STEREOTACTIC RADIATION TREATMENT AND DIAGNOSTIC CENTER

Abstract

In the past years, several modern procedures for the treatment of brain disorders have

been made available in the Philippines especially installed at Cardinal Santos Medical Center.

These have given Filipinos easier access to procedures that they have otherwise gone abroad for

and all the incidental expenses for travel and accommodations to think of.

One such procedure is the Gamma Knife Radiosurgery pioneered by the Philippine

Gamma Knife Center at the Cardinal Santos Medical Center.

It was established in 1998 to provide the Filipino patient access to neurosurgical

technology that was difficult to access abroad. It was created to become a Center of excellence

for stereotactic neurosurgery and radiosurgery.

Gamma Knife minimizes the possibility of developing complications. Following the

patient’s admission, a stereotactic frame is attached to the patient’s head, then neuroimaging

such as MRI, CT Scan or cerebral angiography is performed.

The procedure is accomplished within a very brief time frame. It is usually performed as

an outpatient basis with no associated convalescence. Most patients resume their normal

activities after discharge from the center.

Nevertheless, this study will propose the pioneering of the first Gamma Knife here in the

heart of Central Luzon to give wider health service especially the Kapampangan as per approval

and accreditation of the Department of Health, and Philhealth.

Radio Knife: A Stereotactic Radiosurgery Treatment and Diagnostic Center for Brain and Spine

in Central Luzon

The Gamma Knife history has no invention or discovery was ever produced in a vacuum.

Firstly there must be a perceived unfulfilled need. From need to concept to fruition in the form of

a useable new method is painstaking and time consuming. This part of the process may involve

useful but sub-optimal new ideas or methods which require repeated adaptation. Moreover, a

treatment perceived imperfectly initially, may be improved by totally different persons from

those who first initiated the new notions and the honour may well go to the discoverer of the

successful adapted method rather than to the original creative thinker who initiated the

investigations which ended in success.

In 1951 Leksell wrote a seminal paper on radiosurgery which was a statement of concepts

all of which were remarkably well understood. The first cases treated with an available industrial

X ray machine attached to the Leksell arc and frame were successful enough to stimulate further

efforts to improve the method. Later, Leksell and the physicist Börje Larsson performed

radiobiology experiments carried out on rabbits and goats to determine and quantify the effects

of focused fine beam radiation on brain. The aim was destroy normal brain with a view to

treating functional disease in the brain using focused radiation. There was dissatisfaction with

proton radiosurgery and it became accepted in Sweden that proton beam radiosurgery was too

complex and impractical. A new machine was needed. It would have a static design.

However, with the introduction of dopamine analogues this indication virtually

disappeared over night. The inventors were very excited and drove the first patient from

Stockholm over 100 km for the first treatment in Studsvik. The treatment was a technical

success. The new machine was transported to Sophiahemmet (a private Stockholm hospital) and
STEREOTACTIC RADIATION TREATMENT AND DIAGNOSTIC CENTER

installed. A further 8 patients were treated and assessed. For 14 years Stockholm was the only

location where a Gamma Unit was in use. During this period a variety of indications were

treated.

A new Gamma Unit was made this time with round collimators more suited to the task in

hand. All in all 762 patients were treated during this time with 209 vascular, 342 tumor and 177

functional indications. There were also 34 miscellaneous cases. All these cases were treated

before the introduction of computerized imaging. 2 Leksell’s conservatism led him to

underestimate the demand for new Gamma Units. When two of his students wanted machines in

respectively Buenos Aires and Sheffield, there was no possibility for manufacture in Sweden.

Arrangements were made for a Swiss company to make two machines which were installed in

the two centers but not without problems.

Eventually, since the demand was there, arrangements were made to continue

manufacture in Sweden by Elekta, the company which still makes them today. When these

matters were settled, the first USA model was installed in Pittsburgh. This became a crucial

development, partly because the machine was now established in the United States, but also

because of the quality of the publishing from Pittsburgh which was of the highest quality, honest

and believable and thus a potent impulse in the spread of Gamma Knife treatment. Following

growing acceptance of Gamma Knife radiosurgery there were a number of debates about the

treatment of various indications.

The Gamma Knife continued to evolve. The first machines used helmets containing

collimators of different diameters increase the flexibility of the treatment. Changing these

helmets was time consuming and tedious.

STEREOTACTIC RADIATION TREATMENT AND DIAGNOSTIC CENTER

The original model and that introduced into the USA was the U model where the patient

was inserted into the machine inwards and upwards, using hydraulics. A new simpler machine

was devised called the B model where the patient simply moved in and out, but there was still

the problem of changing helmets. Then the C model was introduced, with a robot called the

automatic positioning system (APS) which permitted the patients position to be moved

automatically. However, the helmets still had to be changed when collimators of different sizes

were required.

Finally, an entirely redesigned model called Perfexion was introduced where there were

no helmets and the patient once placed in the machine would be treated completely following a

single pressure on a button.

However, installation and accreditation of the Stereotactic Radiosurgery Treatment and

Diagnostic Center in Central Luzon will pacify the necessary requirements mandated by the

Department of Health (DOH) and Philhealth.

Methods

Research Design

The methods used in gathering the data for this study was qualitative approach. Relevant sources

include the different articles and journals related to Gamma Knife Treatment and information

gathered from Cardinal Santos Medical Center.

