The software provides a comprehensive means for gathering the information that is required to detect
problems early and to prevent them. Information is standardized across the system. You can monitor
multiple servers from a single console. By using the BegiN_PAC_SHORT_NAME_EnD you can easily
collect and analyze Unix OS specific information.
Install the monitoring agent on the system where the application that you want to monitor is located.

After you select an application that includes Unix OS managed systems, you can see Unix OS KPIs in the
application dashboard:
v At the application level, the Current Component Status stacked bar chart shows an average of the
critical, warning, and normal status severities from all the Unix OS managed systems in the
application.
v Click the Unix OS bar in the Current Component Status chart or expand Components in the navigator
Groups section and click Unix OS to see a summary group widget for each Unix OS managed system
in the application.
v Click inside a Unix OS summary group widget or click a Unix OS managed system from the navigator
Unix OS instances section to open a dashboard with details from the selected managed system.
For more information about the KPIs, click in the group widget or click in the upper-right corner
of the dashboard.

transmitted by the network interface collided with another packet. This occurs when
another interface on the same local network transmits a packet at almost the same
time. Note: the value -1 indicates Not Available, -2 indicates Not Collected, 2147483647
indicates Value_Exceeds_Maximum, and -2147483648 indicates
Value_Exceeds_Minimum. Use this attribute to determine if a network interface has an
unacceptable number of packet collisions. Packet collisions cause the interface to
retransmit the packet. With this increased traffic, the likelihood of future collisions
increases. This can result in a steady increase of network traffic to critical levels. This
data is derived from the Collisions attribute in the Network data set.

Value_Exceeds_Minimum. This data is derived from the Input Errors attribute in the
Network data set.
v Packets Output error: The number of packet transmission errors sent by the network
interface during the 30-second monitoring interval. You must provide this interval as
an argument for the netstat -i command to ensure consistency with data obtained from
the system command. Note: the value -1 indicates Not Available, -2 indicates Not
Collected, 2147483647 indicates Value_Exceeds_Maximum, and -2147483648 indicates

operating. The Idle CPU value must be low if the system load is heavy, and high if the
system load is light. If the system load is heavy and the Idle CPU value is high, an I/O
problem might exist. If the Idle CPU value is small, or zero, and the User percentage is
larger (greater than 30%), the system might be compute-bound or in a loop. Note that
the attribute value is averaged in synch with the situation or historical collection
interval. Available on all platforms. This data is derived from the Idle CPU attribute in

The Monitoring Agent for Unix OS comes with predefined eventing thresholds that you can use to
monitor your Unix OS environment.
You can create additional thresholds for the areas of interest in your environment.
After you click System Configuration > Threshold Manager, select Unix OS as the data source type.
The BegiN_PAC_SHORT_NAME_EnD has many data sets that you can use to create eventing thresholds
to monitor for specific conditions.
Tip: If you are an IBM® Tivoli® Monitoring user, data sets are equivalent to attribute groups.
About attributes
Attributes are organized into data sets (also referred to as attribute groups). The values can be selectively
displayed in dashboards or used to define a threshold.
When you view dashboards and use thresholds, data samples of the attributes in the data set are taken.
Dashboards
Attributes are displayed in the dashboards. The widgets specify which attribute values to request
from a monitoring agent.
You can edit the Components group widgets that display in the Application Performance
Dashboard to control how the group widgets are displayed, their positioning, and to adjust the
summary thresholds. After you select a defined application, select the group that is named
Components, and click Actions > Edit to open the editor.
The Attribute Details tab is displayed after you select an instance from the navigator Instances
section (renamed to the selected subgroup name). Alternatively, you can click inside a summary
group widget in the group or subgroup dashboard page. Use the tools in the Attribute Details tab
to create custom charts and tables with data samples from the available data sets.
Thresholds
You can define thresholds that monitor the state of your operating system, database, or
application and open an event when the threshold is exceeded. You use attributes to define
thresholds that describe a condition that you want to test. After the threshold is started, the
values that are specified in the threshold definition are compared with the values that are
collected by the BegiN_PAC_SHORT_NAME_EnD. After the condition is met, an event is
registered and you are alerted by indicator icons in the Application Performance Dashboard
navigator and the Events tab.
The BegiN_PAC_SHORT_NAME_EnD comes with predefined thresholds that are enabled and
started with the agent. If you edit a predefined threshold definition, such as to change a
condition or severity, it is no longer treated as a predefined threshold but considered a custom
threshold.
When the sampled values for the attributes that are referenced in a threshold meet the condition
(such as attribute A is greater than 80%), an event is opened. Note the following conditions:
v When no data can be collected for a data set, an empty result is returned (no rows of data)
v When a specific attribute cannot be collected, the value 0 or “” is returned unless otherwise
specified in a particular attribute (for example, “N/A”)
v Any numeric attribute value that is greater than the largest (positive or negative) number that
can be represented by that type returns the corresponding maximum or minimum value. For
example, the maximum value for a 32-bit number is 2,147,483,647.
These values are displayed as text values that are defined by the data set, such as “Value Exceeds
Maximum” or “Value Exceeds Minimum”.
For a list of the data sets, a list of the attributes in each data set, and descriptions of the attributes in the
BegiN_PAC_SHORT_NAME_EnD, see “Data sets for the monitoring agent” and “Attribute descriptions”
on page 43.

Accessibility features
The web-based interface of IBM Cloud Application Performance Management is the Cloud APM console.
The console includes the following major accessibility features:
v Enables users to use assistive technologies, such as screen-reader software and digital speech
synthesizer, to hear what is displayed on the screen.1 Consult the product documentation of the
assistive technology for details on using those technologies with this product.
v Enables users to operate specific or equivalent features using only the keyboard.
v Communicates all information independently of color.2
The Cloud APM console uses the latest W3C Standard, WAI-ARIA 1.0 (http://www.w3.org/TR/wai-
aria/), to ensure compliance with US Section 508 (http://www.access-board.gov/guidelines-and-
standards/communications-and-it/about-the-section-508-standards/section-508-standards), and Web
Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0 (http://www.w3.org/TR/WCAG20/). To take advantage of
accessibility features, use the latest release of your screen reader in combination with the latest web
browser that is supported by this product.
The Cloud APM console online product documentation in IBM Knowledge Center is enabled for
accessibility. The accessibility features of IBM Knowledge Center are described at http://www.ibm.com/
support/knowledgecenter/doc/kc_help.html#accessibility.
Keyboard navigation
Interface information
The Cloud APM console web user interface does not rely on cascading style sheets to render content
properly and to provide a usable experience. However, the product documentation does rely on
cascading style sheets. IBM Knowledge Center provides an equivalent way for low-vision users to use
their custom display settings, including high-contrast mode. You can control font size by using the device
or browser settings.
The Cloud APM console web user interface includes WAI-ARIA navigational landmarks that you can use
to quickly navigate to functional areas in the application.
The Cloud APM console user interface does not have content that flashes 2 - 55 times per second.
In addition to standard IBM help desk and support websites, IBM has established a TTY telephone
service for use by deaf or hard of hearing customers to access sales and support services:
1. Exceptions include some of the Agent Configuration pages and historical line charts in the Cloud APM console.
2. Exceptions include some Agent Configuration pages of the Cloud APM console.
