Computational Linguistics

Computational linguistics applies computer science to the analysis of written and spoken language. Natural language processing (NLP) is a subfield that develops computational methods to process human language. Speech and language processing (SLP) deals specifically with spoken and written human language. While related, computational linguistics focuses more on the scientific study of language, NLP emphasizes engineering problems, and SLP concentrates on processing spoken language in addition to written text. Both fields utilize linguistics, computer science, and machine learning.

Q. State the differences between Computational linguistics,
Natural language processing (NLP) and Speech and language
processing (SLP).

Computational linguistics (CL)

When computer science is applied to the analysis, synthesis and comprehension of written
and spoken language, it is called computational linguistics. We can use this discipline
in instant machine translation, speech recognition (SR) systems, text-to-speech (TTS)
synthesizers, interactive voice response (IVR) systems, search engines, text editors and
language instruction materials.
Computational linguistics comprises of the ways that how will a machine treat natural
language, or in simpler words, dealing with or creating models for language that can give
access to goals such as precise machine translation of language, or the imitation of artificial
intelligence.

Natural Language Processing (NLP)

A computational understanding of language provides human beings with insight into thinking
and intelligence. Linguistically competent computer systems not only help ease human
interaction with machines and software, but in addition to it they also make the textual and
other resources of the internet easily available in several languages.
Computational linguistics aims at:
 Translating text from one language to another.
 Recovering text that relates to a specific topic.
 Analysing text or spoken language
 Answering questions, including questions with descriptive or discursive answers.
 Summarizing the text.
 Construction of dialogue agents able to perform difficult tasks like making a
purchase, planning a trip or scheduling maintenance.
 Creating chatbots capable of passing the Turing Test.

Speech and Language Processing (SLP)

The fields such as Natural Language Processing, Computational Linguistics, and Speech
Recognition and Synthesis come up with solutions and ways to solve language-related
problem and queries which altogether are named as Speech and Language Processing(SLP).
SLP helps us to know about the computational processes or methods through which spoken
and written human language can be processed as language.
Language processing can be applied in:
 spelling correction
 grammar checking
 information retrieval, and
 machine translation.

Differences ; CL vs. NLP

 Computational linguistics is comparable and also similar to computational
biology or any other computational field. It develops computational approaches to
deal with the scientific queries of linguistics.

 Linguists are interested in ‘what humans are computing and how’. By reviewing their
mathematical properties, and devise efficient and effective algorithms for learning,
production, and comprehension.

 Natural language processing is the art of solving engineering problems that

need to analyse natural language text.

 NLP facilitates people locate an absorb the large extents of information is already
prevailing in the form of text. It is also used to produce better user interfaces so that
humans can better communicate with computers and with other humans.

 Both fields make use of formal training in CS, linguistics, and machine learning.
Research in all three discipline is necessary if you want to enhance and step forward
in both these fields.

 It might help to go to a school with a strong interdisciplinary culture, where many of

the CS faculty and students are actively interested in linguistics for its own sake or
vice-versa.

Conclusion
If you study computational linguistics in a linguistics department, you will typically be a lot
more aware of the linguistics field a lot lesser of the computer sciences.
The students in those departments are technically proficient, since linguistics is fairly a
technical field. But they tend to lack the knowledge of disciplines such as math and CS.
So the computational courses are likely able to give a minimal exposure to formal language
theory, programming, and applied NLP.