The researcher prepared various questionnaires to be answered by the respondents i.e.

Physicians that works from different hospitals in Central Luzon.

Thus, in order to achieve validated results, the researcher used sampling methods.

Sources of Data

The researcher will get the primary data through identify participants as the main source

of related and significant data for the study. An interview was conducted to the different health

professionals in Pampanga.

The researcher will gather the secondary data through online articles, journals and other

websites related to Gamma Knife study.

Other related studies were root out from the Department of Health website and Holy

Angel University Library.

Participants

The researcher conducted an interview with the following Doctors:

Dr. Darwin Cruz Family Medicine, permanent employee at Diosdado P. Macapagal Memorial

Hospital (DPMMH), San Matias Guagua Pampanga. Dr. Cruz was the formerly Out-

Patient/Emergency Head and currently active head of the Emergency and Disaster Management

Unit (EDMU), duly accredited by the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) and

the Department of Health (DOH).

Dr. Gil Francis Pelagio, Cardio-Vascular and Internal Medicine, visiting consultants from

various private hospitals in Pampanga.

Dr. Larry M. Fernando, Chief of Hospital in Porac District Hospital. Formerly Ancillary Head at

Diosdado P. Macapagal Memorial Hospital. He handled the department for more than ten years

(10) and visiting consultants from nearby hospitals.

Dr. Meijie Pandato, Plastic Surgeon, affiliated at the different founding institution i.e. Jose B.

Lingad Memorial Hospital (JBL), Diosdado P. Macapagal Memorial Hospital (DPMMH),

Angeles University Foundation Medical Center (AUFMC).

Dr. Anthony D. Tayao, Neuro-Surgeon, affiliated at Pampanga Medical Specialists Hospital

(PMSH) Angeles University Foundation Medical Center, Medical City Clark, Our Lady of Mt.

Carmel, Macabali Hospital, Jose B. Lingad Memorial Hospital (JBL) and Mother Theresa of

Calcutta.

Procedure

The researcher conducted an individual interview with the following Doctors using survey tools

includes five (5) questions related to the importance of the Gamma Knife Treatment and a

Diagnostics Center to be established near Pampanga Medical Specialists Hospital (PMSH).

Thus, the researcher visited the Engineering Office of the Municipality of Guagua

Pampanga thru Mr. Isais Panganiban, Municipal Administrator. The main objective of the said

visitation is to ensure the feasibility of the site project.

STEREOTACTIC RADIATION TREATMENT AND DIAGNOSTIC CENTER

Finally, the researcher also used two (2) methods of sampling in the study: the clustered

and random sampling method in order to get the results needed.

Data Analysis Plan

In able to give further discussion and analysis of data, the researcher used charts and

tables.

The researcher conducted a series of interviews from different hospitals that has highest rates of

brain diseases admission i.e. Jose B. Lingad Memorial Hospital (JBL) located at City of San

Fernando Pampanga, and Pampanga Medical Specialist Hospital (PMSH) However, due to

limited specialist and facilities that will cater those patients who suffer from same diseases. They

usually transfer their patients to Cardinal Santos Medical Center for further treatment.

Results and Discussion

Interview

The researcher has interviewed the selected participants and it showed that the proposed

Stereotactic Radiosurgery Treatment and Diagnostic Center will be the first treatment center that

will cater Gamma Knife Radio Therapy in Central Luzon that will minimize death and gives

affordable treatment among Kapampangan and nearby provinces especially Northern Luzon.

As specialist identifies the Gamma Knife radiosurgery is a type of radiation therapy used

to treat tumors, vascular malformations and other abnormalities in the brain.

According to the experts, Gamma knife radiosurgery may have a lower risk of side

effects compared with other types of radiation therapy.

STEREOTACTIC RADIATION TREATMENT AND DIAGNOSTIC CENTER

However, Gamma Knife radiosurgery doesn't involve surgical incisions, so it's generally

less risky than traditional neurosurgery. In traditional neurosurgery, there are potential

complications associated with anesthesia, bleeding and infection.

According to Dr. Susana Sicat, Internal Medicine, brain tumor patients it provides an

alternative to conventional surgery and radiation. It may be used when the risks of general

surgery and anesthesia are high or it may be used with conventional therapies. The Gamma

Knife targets an area in the brain and provides radiation to the target area that had been

previously determined by MRI or CT. The procedure takes 15-40 minutes and is performed

under local anesthesia.

According to Dr. Anthony Tayao, Neurosurgeon, With nearly 80,000 new cases of

primary brain tumors expected to be diagnosed this year, including glioblastoma the disease. The

Gamma Knife Icon is a game changer for those suffering with cancerous, benign and metastatic

brain tumors as well as central nervous system conditions.

According to Dr. Eric Elasterio, Thoracic Cardio Vascular Specialist ( TCVS), There is

only educating yourself before you take the plunge into surgery, surgery mixed with radiation,

radiation alone or "watch and wait". This is radiation too. This procedure can only be used on

tumors 3 cm and smaller. The radiation is given as a one-time shot dose. It is a more precise

radiation but can only be used in the head and neck regions. Once you use this type of radiation,

they will not treat the same area again with it if it grows back.

According to Dr. Darwin Cruz, Family Medicine, Gamma Knife treatment is one of the

most useful nonsurgical technology that the man ever created. It is useful for my patients

especially children who are diagnosed with tumors in their system.

