Determine the concentration of given unknown H2SO4 Solution using standardized NaOH

FA 1 is sulfuric acid, H2SO4/HCl/HNO3/CH3COOH, of approximate concentration UNKNOWN

FA 2 is sodium hydroxide of approximate concentration 1.0 mol dm–3.
SA 1 is 0.1 mol dm–3 Potassium hydrogen phthalate(KHP). – Student will make
You are also provided with phenolphthalein (indicator).
You will determine the exact concentration of FA 1 by titration.

Part A:
Standardization of NaOH: may not be needed
• Pipette 10.0 cm3 of FA2 into a 100cm3 standard Flask and dilute up to the mark using distilled
water(lable - Diluted FA2).
• Pipette 10.0 cm3 of SA 1 into a Conical flask.
• Add 2/3 drops of phenolphthalein indicator to the flask. Note the colour.
• Fill the burette with Diluted FA2.
• Titrate SA 1 with diluted FA2, until a permanent colour is obtained.

You should perform a rough titration.

In the space below record your burette readings for this rough titration.

The rough titre is ............ cm3

• Carry out as many accurate titrations as you think necessary to obtain consistent
results.
• Record in a suitable form below all of your burette readings and the volume of diluted FA2
added in each accurate titration.
• Make sure that your recorded results show the precision of your practical work. [7]

(a1) From your accurate titration results, obtain a suitable value to be used in your
calculations.
Show clearly how you have obtained this value.
10.0 cm3 of SA 1 required ................ cm3 of Diluted FA2. [1]

(a2) Calculations
Show your working and appropriate significant figures in the final answer to each step
of your calculations.
(i) Calculate how many moles of KHP were present in the volume of SA 1 calculated
in (a1).
............... mol of KHP
(ii) Calculate how many moles of NaOH were present in ------- cm3 of FA 2.

............... mol of NaOH

(iv) Calculate the concentration, in mol dm–3, of NaOH in FA 2.

The concentration of NaOH in FA 2 ............... mol dm–3. [4]
Part b: Estimate concentration of unknown solution of H2SO4
Titration
• Rinse out the pipette with distilled water and then with Unknown H2SO4 .
• Pipette 10.0 cm3 of FA 1 into a conical flask.
• Add 5 drops of phenolphthalein indicator to the flask. The indicator should remain
colourless.
• Fill the burette with Diluted FA2.
• Titrate FA 1 with Diluted FA2, until a permanent pale pink colour is obtained.
You should perform a rough titration.
In the space below record your burette readings for this rough titration.

The rough titre is ............ cm3

results.
• Record in a suitable form below all of your burette readings and the volume of Diluted FA2

(b) From your accurate titration results, obtain a suitable value to be used in your
calculations.
Show clearly how you have obtained this value.
10.0 cm3 of FA 1 required ................ cm3 of Diluted FA2. [1]

(c) Calculations
Show your working and appropriate significant figures in the final answer to each step
of your calculations.
(i) Calculate how many moles of NaOH were present in the volume of FA 2 calculated
in (b).
............... mol of NaOH
(ii) Calculate how many moles of H2SO4 were present in 10.0 cm3 of FA 1.
............... mol of H2SO4
(iii) Calculate the concentration, in mol dm–3, of H2SO4 in FA 1.
The concentration of H2SO4 in FA 1 was ............... mol dm–3. [4]
