permanently verify that th e voltage/current information coming from a
voltage/current detector corresponds to the information about the state of the circuit-breaker
given by its auxiliary contacts (1 ). according to the complete electrical circuit.
For example, if the information coming from the auxiliary contacts of the circuit-breaker shows
th at the circuit-breaker is open and the voltage transformer detect a voltage, this indicates a
serious problem which must be immediately solved.
WARNING!
Never run a vehicle if the information coming from the auxiliary contacts (1) and a
voltage/current detector is contradictory!

0.5.3 Final test 0

Before putting the circuit-breaker back into service, it is recommended to perform the following
tests. Refer also to § C.13.
For th ese tests, the main connections must be disconnected, and the supply voltage must be
provided by an adjustable vol tage source.
CAUTION! risk of crushing!
The moving contact will move rapidly, keep your fingers away when performing the
following tasks!
Important!
Operate the circuit-breaker to test it WITHOUT connecting it to the high voltage
circuit.
i) Connect the closing coil to the power supply adjusted at 70% of the nominal voltage (minimal
voltage). Perform 10 closing/opening cycles (see§ B.3.1 for coil voltage values).
j) Close the circuit-breaker.
k) With a 1-JOhm-meter adjusted at 1OA, measure the total resistance between upper (64) and
lower (15) connections. If the measured value is over 651-JO, either:
- if it has not be done in § 0 .5.2, clean the moving and fixed contact tips (68) with an abra-
sive rubber; then remove all the rubber residues with pressurised air and a cloth. Perform
again 10 closing/opening cycles and repeat the measurement.
0
- change the main contacts according to § 0 .6.
I) Check the opening capability:
- For the E type: slowly reduce the voltage and note the value at which the circuit-breaker
opens. This value must be lower than 3.5% of the nominal voltage.
- For M type: close the circuit breaker; unhook the fork by pushing it down with a small
screwdriver; the moving contact opens and the closing device remains in holding posi-
tion; apply 14% of the nominal voltage in reverse polarity during 0.5s and check that the
fork (7) moves (8) to the rest position.
m) Close the circuit-breaker.
In order to check that the moving contact (6) opens rapidly, unhook the fork (7) by pushing it
down with a small screwdriver. Check the opening of the moving contact. Check also with a
screwdriver that the up/down move of the fork can be done without friction. Then , transmit an
"off' order to check that the fork (7) moves (8) to the rest position.
n) Manually check that the lever (1) moves freely.

o) Check the set point of the maximum current release (Id): the indicator (2) should be on the
required value and the screw (3) tightened .
p) Check the tightening torque of all screws and nuts: in order to check them, look at their red
marks (65) which must be aligned, not divided (66); if this mark is divided (66), re-tighten the
screw according to the§ H. Simultaneously check the presence of all necessary washers.
q) If not yet done, lightly grease the shock absorbers (19), the slot (5) and the fork (6) with
Rhodina LT2 grease.
r) Reassemble the arc chute.
s) Check the general appearance (cracks, cleanliness, etc.); please contact Secheron for any
defect that can not be safely corrected.
If all tests are full filled, the circuit-breaker is operational.

~
A I Important!
Never operate the circuit-breaker under electric load without the arc chute fitted.

A I DANGER!
To ensure maximum safety, servicemen and operators must read the A.2 Safety
precautions section before starting installation, maintenance and adjustment of the
device or before starting to operate it.
Note! Each screw/nut need to be tightened to a specific torque; refer to the chapter H. to find theirs
correct tightening torques.

G.1 Indirect release BIM 1

Attached to the closing device (1) and the main circuit frame (2), the indirect release reduces the
mechanical opening time of the circuit-breaker when required by specific applications.
The circuit-breaker can be remotely opened by a pulse sent to the coil (3), which rotates the
lever (4), thereby lowering the fork (5) and opening the moving contact (6).
This device can also be manually (7) activated.
Important!
When the circuit-breaker trips following an indirect release, the fork (15) remains in
closed position and need to be reset (18) to its open position by giving an " OFF"
order to t he closing coil.

H. Tightening torques
H.1 General procedure

Each screw/nut needs to be tightened to a specific torque; this chapter shows theirs correct tight-
ening torques. Put a new elastic washer each time one has been loosened .
For the purpose of checking the tightening of all screws and nuts, paint
a red line (1) from the screw/nut (2) onto the parts (3) after having tight-
ened any screw/nut to the requested torque.

H.2 Standard tightening torques

Unless specially indicated in § H.3, use these values for greased stainless steel bolts.