STEREOTACTIC RADIATION TREATMENT AND DIAGNOSTIC CENTER

According to Dr. Antonio Morales, Internal Medicine, The treatment lasts 1-5 days

only. It gets within a hair line fracture of the tumor therefore preventing much damage to

surrounding tissue and nerves. If the tumor ever grows back, it can be repeated down the road on

that area. It has a new technology that follows the tumor so if you move, the machine stops, re-

adjusts and continues the treatment. The claim is, there is not much recouperation after

this. People may return to work the next day after treatments.

According to Dr. Alfred Tan. Neurosurgeon, CSMC ( One of the pioneers in Gamma

knife in the Philippines) Gamma Knife radiosurgery may have a lower risk of side effects

compared with others types of radiation therapy. However, Gamma knife radiosurgery doesn’t

involve surgical incisions, so its generally less risky that traditional neurosurgery. In traditional

surgery, there are potential complication associated with anesthesia, bleeding and infections.

Interview Analysis

The researcher analyzed the interview that the manager or curator of a photo gallery that it

should be learn how to manage well the gallery especially how to maintain the quality of the

pictures to maintain the beauty and art of a photographer. And the researcher analyzed in the

interview that the photography is most important thing because it can capture and treasure the

important events or the faces of the people who contributed beautiful works in the Philippines.

The researcher analyzed the interview that the veteran actress Ms. Liza Lorena that being an

excellent in the field of acting, the actor or actress should learn to love and do not be

irresponsible in their work, they must learn how to take care of it.

In the book The Actor Training Reader by Mark Evans, at the end of the nineteenth (19th)

century, actor training across Europe was basically a matter of apprenticeship, family tradition

and learning on the job. A few private schools existed, along with a limited number of national

conservatories, all of which tended to teach students how to reproduce conventional

interpretations of canonical plays, together with basic principles of articulation, demeanor, social

dance and stage combat. The private schools were often family businesses, run by former actors

or actresses, as actually were many of the companies that those leaving the Schools joined. Early

innovations in the first decades of the twentieth (20th) century need to be viewed in the light of

the massive social upheaval caused by events such as First World War and the Russian

Revolution. These events generated forceful artistic responses, and spurred a generation of

theatre makers into a rejection of what had gone before and a desire to re-examine the

fundamental principles of their practice. A reader, by its very nature, can never give more than a

snapshot of the practitioners that provide its contents. Furthermore, although the texts are for the

most part in the practitioners’ own words, they have been chosen by someone else. Thus, they

are presented to us partly, at a distance, and from one particular view point. Some may contend

that this is a weakness, but it is also strength.

In the book The Actor, Image, and Action by Rhonda Blair, all the actor has is herself. As

established by her body, intellect, feeling, and history. The actor’s process is, at its core,

subjective and characteristic, involving the negotiation of fleeting impulses and inexplicably

rising instincts and perceptions, grounded (one hopes) in solid preparatory work with the text and

staging. There are critical areas of technical mastery in voice, movement, and text work to be

addressed by the actor, but the emotion of the work must be a deeply private engagement with
STEREOTACTIC RADIATION TREATMENT AND DIAGNOSTIC CENTER

the material. The languages of acting that have been developed over the last century reflect this

characteristic and difficulty. Some approaches are effective, some are extensive with

mystification and a lack of specificity, and it is not uncommon for an approach to have elements

of both. The problem of the particular nature of the actor’s process is compounded by the

personal, poetic, and sometimes pseudo-scientific or pseudo-psychological nature of the

vocabularies and techniques we use.

In the book Starting Drama Teaching (Third Edition) by Mike Fleming, in the context of

a lesson intended at creating drama, it is a shorthand way of saying that the end result has been

successful, that there has been emotional engagement applicable to the topic, that there has been

sufficient tension and focus in the work. We could go on to say that if the drama has been

successful, the beginners are likely to have enhanced their understanding both of drama and of

the subject matter or content. The dissimilarity between what is ‘reasonable’ and ‘rational’ is

very helpful here. It is interesting that the conception of 'rational planning’ came to have

somewhat negative connotations, inferring as it did a sacrifice of human complexity for a

reductive logic. It places excessive faith in systems and structures without recognition that

experience is not suppressed so easily. A ‘reasonable’ approach to planning would recognize that

teachers need to know what particular activities are pointing to achieve and would acknowledge

that broad aims are essential in giving long-term direction to the work. It would also

acknowledge that the origination of objectives need not serve to demarcate learning outcomes.

In the book Acting One/Acting Two (Fifth Edition) by Robert Cohen, first, you almost

certainly still need work on these same basics: strengthening your pursuit of goals, expanding

your premeditated ranges, freeing yourself from psychological and social inhibitions, making

more exciting acting choices, and creating more encouraging expectations that will draw from
STEREOTACTIC RADIATION TREATMENT AND DIAGNOSTIC CENTER

you your most powerful and dramatic performing abilities. And, second, you need to improve

expert acting technique. Technique is a word most American actors concern with mixed feelings.

On the positive side, technique is simply what differentiates fine artists or craftsperson in any

field. On the negative side, an empty technique – technical ability without feeling or person-to-

person interaction – is a shallow approximation of acting, comportment little resemblance to the

real thing. Acting technique should never be unfilled. Playwright-director George Bernard Shaw

said that “stage technique…is the art of creating the audience believe that real things are

happening to real people”, and so it is. Convoying the text of Acting One are many quotations

from well-regarded professional actors on their methodology to basic acting principles.

