I DANGER!
To ensure maximum safety, servicemen and operators must read the A.2 "Safety
precautions" section before starting installation , maintenance and adjustment of
the device or before starting to operate it.
A. 1 General description
A .1.1 Description
The UR15 circuit-breaker is a DC high-speed current-limiting circuit-breaker, air cooled. lt has
0 been designed to ensure a trip free, rapid opening of its main contact, on detection of a short-
circuit, and to quickly extinguish the arc by generating a constant over-voltage during the whole
interruption process.
The circuit-breaker is made of independent mounted sub-assemblies, corresponding to the
different functions.
0 01 521
1. Fixed insulating frame made of glass-fibre reinforced insulating material.
2. Main circuit, consisting of a lower connection terminal (21 ), a moving contact (22), an upper
connection terminal (23), a fixed contact with horn (24) and another horn (25).
3. Over-current release.
4. Arc chute.
5. Closing device and fork.
6. Auxiliary contacts assembly.
A.1.4 Functions
Closing
When a closing pulse is received, the closing device (1) moves the fork (2), which closes the
moving contact (3) and applies the contact pressure to the main contacts (3 & 9). The guide (4),
linked to the moving contact (3), actu ates the auxiliary contacts (5). The closing shock is damped
by the shock absorbers (6).
Holding 0
Once the main contact is closed, the contact pressure is maintained by the closing device (1 ),
either with a reduced holding current (E type) or without current (M type) .
Opening
The circuit-breaker opens either through an over-current tripping or through an appropriate
opening order:
• An over-current, that exceeds the maximum current setting value, lifts the core (8) and causes
the lever (7) to push the fork (2) downward, thus releasing the moving contact (3). See
§ 8 .2. 1 "Operation" for details.
• An opening remote order given to the circuit-breaker cuts off the holding current (E type) or
applies a reverse pulse (M type), which moves the fork (2) toward the closing device (1).
The spring (15) then opens th e moving contact (3) and the guide (4) actuates the auxiliary
contacts (5). The opening shock is damped by the shock absorber (14).
The arc that is generated between the main contacts (3 & 9) moves upwards between the
horns (11 ) into the arc chute (10) and is split by the baffles (12) . The ionized gases are mostly
neutralised by the de-ionizing plates (13).

8.2.1 Operation
When excess current flows through the main circuit, it creates a magnetic field in the tripping
device (11), inducing (12) an upwards movement of its moving magnet (13). This movement
trigger the lever (14) and presses the fork (15) downwards (16), releasing (10) the moving
contact (17).
Important!
When the circuit-breaker trips following an over-current, the fork (15) remains in
closed position and needs to be reset (18) to its open position by giving an "OFF"
order to the closing coil.

8 .3 Breaker control
The circuit-breaker can be maintained in the closed position using either a reduced holding
current (E type) or without current (M type).
Note! Secheron recommends the protection of the closing device coil using an automatic circu it-
breaker with thermal protection, w hich have the following characteristics: a closing pulse duration
of 0.5-1 second, the ability to trigger the circuit-breaker several times consecutively and a holding
current that is limited to 5% of the closing current.
Important!
AI A longer closing pulse may burn the coil.

Important!
When connecting with bars, avoid
creating mechanical stresses in t he
connections (1) by installing the first bar
support (2) not farther than 400 mm from
the connections (1 ).
Contact area
Secheron recommends a minimal contact surface of 1.4 A/mm 2 between each main connection
0
and the cables or bars.

The cables/bars connected directly to the circuit-breaker must comply with the standard IEC/EN
0
60943. The length of these bars/cables must be at least of 2 meters before and after the main
connection s of th e circuit-breaker.
The cabling of the installation behind these 2 meters must comply with the standard EN50343.
Thus the cross-section of the cables/bars can be different in these two sections of the circuit.
Secheron recommends a current density not exceeding 1.7-2.0 A/mm 2 for the high voltage
cables/bars connected to the circuit-breaker and related to therms current of the application .
For current density exceeding this recommended value, the thermal current of the circuit-breaker
must be derated in fu nction of the application.
C.10.2 Procedure
