INTRODUCTION

In the Philippines Urban Planning has a long history. During the Spanish era to the

Americans and up until today. From the barangay, barrio’s, the introduction of plaza and

complexes, from the development of towns to cities. Urban planning and design continuous to

evolve and adapt through the years base on the situation and economic changes of country.

METHODOLOGY

The management of cities in the 21st is different from today as it needs to adapt to

changes such as (technological, social, consumption, demographic and cultural trends). These

changes are the product as well as the process by political and business uncertainty in decision

making. In the current context, in which the problems that are presented to the municipalities

are increasing in quality and quantity (social, economic, unemployment, mobility problems, etc.)

those who must respond from a very limited budget situation due to local financial insufficiency

and at the same time satisfy demands is more necessary than ever to have a strategic city plan.

The main objective of this activity is to determine the urban planning in 3 different cities in manila

and also to know the reason of its different urban designs.

URBAN DESIGN IN MANILA CITIES

Manila already is overcrowded with undisciplined people. But, there is a certain way to

counter the effects of the city’s downfall. The solution is, Urban Design. Urban design is primarily

concerned with the public realm: The space, domain and the environment which can stimulate

psychological effects to its users.

Manila, designed originally by Daniel Burnham is continuously declining its beauty

through the years. Although there are still some place that we have went to that are urban design

are physically intact and still use its function as guide and stimulator to its users. Since Philippines

is a tropical country, green architecture is reinforced within some urban design ideas. While other

concept only focuses on the movement of people to and through on a given space or area. Only

paths, sidewalks, monuments and landmarks are visible but still it is an urban design even without

the presence of ecological environment.

City planners should be mindful in designing such urban places like manila because this

area carries a huge volume of users each day. Better urban planning including proper vehicular

flow and traffic simulation can help boost the city’s economical value. And lastly, based on our

actual set foot on the site, we ourselves are impressed on how urban design can stimulate or

enhance our senses and let us feel what a “sense of place” is all about.

URBAN PLANNING IN MANILA CITIES

I’ve learned a lot in this activity specially about the various implementation and

application of urban planning in the three different cities here in the NCR particularly with regards

to type of area or character in each of its specific cities.

Metro Manila, as the capital of our country is the most developed and urbanized place

here in the Philippines also each of its city is where the busiest part of the country take place.

Manila as A whole is big and the development of its urban design and urban planning thru the

years is different from one place to another, for example BGC Taguig is more developed in terms

of its character and continuity and enclosure while other area such as Roxas Blvd. and Manila

Bay is more developed with regards with its legibility and quality of its public realm.

The development of the urban planning in different cities in metro manila is different

from one another is due to various reasons such as Political; Since there are different leaders in

each cites there are also different rules and urban design implementation in that area. Economic

Status; Urban design implementation in the city also differ from another based on its economic

growth, financially abled cities is more well off in its urban design.

MANILA: URBAN HISTORY AND ITS CHANGES

Manila is the oldest city in the world and the most densely populated city proper in the

world as of 2018. In the past years, manila has its own capability to overgrowth the country’s

GDP per capita by means of agriculture and services. But changes began in the place because of

the corruptions after Marcos’ era. However urbanism taking place most likely in this places. The

place has it’s own circulation of business, good access routes and respects in nature.

As an architecture student, I evaluate the datas and analyze the problems first before

planning for a solutions. The small businesses all around the line have been more accepted by

the government and its republic because of their own personal leisures which cause the place

more populated and more diverse. They are one of the reasons that blocks the sense of place

and human appreciation pertaining to the image of the city. The normal people in manila can’t

adjust to its community because there’s no discipline when it comes to over-acceptance of

projects and establishments leading to poverty. Anyway, Good urban planning can be used by

the public. As a future architect, I must consider it’s benefits towards its users with respect to

its history and environment by setting up criteria.

Future urban planners must consider its history and respect its values not only on

meeting up the satisfaction and standards of general practice. Proper planning discipline and

circulation is the solution to its sustainability. But as of now, old planning is more impressive

than present.

Vehicular pollution, Human-made dirt and distracted human course of movement are the
factors which make an urban design terrible. In some places particularly in BGC Taguig, urban
design is given a huge attention. In this case, the factors mentioned were reduced dramatically.
Why do we need to reduce such undesirable factors? Simply because, urban design and its beauty
plays and contributes a large role in economic growth. With this kind of urban design beauty,
people will be motivated to work hard since the place they move in and through already
symbolizes wealth. A beautiful place is always an image and product of economical growth.

The picture shows an ecological environment associated with the users pathwalks. The
harmony of the green landscape and the pathwalk for user’s function is a good example of urban
design.

Social gatherings and getting along schemes in a certain place is a primary goal of urban
design. An area can always have its sense of place if urban design is applied to it.

In the picture above, People gather around a place decorated with a taste of urban design.
The design automatically incorporates with the human mind and gives it its own perception
which is necessary for the user’s social usage.

Objective of Urban Design: Legibility

Manila is known for being the hosts of events specifically national occasions such as
SONA’s, foreign president visit, rally’s and/or pope visits. Roxas boulevard, A main road to all of
those events is urban designed to cater any of those gatherings.
The island which designates the middle of the road and is decorated with green natural
elements, sidewalks/paths for social or ordinary users and the open view scenery for everyone
to enjoy the green environment characteristic even when this place is purely urbanized.

Environmental approach in urban design is a big factor for the cities’ beautification.
Sometimes we have to get rid of the pollution by using green approach concept. In this concept,
natural shading is acquired, users breaths fresher air and this type of urban set up symbolizes
that a place is economicaly healthy.
As seen in the picture, an over pass is created for the people’s use. It is not an engineering
scope but an architectural. Because, urban design focuses on the people who uses the place.
They are concerned on the issues that the public realm could be affected of. Overpass is a great
example of urban design.

Objective of Urban Design: Ease of Movement

In this photo, it is obvious where the pedestrians and vehicles are able to move. In the design of
cities, it is always planned to reduce human to vehicle accident by separating the paths they take course.
In the picture, traffic is strategically planned to reduce a heavier chances of vehicle traffic. By reducing
traffic, urban design can help boost the economics if the employees aren’t late for work.