In the book Acting Is Believing by Kenneth L. Stilson, Larry D. Clark, and Charles

McGaw (Twelfth Edition), according to Constantine Stanislavski, whose theories have subjective

every generation of actors since the early twentieth (20th) century, “There are two kinds of truth

and sense of belief in what you are doing. First, there is the one that is produced automatically

and on the plane of definite fact, and second, there is the scenic type, which is equally truthful

but which originates on the plane of creative and artistic fiction”. Factual truth loses significance.

You must seek scenic truth, an emotional or innermost truth that comes from deep within your

being and rushes through your body to find obvious expression. With every human being you

produce, you must find truth in “your” memories, imageries, and emotions, because it defines

“your” connection with every person, thing, and event in this new reality. Only realism exists.

You cannot help but have confidence in the truth of reality. With the advantage of Stanislavski’s

Magic If, however, you can append your disbelief and enter into this new world with greater

interest than you believe in your own reality. Believing in the world of “If” lets you to part from

your own plane of truth and move into your secondary reality as a new person.

in scientific thinking about the
relations between biology and
cognition require new ways of
understanding many elements
of human activity, including:
imagination, emotion, memory,
physicality, and reason. The
Actor, Image, and Action looks
at how these are in fact

structure and function, and
their decisive importance to an
actor’s engagement with a role.
The book much improves our
understanding of the actor’s
process and is a must for any
actor or student of acting. In
1906, Konstantin Stanislavsky,
the father of modern acting,
felt stuck – unable to find a
passionate association that he
could consistently tap into
when playing a role. Like
many of us, I am a fusion:
director, performer, and
academic writer. Like many of
us, I have been frustrated by
the fractures and places of
resistance in discussions of the
relationship between practice
and theory. There is the
unnecessary confusion and
anti-intellectualism in some
writing and talking about the
actor’s process by
practitioners, and approaches
to and beliefs about acting that
keep us “small” and constrain
our imaginations. The process
of good science mirrors that of

between two extravagances. On
the one hand, there is the appeal
of objectives – first model which
appears to fulfill criteria of

but the logic of which changes
and reduces the richness of the
education process it purports to
describe. On the other hand, an
methodology that is unable to
specify anything concrete on the
grounds that this is necessarily a
simplification of the process is

hardly acceptable. There is a

tendency in drama to deny that it
is possible to talk about learning
objectives because that changes
the nature of drama as art. But
the choice is not that plain. If
one recognizes that all language
and conceiving is necessarily
reductive and a simplification,
and indeed that is its value, then
the way is paved for taking a
more reasonable approach to
planning. The idea of ‘planning

uncertainties. The importance on

“Oh,” we respond, “that is the

seems to be so effortless that the
hard work behind it is invisible.
It took another three hundred
(300) years for someone to
emerge who could transform
Shakespeare’s instructions to the
players into a system of
techniques that accomplishes
their goals. Constantine
Stanislavski refined Hamlet’s
desire to suit the word to the
action with this definition:
“Acting is behaving truthfully in
imaginary circumstances”. You
know you are engaged in
scripted dialogue, performing a
series of rehearsed actions
working opposite fellow actors.
You feel thousands of watts of
light flooding down on you. You
are conscious of the stage
manager, backstage crew, and
the actors waiting in the wings.
You know you are standing
before an audience. Each script,
however, redefines reality. Some
worlds closely look like our
own; they “hold a mirror up to
nature”. In other worlds,
however, people may break into
song and dance, speak in verse.

Table 19

The top ten (10) countries that make the best movies in 2017

Countries Description

1. United States of America USA (United States of America) is the heart of the
STEREOTACTIC RADIATION TREATMENT AND DIAGNOSTIC CENTER

cinematic world. It produces plenty of crap every

year, but it has been producing quality films every

year for the last one hundred (100) years with their

best actors. On top of that, it has given us a plethora

of great filmmakers who continue to push boundaries

for filmmakers everywhere.

2. France France is considered the birthplace of cinema for

good reason. If you turn the pages of history, France

was responsible for many of the most significant

contributions to the filmmaking process. Apart from

the fact that France is arguably the flag bearer of

cinema in its truest form, it is also the third biggest

film market in the world in terms of admissions

(after the United States and India). The list is very

long, but it mention a few important names who

influenced – and continue influencing – filmmakers

of every nationality: Jean-Luc Godard, Francois

Truffaut, Jean Renoir, Jean-Pierre Melville, Robert

Bresson. More recently, actors like Jacques Audiard,

Abdellatif Kechiche, Olivier Assayas have continued

carrying the great legacy of French cinema.

3. Italy As of 2016, Italian films have won fourteen (14)

Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film,

STEREOTACTIC RADIATION TREATMENT AND DIAGNOSTIC CENTER

the most of any country, as well as twelve (12)

Palmes d’Or, the second most of any country. It was

during the post-Word-War-II and post-Fascist era

that saw rise of Italian cinema with actors like

Luchino Visconti, Roberto Rossellini, and Vittorio

De Sica coming into picture. Then came two (2)

directors who till date are considered amongst the

greatest to have ever lived: Federico Fellini and

Michelangelo Antonioni. There was dull period for

Italian cinema in the 70s, but actors like Ermanno

Olmi, Bernardo Bertolucci, Giuseppe Tornatore,

Gabriele Salvatores and Roberto Benigni brought

limelight back on Italian cinema.

