Smart city

A smart city is a designation given to a city that incorporates information and communication technologies
(ICT) to enhance the quality and performance of urban services such as energy, transportation and utilities in
order to reduce resource consumption, wastage and overall costs. The overarching aim of a smart city is to
enhance the quality of living for its citizens through smart technology.

Also called eco-city or sustainable city, the smart city aims to improve the quality of urban services or reduce
its costs. It stands out for its specificities: smart management, lifestyle, mobility, housing, as well as a smart
economy.

Their main goal is to reconcile technological innovation with the economic, social and ecological challenges
of the city of tomorrow. Their leitmotiv is the quality of life: how to live better together while respecting our
environment.

London has been declared the smartest city in the world, according to the sixth edition of the annual IESE
(Business School – University Of Navarra) cities in Motion Index 2019.

The Top Ten Smartest Cities in the World

1. London (England’ capital) 6. Tokyo (Japan’s capital)

2. New York (U.S.A) 7. Singapore (southern Malaysia)
3. Amsterdam (Netherlands’ capital) 8. Copenhagen (Denmark’s capital)
4. Paris (France's capital) 9. Berlin (Germany’s capital)
5. Reykjavik (Iceland) 10. Vienna ( Austria’s capital

SMART GOVERNANCE

Smart governance is the process of utilizing modern technologies and ICT to create a collaborative,
communication-based, transparent, and sustainable environment for the citizens and government. Smart
governments can be based on four different models:

 Government to Citizen (G2C) model- In this approach, the government interacts with citizens using
communication mediums such as newspaper, radio, television, and the internet. In addition, the
government provides a platform for citizens to voice their opinions about government policies and
schemes.
 Government to Business (G2B) model- Government communicates with businesses to facilitate the
growth of the economy. Companies can directly acquire knowledge about new policies, taxes,
regulations, and credit facilities. Moreover, governments promote online business practices to save
time and costs, and businesses can collect real-time data from the government.
 Government to government (G2G) model- This model creates a landscape for communication
between government and government organizations, agencies and departments. The aim is to integrate
all channels of governance with the help of ICT tools for a paperless, corruption-free, and sustainable
system.
 Government to Employee (G2E) model- With this model, the government can communicate with
employees and companies. Furthermore, personal information of employees such as social security
number, bank details, and personal details are stored in a government database. In addition,
organizations can carry out employee-related tasks such as payroll, bank loans, medical plans, and
pension plans online.

Smartphone

A smartphone is a cellular telephone with an integrated computer and other features not originally associated
with telephones, such as an operating system, web browsing and the ability to run software applications.

A smartphone has more advanced features, including web browsing, software applications and a mobile OS.
In turn, a smartphone also offers capabilities such as support for biometrics, video chatting, digital
assistants and much more.

The best smartphone of 2019

1. Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus 6. iPhone XS

2. Huawei P30 Pro 7. Huawei P30
3. Samsung Galaxy S10 8. OnePlus 7 Pro
4. Huawei Mate 20 Pro 9. Google Pixel 3 XL
5. Samsung Galaxy Note 9 10. Samsung Galaxy S10e

Smart Economy

Smart economy is the intersection between the economy and Smart Cities. This is a very broad definition but
we roughly broke it into three different components: how Smart Cities technologies are changing urban
commerce, the Smart City as an economic driver, and the economics behind Smart Cities.
Smart Human

Human intelligence, mental quality that consists of the abilities to learn from experience, adapt to new
situations, understand and handle abstract concepts, and use knowledge to manipulate one’s environment.

Smart Environment

Small world where different kinds of smart device are continuously working to make inhabitants' lives more
comfortable. Smart environments aim to satisfy the experience of individuals from every environment, by
replacing the hazardous work, physical labor, and repetitive tasks with automated agents.

To build a smart environment, involves technologies of

 Wireless communication
 Algorithm design, signal prediction & classification, information theory
 Multilayered software architecture
 Speech recognition
 Image processing, image recognition
 Sensors design, calibration, motion detection, temperature, pressure sensors, accelerometers
 Semantic Web and knowledge graphs
 Adaptive control,
 Computer networking
 Parallel processing
 Operating systems

Vehicle-infrastructure-pedestrian (VIP)

Vehicle-infrastructure-pedestrian (VIP) environment made it easier and cheaper to collect, store, analyze, use,
and disseminate multi-source data. A connected VIP environment also makes the system more flexible so that
real-time management and control measures can be implemented to improve system performance. With a
connected environment, vehicles, infrastructure, and pedestrians can exchange information, either through a
peer-to-peer connectivity protocol or through a centralized system via a 4G or more advanced
telecommunication network (VIP environment). Such technology is regarded as one of the most potentially
disruptive technologies for the urban eco-system.

The interaction and exchange of information can occur vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V), vehicle-to-infrastructure
(V2I), pedestrian-to-infrastructure (P2I), or vehicle-to-pedestrian (V2P). Given the benefits of a connected
environment, and considering its unique characteristics, it is crucial to understand how current intelligent
transportation systems could be adapted to work with the connected environment.