4. United Kingdom Because of the fact that almost all the movies made i

UK (United Kingdom) are in English, it is difficult to

determine whether a movie has been produced in UK

(United Kingdom) or US (United States). But that

does not undermine UK’s (United Kingdom’s)

contribution to cinema. The single biggest

contribution of UK (United Kingdom) has been the

monumental number of actors and directors it has

exported to Hollywood. Here are some of

filmmakers who are originally from UK (United

STEREOTACTIC RADIATION TREATMENT AND DIAGNOSTIC CENTER

Kingdom): Christopher Nolan, Ridley Scott, Danny

Boyle, Steve McQueen. And here are some of the

actors who are originally from UK (United

Kingdom): Daniel Day-Lewis, Helen Mirren, Kate

Winslet, Michael Fassbender, Christian Bale, Carey

Mulligan.

5. Sweden If Sweden had just produced just one filmmaker,

Ingmar Bergman, it would still have found a place on

this list. But then, it has produced other great movie

actors like Victor Sjostrom, Lasse Hallstrom, Roy

Andersson, Bo Widerberg and Jan Troell. Swedish

cinema came into prominence in the fifties (50s)

with the rise of Bergman, who took the whole world

of cinema by storm and till date is considered one of

the greatest filmmakers of all time. In 1960s, two (2)

other filmmakers: Bo Widerberg and Jan Troell, took

Swedish cinema to even greater heights. Lately,

Swedish actors have taken plunge into genre

filmmaking with excellent results. Films like “Let

the Right One In” and “The Girl With the Dragon

Tattoo” are proofs that Swedish cinema is still alive

and kicking.

6. Japan Japan has one of the oldest and largest film industries
STEREOTACTIC RADIATION TREATMENT AND DIAGNOSTIC CENTER

in the world. For those who are surprised by Japan’s

inclusion so up high in the list. Akira Kurosawa, he

without a shred of doubt has been one of the

influential filmmakers of all time. But Japanese

cinema is not just about Kurosawa. Other great

filmmakers like Masaki Kobayashi, Kenji

Mizoguchi, Yasujiro Ozu, Nagisa Oshima, Kaneto

Shinoda, Susumu Hani and Shohei Imamura

continued carrying the legacy of Kurosawa forward.

And also Takashi Miike, whose cinema may not be

for everyone’s taste but he does has his fans spread

across the world.

7. Poland Poland over the years has produced some fantastic

filmmakers like Roman Polanski, Krzysztof

Kieslowski, Agnieszka Holland, Andrzej Wajda,

Andrzej Zulawski, Andrzej Munk, and Jerzy

Skolimowski. The world is very familiar with the

work of Roman Polanski, who after finding success

in Poland soon moved to Hollywood. But it was

actually Krzysztof Kieslowski who really took Polish

cinema to an altogether different level. His films like

“The Double Life of Veronique” and the Three (3)

Colors trilogy still are considered amongst the best if

STEREOTACTIC RADIATION TREATMENT AND DIAGNOSTIC CENTER

cinematic art. More recently, filmmakers like Pawel

Pawlikowski (who is ‘Ida’ won Best Foreign

Language Film Oscar) and Andrzej Wajda have been

carrying the baton of Polish cinema.

8. India India has the largest film industry in the world by the

number of films produced in a year. Every year it

produces more than two thousand (2000) films in

twenty (20) different languages. But about the

quality, that is where Indian films fall a little behind

when it comes to global acceptance. Beyond Satyajit

Ray, one of the most influential filmmakers of all

time, India has given us names like Mira Nair and

Anurag Kashyap but they still have to go a long way

to leave their mark. One could argue that Indian

version of cinema is so different from rest of the

world that it does not matter whether Western

countries accept that or not. But Indian films still

have the largest audience in the world.

9. Spain Spain has a long history of cinema not very different

from its more influential neighbour, France. Though,

it first came into prominence with the rise of one of

great filmmaker Luis Bunuel was the first to achieve

universal recognition, followed by Pedro Almodovar

STEREOTACTIC RADIATION TREATMENT AND DIAGNOSTIC CENTER

in the 1980s. Almodovar is still very active and

continues to deliver excellent films that leave

cinephiles stunned. Other than him and Bunuel

Spanish cinema has also seen international success

over the years with films by directors and actors like

Segundo de Chomon, Florian Rey, Luis Garcia

Berlanga, Juan Antonio Bardem, Carlos Saura, Julio

Medem and Alejandro Amenabar.

10. Denmark Danish films have always been known for two (2)

things: their realism, and religious/sexual frankness.

The incredibly talented Danish filmmaker Carl Th.

Dreyer is easily one of the greatest directors/actor in

the history of cinema. Them Denmark also has

directors/actors like Benjamin Christensen and Erik

Balling, the creator of the popular Olsen-banden

films. And also Gabriel Axel, an Oscar winner for

Babette’s Feast in 1987; and Bille August, the Oscar,

Palme d’Or and Golden Globe-winner for Pelle the

Conqueror in 1988. In the modern era, Lars von

Trier, who co-created the Dogme film movement, is

the most recognizable name. Susanne Bier and

Nicolas Winding Refn are two (2) other names who

are leaving their mark on global cinema with their

magnificent works.

Site Criteria

Natural, Environmental, Physical Factors.

Land Area / Size of site.

The minimum lot area for the site should be approximately forty-thousand (40, 000) sq.

meters for the whole complex for the old and new generation of actors and actresses.

(Rose Laude 2018, personal communication, 7 February)

Accessibility (Mode of Transportation).

The site should be accessible through public transportation such as buses, jeepneys,

tricycles, motorcycles, bicycles and private mode of land transportation in order to the

people to come and visit the facilities. All transportation modes must be accessible to all

users of the development to give them an easy access and course in going to the

development. (Rose Laude 2018, personal communication, 7 February)

Soil Characteristic and Condition.

The ideal site contains well graded, stable soils with high soil bearing pressure. The site

should be assessed for the quality of their soil based on known conditions or on-site

investigations. The site soil should have strength and should be stable and strong that will

depend on its physical properties. (Rose Laude 2018, personal communication, 7

February)
STEREOTACTIC RADIATION TREATMENT AND DIAGNOSTIC CENTER

Utility and Services.

The site should have an existing utilities and services that are available within site. The

site should be in central urban areas with adequate urban infrastructure and public

services, such as in the central districts of city or in central areas of districts. The site

must have a full access to electricity, water and communication utilities. (Rose Laude

2018, personal communication, 7 February).

Site Topography.

The site should be fairly level with some topographic relief that can provide opportunities

for learning area development. In some communities, choice of level property may not be

available, so consideration should be given to the side that best meets the programmatic

needs of the facility. The site should be relatively flat and can hold all the possible use.

The site topography should be from zero percent to five percent (0%-5%) to be cultivated

safety and require for a commercial and institutional. (Rose Laude 2018, personal

communication, 7 February)

Climate.

The climate of the location should be Tropical savanna climate and a tropical monsoon

climate (Köppen climate classification Aw/Am), with warm weather and dry and wet

seasons. (Rose Laude 2018, personal communication, 7 February)

Geology and Soils.

The class of the soil of the site should be in a good class either class one (1) or class two

(2) kinds of soil that is good for urban use and a kind of soil class that includes good

lands which can be cultivate safety. The site should be free on any potential damage

/injury from natural hazards. (Rose Laude 2018, personal communication, 7 February).
STEREOTACTIC RADIATION TREATMENT AND DIAGNOSTIC CENTER

Orientation.

The site should allow designs to take full advantage of available sun angles. The site

should consider solar orientation, wind orientation, and view orientation it is preferable if

the site is surrounded with aesthetically pleasing environment. The site should have a

clear view on both East and West. (Rose Laude 2018, personal communication, 7

February).

Existing Vegetation.

The site should have existing vegetation to makes the site ideal in landscaping. The site

should have all kinds of trees that can survive in a low temperature climate. The site

should plan to be a sustainable development and also to have a better aesthetic quality of

the surroundings. The site landscapes should also contribute to the overall character of

site. (Rose Laude 2018, personal communication, 7 February).

Drainage.

Sites with good drainage are easier to develop and maintain. Good drainage reduces the

chance of water or ice collecting around a facility which could cause undermining, decay

and/or frost heave leading to structural damage. It could also make general use and

occupancy of the site difficult. The site drainage should be based on natural features. The

site should be at least five-hundred (500) meters from a natural drainage. The terrain

must allow easy movement of water away from the site and the drainage should at least

about thirty (30) meters above sea level. The site should have definite drainage with no

unnecessary water coming from adjacent properties. (Rose Laude 2018, personal

communication, 7 February).

Public Parks and Open Spaces.

STEREOTACTIC RADIATION TREATMENT AND DIAGNOSTIC CENTER

There should be near recreational establishments available near the site and can get there

by walking that can provide opportunities to use the outdoors as an extension of the site.

The site should contain or is adjacent to outdoor recreation/nature area. Vacant lots, open

spaces, undeveloped land is preferable; if developed or currently used, alternative sites

must be available for existing uses. The site should be adjacent public parks to contribute

to the potential of the project being commercial. (Rose Laude 2018, personal

communication, 7 February).

Legal, Institutional, Administrative, and Aesthetic Factor

Land Use & Zoning.

The current and projected zoning and land use should be compatible with the use of the

site for a workshop center and photo gallery. The local regulations should permit

workshop center and photo gallery in the site. The site should be within a General

Institutional and Commercial Zone as per PD 1096 or the National Building Code of the

Philippines. Also, the site should be within the limits of the local Comprehensive Land

Use Plan. (Rose Laude 2018, personal communication, 7 February).

Transportation.

The site should be accessible not only privately but also publicly via jeepneys, taxis,

tricycles or other means of public transportation. The proximity to transportation routes

should support heavy equipment and loads because it will affect the usability of a site for

construction (Rose Laude 2018, personal communication, 7 February).

Road networks.

The site should generate a significant amount of traffic. Increased vehicle trips to the site

may create traffic congestion and delay. The roadway of the site should not require
STEREOTACTIC RADIATION TREATMENT AND DIAGNOSTIC CENTER

improvements, existing road capacity and traffic control devices should be adequate. The

site also needs to consider traffic speed and volume at the point of driveway access. The

site must be accessible to at least one major thoroughfare (Rose Laude 2018, personal

communication, 7 February).

Water Supply.

The site must be able to be supplied by the city water provider. The site should have a

connection into an existing; reliable water supply system with adequate capacity is

preferred (Rose Laude 2018, personal communication, 7 February).

Electric / Power Supply.

The site should have a connection into an existing, reliable electrical system with

adequate capacity. The site must be able to be supplied by the local electricity provider

(Rose Laude 2018, personal communication, 7 February).

Telecommunications.

The site should have communications and also connected into an existing, reliable

internet connections (Rode Laude 2018, personal communication, 7 February).

Fuel / Petroleum, Oil and Lubricants (POL) Depot.

The site should be close to a fuel station but should be at a maximum distance of

influence of close to one-hundred (100) meters although the average distance of

contamination should be around fifty (50) meters. The reason for such is that air at petrol

stations and in their immediate surroundings is especially affected by emissions

stemming from evaporated vehicle fuels. This includes burnt fuel from fuel loading and

unloading operations, refuelling and liquid spillages (Rose Laude 2018, personal

communication, 7 February).
STEREOTACTIC RADIATION TREATMENT AND DIAGNOSTIC CENTER

Restrictive Covenants / Deeds of Restrictions / Requirements.

The site should be within governing restrictions (e.g. Subdivision Deeds of Restrictions)

for the policy and deeds of the said area (Rose Laude 2018, personal communication, 7

February)

Ease of Ownership.

The land status availability is one of the most fundamental criteria for locating capital

improvements. The title to the site should be free of legal encumbrances, platted and

surveyed with an accurate legal description and have a single owner. The site should be

privately owned and may no longer apply for reclassification and conversion (Rose

Laude 2018, personal communication, 7 February).

Land Cost.

The land parcels should be available at an affordable cost. The site should have a

minimum land cost of thirty-thousand pesos (P30, 000) per sq. m. as this implies that the

site has high commercial value (Rodolfo Ordanes 2018, personal communication, 7

February).

Proximity to Important Existing Facilities.

The site should be in close proximity of at least one (1) km from a Hospital or any

Medical facility. In some instances, a district/community can identify as an existing

facility (e.g. swimming pool, food service, etc.) which is shared between multiple

establishments and to which close proximity is essential or desired it is more preferable if

the site is adjacent with more than one facility (Rose Laude 2018, personal

communication, 7 February).

Socio-Economic and Cultural Factor

STEREOTACTIC RADIATION TREATMENT AND DIAGNOSTIC CENTER

Site potential

The location of the site should be consistent with the particular style and image of the

project. It can also catch the overflow from existing businesses, particularly if located in

an entertainment area (Rose Laude 2018, personal communication, 7 February)

Density

The site should be classified as a low-density development at one-thousand (1, 000)

people per sq. km. since it is a complex with workshop center and photo gallery (Rose

Laude 2018, personal communication, 7 February).

Within Urban Area / Central Business District

The site should be located two-hundred (200) meters from the Central Business District

where it can easily buy the materials or the products needed for the development (Rose

Laude 2018, personal communication, 7 February).

Pedestrian Access and Circulation

The site should also consider safe walking routes enable people within a short distance in

the site, the option to walk or ride bicycles. The site should also consider minor collectors

and local roads with easy access to the site are best for pedestrians and bicycles. Roads

with a significant amount of traffic act as barriers to people that will require traffic

control devices (signs, signals, and crossing guards) and can result in conflicts when

people make poor crossing decisions. The site should be in close proximity to

pedestrians. Footways or footpaths (including any path along the side of a road) should

be available (Rose Laude 2018, personal communication, 7 February).

Interviewer: Student
Interviewee: One of the Actresses of Generation X Year
Interview Setting: Interview conducted at the house of the veteran actress. The interview
was conducted at 5:30 PM on Friday afternoon.
Affiliation with interviewee: The veteran actress is related with me. I have also spoken with
her privately regarding on how are they as an actress in their generation years before and
if they willing to be as an acting teacher to the newest and aspirant actors and actresses.

(Start of Interview)
Interviewer: How is being an actress in your generation years before?
Interviewee: There are a lot of differences of the acting style today. Of course, because of the
limited number of the actors and actresses it is pretty much has professionalism before in our
time, more respectful and inquisitive. It is very different of the young generations today.
Interviewer: What is the difference between the actors and actresses before and the newest actors
and actresses today?
Interviewee: It is more convenient now. There are air conditioned tents today because before
there is no any tents, it is either the actor or actress is just on their car. And there is a phone
today, so when the director says “Pack up”, it is easy for the staff to contact the actor or actress if
they are not on the set. Unlike before in our time there is no phone yet so it is only when we just
encountered anyone on the road. And the scripts today they can just send it to email. And the
STEREOTACTIC RADIATION TREATMENT AND DIAGNOSTIC CENTER

difference also is our script before we used to take care of it, we used to put some numbers on it,
because the actors and actresses today they just throw it anywhere.
Interviewer: Since before in your time in the showbiz industry is there any acting workshop?
Interviewee: No, we do not have yet acting workshop before, unlike today the newest actors and
actresses they really attending acting workshop.
Interviewer: How do you maintaining your good and knowledge in acting?
Interviewee: It is just hobby and passion. And I just watch movies before to learn the right acting
techniques. There is really has a difference style of filming today, because before we only have
one (1) camera and we use it over and over again in all scenes.
Interviewer: Do you usually give any advices to your co-actor and actress who just beginners?
Interviewee: Yes. Especially when I think he/she is open, but when I saw something different on
his/her attitude I would not hesitate approach him/her.
Interviewer: If you were given a chance to be an acting teacher for the newest and aspirants
actors and actresses, will you accept it to teach them or give them advices or lessons on what you
applied techniques before?
Interviewee: Yes, of course. To share to the newest and aspirant actors and actresses the
techniques that I used before. Because it is really different the acting before and today.

Interviewee: One of the Actresses of Generation X Year
Interview Setting: Interview conducted at the house of the veteran actress. The interview
was conducted at 7:30 PM on Friday evening.
Affiliation with interviewee: The veteran actress is a common friend of my grandmother. I
have also spoken with her privately regarding if they willing to be as an acting teacher to
the newest and aspirant actors and actresses.

(Start of Interview)
Interviewer: How is being an actress in your generation years before?
Interviewee: In our showbiz generation before is really much more fun. Because there is a few
actors and actresses before, most of the time we work frequently, then after the taping we
STEREOTACTIC RADIATION TREATMENT AND DIAGNOSTIC CENTER

hangout, like going to the bar or sometimes we just spend the rest of the time in one of our
house.
Interviewer: What is the difference between the actors and actresses before and the newest actors
and actresses today?
Interviewee: There are a lot of differences especially in terms of acting. Because before we
usually do the scene in just one (1) take only, the generation today they usually do in five (5) to
ten (10) take in just one (1) scene, because they are not really focus on what they are doing.
Interviewer: Since before in your time in the showbiz industry is there any acting workshop?
Interviewee: There is no workshop before, we just do our best because we like what we are
doing, and we really love acting.
Interviewer: How do you maintaining your good and knowledge in acting?
Interviewee: You just really have to give your dedication in acting, especially if it is your hobby.
And you have to take care your career especially your image. In this generation, it is a full of
intrigues and there are a lot of issues.
Interviewer: Do you usually give any advices to your co-actor and actress who just beginners?
Interviewee: Yes, I used to give advices to motivate them more in what they are doing. But some
of the new generation that I am working with, they are the one who approaches us to ask some
advices, they ask some help because sometimes in most of the scene they really had a hard time
to do their role, especially when it comes in the scene that he/she actually to do the cry scene.
Interviewer: If you were given a chance to be an acting teacher for the newest and aspirants
actors and actresses, will you accept it to teach them or give them advices or lessons on what you
applied techniques before?
Interviewee: As long as I am alive, I want to give help to the aspirants and new generations
especially in acting.

Affiliation with interviewee: The veteran actor is the husband and son of the two of my
interviewee. I have also spoken with him privately regarding if they willing to be as an
acting teacher to the newest and aspirant actors and actresses.

(Start of Interview)
Interviewer: How is being an actor in your generation years before?
Interviewee: My actor year before is very unforgettable, because I used to show my acting skills
and the things that I want to do. My both parents are known actors, when my mom or my dad has
taping, they allowing me to go with them, and I used to watch and absurd there acting skills.
That is why I also entered showbiz, and I used to apply what my parents acting techniques.
Maybe that is the starting point of my acting career, because I love what I am doing.
Interviewer: What is the difference between the actors and actresses before and the newest actors
and actresses today?
Interviewee: The differences that I have noticed to the actors and actresses today they depending
to the technologies today, because they know that there are technology techniques it limits their
act and they do have doubles. Because in our time when the director says we should slap our co-
actor we will do it real. The young actors and actresses today they usually take more than three
(3) takes to finish the one scene, but in our years there is no digital yet so we used films we
cannot do the take two (2) because the film is very expensive. That is the difference before. We
are all take one (1) actors, because if we take two (2), take three (3), take four (4) that means we
are not good in acting.
Interviewer: Since before in your time in the showbiz industry is there any acting workshop?
Interviewee: In our time there is no acting workshop, we do not practice. Because we do believe
that in acting it is the feeling from the inside.
Interviewer: How do you maintaining your good and knowledge in acting?
Interviewee: In acting there is a certain techniques as an individual actor that I use, I always
show what is the right emotion that will fit in my lines in every project that I am doing, I always
put myself in that situation to make more realistic. And in every project that I have done since
when I was started in showbiz, I never became complacent, so for me it makes me challenge that
STEREOTACTIC RADIATION TREATMENT AND DIAGNOSTIC CENTER

is why I always give all of my best to portrait well whatever character it is. I portrayed different
roles; I used to be villain, vampire, father, leading man, supporting actor, and etc.
Interviewer: Do you usually give any advices to your co-actor and actress who just beginners?
Interviewee: Yes. I do usually give them advices, especially the first time I am working with. I
teach them the techniques how to deliberate their lines. And for me I was enjoying it to share my
knowledge and techniques in acting.
Interviewer: If you were given a chance to be an acting teacher for the newest and aspirants
actors and actresses, will you accept it to teach them or give them advices or lessons on what you
applied techniques before?
Interviewee: Yes, because for me this acting skills is a blessing that is why I want to share it to
the next generation. So when the time that they enhance their acting skills they can also give
back to their next generation.
